So does this hurt or help the chance of another PS3 price drop?
I think the PS3's price drops are driven more by it's performance in the console gaming sector than in the HD Movie sector.

So I guess this means the economics for Blu-ray disc replication, etc. are fine, the supposed issues overblown, and likely the interactivity features are well on their way to fruition as well.

I expect this is the case as I'm sure Warner had to consider their decision very carefully.

Damn, it's been an ugly, messy war--er, skirmish. Too bad it had to last this long.

I'd say that I hope the studios and other companies involved will have learned their lesson for the future, but I'm sure that's too much to ask.

Now to finally pick up Planet Earth... in the blue case!

Yes, Frag, but you own a DVD player, yes? Sony had a hand in that, too.

I can't imagine what reason you'd have to boycot a *format* because of who owns a large part of the IP and licensing. Not buying their products I could see, if you had some bad experience. But this is over the top, IMHO.

I don't buy any of them... I have a portable HDD media player for music and a couple of large HDDs for backup. Why would I buy CDs?

A cheap and easy way to transport data/audio? You are telling me you've never bought a CD in your life? :lol

Congrats to Sony and all the Blues!

I guess come May this war will pretty much be over, barring some divine intervention or desperate moneyhatting by Toshiba to keep support alive and kicking.

I'm still glad I've been a neutral supporter, and I don't plan on selling off my red discs or stop buying the exclusives. Obviously going forward all multiformat releases that I buy are going to be Blu-rays.

Most likely, but there has been some debates whether or not the sole reason for PS3 was to be a part of a whole new media format; Blu-ray. If I remember it correct. Might sound a bit far fetched but I think Sony will earn lots of money if Blu-ray really becomes a standard.

Penton-Man said one lady wanted some highlights (WARNER) and a new customer just walked in wanting a change of colour (Universal). Reacting to Amir's meltdown.

After reading Amir's meltdown at HDD earlier today I didn't expect this so soon. I knew it was going to be bad for the guys who bought into HD-DVD. HD-DVD had no redeeming reason to justify Warner exlcusivity apart from monetary pay-offs.

BEWKES DELIVERS.

as nice as it would be for all of this to be over, the hd-dvd camp will probably not fade away quitely.

there will be more sales and moneyhats in the future to extend this conflict.

I wonder if folks were this invested back during the DVD vs. DIVx war?

From my experience, no. They were passionate, but DIVX had less support, and that was over much faster. Similar in tone though, and a lot of the same FUD, believe it or not. I reposted a whole much of stuff from that era in this very thread mid-year, if you want to look.

That was never really a war. DIVx folded soooooo quickly and didn't even have strong retailer support, let alone strong studio support. DIVX was just a bad idea to begin with.

The Premier studios of Hollywood are Blu-ray exclusive now.

Warner. Disney. Fox. Sony.

Paramount will walk out on HD-DVD. Universal is the only possible hold out because they REALLY have a hard-on for Sony hate, which goes back some 30yrs.

They don't hate money, so expect to see lots of hinting at CES of when they will fold. Put a fork in this one, its done.

Wow, didn't know it would happen a few days before CES.

Will they still show up at the HD DVD press conference?
If they did it'd be the biggest dick move ever.

It would also be totally hilarious. Which is probably why it won't happen.

So now Bill Gates can cancel his supposed Xbox Ultimate CES presentation since this announcement makes the product nearly useless?

Oh and of course Warner was attending the HD-DVD CES party so an exclusivity annoucement could only happen in favour of the HD-DVD side:lol

Yeah. I've had cable broadband since something like '00. Before that I listened to radio rather than buy music, and never had any files big enough to need 700Mb of storage.

I seriously doubt I'm the only person who never had a need for 700Mb of portable storage on account of having a fast internet connection, and I also doubt I'm the only person who never felt the need to purchase CD based music when there were so many alternatives available.

I do not think it was ever going to happen.
I will not be shocked to see them plant the seeds of a blu add on though.

Thanks Warner. Now I can start investing in HD movies.

EDIT: Casino Royale, Spiderman Trilolgy, Planet Earth, March of the Penguins, Corpse Bride and TMNT Blu ordered!

I'm going to keep my HD-DVD add-on for the few titles that are not on Blu. Since I just did the buy 3 get 2 BB deal I think I'll try to trade my HD-DVD of Pan's Labyrinth for the Blu version. Will BB give me shit about exchanging for a different format? I did not open it and it is the same price.

I will be honest, I refused to see the TMNT movie in the theater out of spite but it was actually pretty good and looked damned good when I rented it on blu.
(ordered it a few days ago on the amazon bogo too)

Universal sued Sony over Betamax because it allowed people to record TV (thus their IP) for the first time. Sony won a very long battle from the late 70's to the early 80's in the Supreme Court. That ruling is the sole basis for every consumers right to legally record TV, radio, or make backups of any media they own for their personal consumption.

I dunno, internet piracy wasn't an option in the early 90's. And that's IF your moral compass is wonky. Digital distribution for music hasn't taken off until recently.

So yeah... you sound like a real nutter.
