Wow what a deal, 360 HD DVD player plus king kong, plus 5 free movies, PLUS season 1 of Heroes for $179!!!!

That is such a good deal, I was browsing CAG forums when I saw this. I am so tempted now, but after listening to this Friday's 1up podcast, I realized i do not want to put up with the 360s noise while watching heroes in HD. I have some money right now, trying to decide if I should get an itouch or something else.

The bulk of the noise is from the DVD drive in the 360 which doesnt spin when watching an HD DVD movie.

Maybe find a store that's demoing the add on?

I prefer standalones myself, but I was pretty pleased with my 360 add-on when it was my primary player. I generally forgot about the noise once the movie started, but I've got a pretty big sound setup and the volume is usually up.

Can you get empty HD-DVD / Blu-Ray style cases in green? I'm looking for a nifty way of keeping my... um... wholly legit wmv DVDs in keeping with my other HD media.

I've only seen replacement cases in red or blue. There are alternate-style HD cases, though.

Finally jumped on the hi-def video format band wagon having bought the 360 add-on now that the 5 free HD-DVD promotion has hit the UK. :D

Good man. Go to your nearest large Tesco and check out their selection of HD-DVDs; most are priced at the £20 mark, but there are a few gems listed for £13 to £15. Other than that Play.com is your friend; as mentioned elsewhere I just picked up Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead on HD-DVD for a little bit over £30.

Yeah i'm definitely planning to hit up my local gigantic Tesco because I noticed they were selling HD-DVDs. I've got Planet Earth and Heroes Season 1 on their way as well. I picked up The Last Samurai from Blockbusters' games section for £13 and was quite entertained.

I'd definitely be tempted by some HD Simon Pegg loving as well on second thought.

I used Axel Music and Movietyme for my online orders.

What about the 360's fans?

Oh does anyone know if there are any Miyazaki's movies on Blu-ray?

It's an absolute joy to be a European blu-ray owner, importing movies, these days - what with the poor US dollar. I get US blu-ray movies for a third of the price I'd pay in stores over here, almost as cheap as dvds are. Just pre-ordered 2001.

I made a comment about it in the thread I made....95 percent of the film looks ghastly! :lol

...but obviously filmed like this on purpose so didn't bother me. Its crazy though because the last five minutes actually look hidef and its sooo jarring in contrast with everything before it (probably shot end with standard film or something)

...anyway, if you considering rebuying it though, don't bother as the extras are exactly the same as the standard def version, as with the overall IQ

i thought it was filmed on the XL1-HDs, i guess not.

Oh wells, i got the DVD version.

Is the bitrate counter on PS3 to be trusted?

I was checking some bitrates of what I think are the most impressive looking titles.
Once I saw Pirates 2 max out at 50Mbps o_O .. Mostly it hovered around 37-40 from what I could tell.
Also Apocalypto went up to 47.5Mbps. Boog and Elliot was around 30-37Mbps. All movies are MPEG4 AVC.

Pirates 2 have some enormus bitrates during the action scenes on the boats. While the slow scense have something like 15mbit.
It is well encoded. Reference material.

For those who don't want to read it really boils down to this:
1) Triple Layer 51Gb HD-DVDs approved.
2) Triple Layer combo discs: [Double Layer HD-DVD + Single Layer DVD or Single Layer HD-DVD + Double Layer DVD] approved.
3) Logo for HD-DVD content on DVD discs approved
4) Stuff relating to cooperation and interoperability with Chinese HD-DVD format approved

So basically we can expect to start seeing HD-DVD51 soon perhaps?

Only if MS got HD-DVD into the 360's very soon this war will become more interesting.

Well there are sub $200 HD-DVD players coming very soon, so I think that will spice things up. Also there are some must-have releases for the Christmas period; Star Trek and Galactica Series 0+1...

Hopefully this will lead to less gimped neutral releases. ie, Planet Earth: should have been two BD not 4.

The maximum video bitrate on Bluray is 40Mbps, so obviously the PS3 bitrate counter is not accurate.

Oh, and I LOL'd at the list of members who voted against this...

Speaking of Fry's expanding, anybody else notice Best Buy expanding their HD sections? Blu Ray has double the shelf space of HD DVD in every BB I've visited in the past week.

Unfortunately the selection of titles isn't much better, they're just facing out titles now instead of spining them and the selection is anemic when you compare it to the DVD shelves which are fit to burst. :p

Pricing still sucks, but I've been enjoying the $14.99 promotions every time they pop up. I just snagged The Fifth Element and Curse of the Golden Flower at that price. Bring down prices plz!

It seems that the video bitrate can increase if the audo does not take up the rest of the 14Mbps. Total limit of BD is 54Mbps.

I think it all depends on your area. It's been expanding in Canada and it's still pretty much 50/50, and some US Best Buys have more stock of individual BD titles compared to HD DVD, so they need more shelves space to accommodate them.

Well it would be interesting to hear about, because up until a few weeks ago they were both relegated to a single display section with almost all of the titles spined. So yeah, 50/50.

So it would be interesting to hear from folks from other areas how their stores are adapting.

You just have to keep your eyes open.
I picked up 6 blu ray movies from Frys last week for 9.99 and picked up another 6 at Circuit city for half price.
Even this week Best buy has a bunch of blu ray movies for 14.99.

You really will not get much cheaper than that.

As far as shelf space Super Walmart here now has three sections of blu ray and one section of hd (was 1/1 not even a month ago), Best Buy is at 4br/2hd (was 2/2), Circuit City is 3br/2hd ( no idea what they used to have since it is not a usual stop of mine)

Unfortunately Ohio has no Fry's stores. :(

Also, last time I attempted to look for Blu-Ray disks in a Wal-Mart I just gave up and left. I could't find shit. Not that I planned on buying anything, I was just curious; but I hate Wal-Mart. If it isn't piles of shit blocking the aisles, it piles of shit with tennis shoes or flip-flops blocking the aisles. >:|

Every best buy i have been to in Austin and Houston had expanded their blu-ray sections by May. In all of them Blu-ray had a measly two racks with a third rack on wheels in the middle of the section by the "new release" table. And until recently hd dvd only had one rack now it has two, and as others mentioned the selection sucks for both formats. Best Buy doesnt even carry the Fifth Element.

As i said ealier i was impressed with Fry's becuase they had a plethora of titles, stuff i didnt even know was on blu-ray.

My local Best Buy's HD DVD and BR sections are the same, 3 racks each.

I'm really torn on if I should upgrade my Toshiba XA1 to a new A30. I played with the A30 and didn't find its boot performance that much better then my XA1, it was better but I'm not sure if it was $400 better.

They've expanded here, too, only both formats continue to have equal shelf space (as it should be). The main HD/BR sections (about five shelves each) are on the left and right sides of the new release section, then there's a second display closer to the front of the store with both on it. Unfortunately, the same titles are in both spots, so there isn't anything new being added, but more of the same. There are still loads of catalog titles no one here carries in store.

You can certainly give Toshiba's customer service a call, Malleymal: 1-800-405-7520.

I spoke with one of their reps earlier in the week (my 5 free have been in limbo for four and a half months). She was extremely friendly and helpful, and had a new shipment expedited.

That Frys Blu-ray section is... damn.

I lived out in SoCal for two years before, and while I didn't get a chance to go often, I loved going to Frys when I did have the chance.
