Maybe the HD DVD folks could afford to give their fans some discounts if they hadn't blown their wad cancelling all of Paramount's Blu-ray releases :)

Why whine about Paramount when the ONLY reason you're getting these unbelievable deals is to "counter" HD DVD's biggest release of the year? This is just a wonderful thing for consumers, and even better for neutral HD owners, who are the real winners here, since they get their BD movie fix AND pick up Transformers HD DVD on the same week!! . I love it when these huge companies bend over backwards to win me over. Bravo to the BDA (Sony) for subsidizing this move. And I hope Toshiba follows suit by subsidizing a similar sale or by slashing the price even further on the standalones.

If you jackasses couldn't agree on a format due to your greed, I hope you both like bleeding money so I can get me some stunning HD content for cheap.

Thats something I can agree with but it's as always just happening for the US...

I will say that these sales are a pretty dirty trick by the BR people.
I mean any chance Transformers had to make a real dent is being nullified by all of the sales no matter where you look.
I mean I walked into MovieStop and even they have some BR movies for bogo.

These 'dirty tricks' (I would call them smart moves personally) dont really matter in the long run. Ultimitely, the people that actually matter (studio execs, financial analysts) will understand where these sales are coming from and realize where the bump in sales came from. They arent going to make their decisions based on the size of the pacmans on gaf.

However, internet fanboi warz will be helped if BRD can "win" this week.

Sony has allways had the strategy of "act like you've allready won and you'll win" which works more often than not (but is hilarious when it backfires). This seems to be an extension of that. Sony wants to be able to say they outsold HDDVD for x number of weeks in a row, therefore the format war is over.

Lets put it this way: if either format were selling disks in a volume of any sort of consequence, this sale wouldnt be enough to overcome transformers. Its a testament to the sad state of HDM that a firesale can have this big of an impact. Heck, the fact that a single big release can have this big of an impact itself is a sad sign.

Consumer alert: DO NOT BUY JACK RYAN ON HD-DVD!

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/s...n_Special_Edition_HD_DVD_Not_So_Special_/1070

In what may end up being the biggest packaging blunder yet for a high-def title, Paramount's 'Jack Ryan Collection' HD DVD appears to have shipped to retail in a deluxe "Special Collectors Edition" box set that contains none of its advertised bonus features.

First announced earlier this summer, the four-disc 'Jack Ryan Collection' was originally planned for dual-format release on September 25. Although the studio would eventually scrap the Blu-ray version and push back the street date by nearly a month to October 23, the box set remained among the more highly-anticipated titles of the season.

Now, with the set's official street date only a week away, the HD DVD edition of 'The Jack Ryan Collection' has begun shipping to retail, but fans who were initially delighted to snap up early copies of the set began noticing something strange as they dived into the four-disc set.

As first reported yesterday by fans on several forums (including our own), despite the "Special Collector's Edition" label clearly stamped across the front cover of each disc in the set, and a list of bonus features promoted on the box art (including audio commentaries, featurettes, and more), as yet no one has been able to find the advertised supplementary material on any of the actual discs.

We here at High-Def Digest received our own copy of the final product direct from Paramount on Monday, and after combing through each disc, we too were unable to find a single supplemental feature anywhere on the entire set.

At press time, Paramount had not yet responded to a request for a comment on the apparent packaging snafu, but we'll keep you posted as soon as any official information comes in on the matter. Stay tuned...

Who's whining? I was replying to a guy who was whining about "dirty tricks."

All I know is that I got 8 movies on the cheap this week. :)

As much as I wouldn't want to plagiarise dialogue from the games, my response to this is "...".

Oh, and is it November or December when the BSG Series 0 and 1 HD-DVD boxset comes out? I've seen it listed as TBA for £45 a few days back.

CC was picked pretty clean when I got there, I ended up with Corpse Bride, 28 Days Later, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Ghost Rider.

