That's the very definition of daming with faint praise!

There are plenty of reasons for me to be interested in HD-DVD, but that's not one of them.

Bourne, on the other hand, is.

So I have a PS3, but REALLY want to watch Transformers in HD. I'm thinking about buying the HD drive. Am I insane??

I know my wife would kill me if I bring home another box for the shelf. It is really small though. :lol

What is the cheapest you guys have seen the 360 hd drive selling for anywhere?

No offense but Transformers is not worth buying an Hd drive for if you are not planning to already.
I mean go for it and all there are better releases to use as a real reason.

transformers is a very good reason to get a hd drive. It's simply outstanding.

Just had to share this story about how the whole Hi-Def movie and TV wars are a big clusterfuck to the average consumer.

I was in Best Buy tonight behind a 50-something year old woman who was buying Tranformers on HD-DVD and the following conversation ensued.

Me: I've got a PS3 at home with a blu-ray player. I wish I was able to buy it and watch it in hi-def tonight.

Clueless: (looks at me sort of confused) Well, my son has an HDTV in his room so I'm sure he'll enjoy this.

Me: Is he a gamer? Does he have the Xbox 360 add-on or a standalone HD-DVD player.

Clueless: (starts looking away from me uncomfortably) He's got an Xbox 360.

Me: How long has he had the HD-DVD player for it?

Clueless: Well he's just got the game system and the HDTV.

Me: So does he have a special High Definition DVD player to watch that movie? There's a special Hi-def player you have to buy to watch movies like that.

Clueless: No he doesn't have that. You mean this won't work in his Xbox 360?

Me: Not unless he has the HD-DVD add-on drive for it. Are you sure he doesn't have one sitting by his game system? Its a little white drive that looks like a DVD player that's the size of a book. You plug it into the 360 to watch Hi-Def movies.

Clueless: No I dust and vacuum his room every other week and he's got a HDTV and the Xbox 360 and that's all he's got on the shelf.

Me: Then you probably need to get the regular DVD version because if you get home and open that movie, Best Buy won't take it back and you'll be out 30 bucks.

Clueless: But he's got a HDTV.

Me: Yeah but regular DVD players won't read that movie because its a special Hi-Definition movie that can only be read by a Hi-Def DVD player.

Clueless: (looks like she just got knocked out by Confusion in the 5th round) Ok, will you hold my place in line while I get the other one?

Wow, that's a pretty good synopsis of the problem. :(

Don't buy 28 Days later. Just buy the DVD of that one.

There is no reason not to get it on BR especially if you can get it on sale.
The picture while not a huge step up is still a little improved and the sound is much improved.

If there are other movies besides Transformers that you want on HD then no. If that is the only one though then yes you are crazy from spending >$150 for 1 movie.

Agreed. And you'll eventually be able to get Transformers on Blu-ray. Just give it 18 or so months.

Its not like the Matrix where its just a matter of time, its not announced, and at this point Paramount is HDDVD exclusive.

hey, did you hear that Spiderman and Pirates are coming to HDDVD eventually?

This is probably old news but Target is in on the BOGO HDM frenzy, too. What's different at my local Target is that they suddenly expanded the shelf space to like eight columns for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD got another column to make it three total. And before any fanboy comments, the BDA moneyhatted Target long ago. Its just interesting to note their finally carrying more titles for each format.

Days like these...

Have a Blessed Day
I really don't see why some of you feel the need to try and dissuade someone from buying an HD DVD player/add on.
Van has mentioned several times that he plans to go format neutral and not one of us (hd dvd supporters) have tried to talk him out of it.

Who is trying to talk whome out of buying anything? I am missing something, I didn't know that this was about anythign other than wheter or not Transformers itself was worth a sale.

Its more of a problem with the 360s 'choice' option of making the consumer buy every part of the console separate. Now if she was trying to buy it to play in her sons PS3 that would be a good synopsis of the format war problem.

Is it any movie, or is there a list?

It's been a long time since I've gone to Fry's, but their BD section exploded. There were like 4 or more sections while the HDDVD section was on the other side of the aisle partially hidden by a pillar. Best Buy expanded as well.

Which, in itself, is an absurd proposition because:

1. even IF Transformers is the only movie they're currently interested in, there will likely be other HD DVD exclusives they'll like

2. the cost of entry is as low as a high end upconverting dvd player anyway, so no reason to go into penny-pincher advice mode all of a sudden after having blown at least half a G on a Blu Ray player. How many people bought a Ps3/Blu Ray player/HD DVD player/Xbox 360 for one game/movie specifically, knowing that other titles would eventually make it worth the money?