As usual the schmuck at the register had no idea what was going on and denied it but after they rang up with the sale prices.

Season One hits HD-DVD in December. Razor (the new TV movie) is DVD only, though.

Not sure if I'm late to the party with this, but it looks like British folk are being offered the 5 HD DVD mail-in offer now as well;

http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/news-features/news/Get-5-Free-HD-DVDs-16102007.htm

And you can find the form here;

http://www.xbox.com/NR/rdonlyres/69DBDD1B-6447-437A-890B-FE10BFF2A420/0/Xbox360_UK_lores_FINAL.pdf

Valid for any 360 HD DVD player bought between 1st October to 31st January 08. Same offer as the US one I believe. Pick 5 movies, two from A, two from B and one from C.

NVM!! It is up for Canada too!!!!

Link to Canada deal!

Canada's offer starts from October 15th.

Welcome to the club! I'm gonna get that new Samsung dual player when it hits retail.

I feel like a douche for caving, but both formats have exclusives I want, and I know this "war" is going to go on for at least another year. I like taking advantage of my giant TV, so I guess it's not a total waste of money, especially with how many flicks I buy.

I'm dual-HD.

This past weekend, I picked up 6 Bluray disks at Fry's for $60:

Underworld
Dracula
The Patriot
Hellboy
Donnie Brasco
Curse of the Golden Flower

Next up: Transformers HD-DVD

Come on studios.. keep up the war! Continue to hack and slash (those prices)!

Just got back from Circuit City.

I picked up Transformers and Unforgiven for $27.50 total. So it's technically not BOGO, but buy two, get both half off. Anyways, just wanted to confirm that the sale works for HD DVD also.

I walked into the local HMV in Crawley [England] yesterday. Superman Returns for £28 I-shit-you-not... how awful is that? And they wonder why the medium hasn't taken off yet! Anyway, I've made a vow to buy online now even though it's less convenient. £15 for a movie is my limit in any resolution.

Thanks for the DVD-only heads up on Razor guys. I'd imagine they'd bundle it with series 2 though, considering that's where it's placed continuity wise? I was overjoyed to see series 0 being included with the upcoming box-set.

The one next to me still had it going. Actually had quite a few people lurking in the HD section. I think they all knew about the deal.

I did my part for Team Blu, got Letters from Iwojima and The Departed from CC, Fifth Element from Fry's.

Just bought 2 copies of Transformers for $15 bucks each from CC. One for me, and one for my brother-in-law. Nice! I can't watch it yet though, as my wife actually wanted to buy the movie even more than I did! Lol..

Yeah, I was picking stuff up today. I was about to get Children of Men, but then I saw it was 40 fucking dollars. Then I saw BASIC INSTINCT 2 was the same price. Things are definitely wonky when the MSRP for absolute, obvious shit is that much. I'm an enthusiast, including an enthusiast of trash, but 40 bucks is like enough money for a bottle of decent scotch. Fuck movies!

I am a believer. Just as impressed w/ the audio as I am w/ the video. Man when the autobots crashed landed on earth....how awesome was that scene.

Not sure if you knew this but it was originally announced for BD back in January but got delayed.

It's a Sony flick, so it's just a matter of time basically. Still TBA.

I really want that Robocop Blu-Ray, but have heard that the transfer is pretty lackluster, and to expect a superior version with all the trimmings sometime next year.

dunno if this has been brought up already, but while working today i got a lot of people who seemed to think that if you have an HDTV you can watch HD DVDs....

also, lots of people pissed that transformers isn't on blu-ray ... lol?

HOLY SHIT

and to think I almost missed this.

Just raided CC for:

Transformers
Blades of Glory
Payback: Director's Cut
Goodfellas

For $58 and change.

Tried to do some Blu-ray but I think one of my choices was AVP or some other Fox film they wanted $34 for... so it didn't work.

But, SCORE!

And LOL at the rifled racks. Word's gotten out, because that store was a MESS! :lol