Also, thanks for ignoring my propaganda post specifically tailored to your tastes in movies. :(

I wasn't trying to talking anyone out of anything I just said it was stupid to buy a $150 movie player for 1
average at best
movie.

After watching Transformers for the 2nd time on HD last night I appreciate the movie way more.

My main problem with the movie is right square in the middle of it with Transformers around the house scene and about 20 minutes after that. It isn't charming and cute that they are hiding around the structure it is just frustrating and the scene goes on for far too long.

The second is the sector 7 plotline. Main dude and girl are captured...then they escape, then they get captured again all within 10-15 minutes. It would have been better to just keep them captured and get to the dam faster than have the plot redundancy in there

I'd have prefered it to have had the Transformers show up a little before the 1 hour mark of the film. An editors knife is called for with this movie.

Haven't heard a single thing... might as well go ahead and pick up the DVDs. TV on Blu-ray is off to a pretty slow start, unfortunately.

Just do what I'm doing, record it in HD onto a PVR whenever it hits your HD movie channel of choice.

Any reason to get the Harry Potter boxset when we know there will be an even bigger boxset once all the movies are done?

Good point, but it will take few more years and probably will be even more expensive. Though prices may go down till then.

Because i'm not satisfied with the 720p output on ps3, despite the firmware update. It looks incredibly grainy and fuzzy...almost like an upscaled 480p picture. It's frustrating because I know it's not a case of bad transfers; I've taken a couple of my blu-rays to a home theater store called Tweeter and demo'ed them on a ps3 running on a 1080p set and been blown away. My hd-dvds look fine on the 360 hd-dvd add on @ 720p, so I've been buying those. I've decided to hold off on diving into blu-ray until I buy a 1080p television set (I currently have my eyes on a Bravia).

Hmm... anyone else having this issue with 720p BD playback on the PS3? I thought I had finally decided on a new TV, and now I hear this. :(

this is my biggest complaint. nbc, disney, paramount and fox all own tv stations, sony and wb produce a shitload of hd tv shows and we get next to none.

there are tv series that would force me to go blu, but none of them are out. lost is coming, but its only season 3. put out 1 and 2 and ill walk out of frys with all 3 and a brd player on the same day.

HD DVD players are region free, NOT Blu-ray Disc players.

hddvd had no region coding (thus new line wont release anything on hddvd if they own the distribution rights in a country its still in theaters in).

What a load of shit. Transformers on Blu-ray sure as hell isn't out of the question, given the details of that Paramount/Dreamworks deal.

If HD-DVD somehow pulls ahead in the next year or so...fine, you win and I was wrong.

Fair enough. The way I phrased that was too presumptuous.

It was filmed with 576p cameras, so you it's not really worth buying on BD, other than less discs of course. It'll probably never come out on BD for this reason alone.

Link for reference.

Yeah, what I meant was that people were more or less debatin/discussing Transformers (awesome? Or super-awesome (og buy HD-DVD!)) and it wasn't about anybody trying to talk anyone out of HD-DVD.

Oh, and sorry, I didn't want to rehash all the "I don't want to have two formats around" arguments again. I'm not convinced dual format will survive, hence, any movies I buy on HD-DVD are going to possibly need re-buying, assuming BluRay does eventually win out, which I think will happen.

Oh, and I don;t see pics when I browse at work (by choice) so I didn't see exacltly what you posted until now. :) Dangit, Universal......

Kinda. I'm referring mostly to
his presence in the Decepticon rally in the end, only to have no show time of his fate. They didn't show what happened to him when he joined Bonecrusher on the highway.

If i remember right, he's hidden in car form when Sam's rushing away with the cube in the city. Ironhide bodyslams him to bits and I think he's visible on the carrier (barely) at the end when dumping his corpse

this post is full of correct.

I just got a nice 1080p TV and would like High Def movies, but I have no idea which format to support. I don't really like the idea of buying both HD-DVDs and Bluray discs. I've seen those Transformer HD-DVDs fly off the shelves; is this format war neck and neck again? I thought Bluray had a big margin there for a while, but maybe I'm just out of the loop. When is this shit going to be settled? Will this be the last Christmas for one of the formats?
