Hollow Knight is incredibly overrated.

Tried 5-6 times to get into this game, but every time ending up disliking the experience. Don't like the way it looks either. Always open and honest about the possibility that it's subjective me, not the game, but with this one I'm struggling to accept that idea...

That's what this pathetic circlejerk really is about.
Nah. Not a single person said they dropped the game because it was too hard. It was for various other reasons. Primarily because the game didn't grab them after giving it a fair shot. Happens all the time.

Not sure what it is about this game that makes people so tribal. Balatro is another popular game that received heaps of praise and people don't get all unga bunga when someone criticizes that.

Not at all. It's incredible. At 90%, "finished" the game but still lots to do. Not sure I'll go much further, but it's incredible, it just takes work.

Edit: reading responses on here, wow, wtf. I'm back to being absolutely sure that NeoGAF posters actually don't like video games. It's one of the best games ever made. I love super Metroid, Metroid prime, symphony of the night, but it's up there.

When I started the game I did not really know what I was diving into. Along the way I met cute critters that were deadly, and fierce critters that were friendly. Hollow Knight showed me loneliness, desolation, frustration, and happiness. All in one playthrough.
It is beautifully crafted, has an excellent risk reward balance, and was made with love. I have not played all the games that were mentioned here, and sure some may be 'better', but I really loved Hollow Knight and can't wait for Silksong.

I do not like it. I find the combat mechanics basic and the presentation consistently bland. There are no qualities I would enjoy seeing in any context. I have had more fun with the nail pick-up in Dead Cells than Hollow Knight and I hate roguelikes.

Dead Cells is RUBBISH compared to Hollow Knight.
Well, frankly I don't like it that much even regardless of any direct comparison.

meh, i never like this game, super overrated, especially, people mostly younger, who never plays metroid and never want to try it, often say this is their best metroidvania without knowing there is metroid or castlevania.
I really don't like HK

before You bash me, I tried the game, and drop it, years ago.

Felt this way when I first played it years ago

Tried it again 2 months ago and holy fuck did it get its hooks in me this time. I havnt had my life stolen by game like that in years.

Game is totally worthy of all its praise and is now easily in my top 10
Same exact experience for me!
I played it after Ori, didn't like the visuals, thought it was too difficult, finished it but only did the bare minimum and ended up missing a ton of stuff.
Started a playthrough this year, I'm currently at 108% completion and it's on my all-time top 5. Absolutely loving it!

It really is, i got bored after a while and never finished it.

Last 2 zelda level of overrating or even worse.

I have to agree. Some people say it's better than Symphony of the Night, which it just isn't. And personally, I had more fun with Dead Cells than with Hollow Knight.

Absolutely hated that shit aswell.
Steady Body 👍

But I'm so used now to move toward the enemy that I can't use that. It's really just about adjusting to it.

I think it plays perfectly. Everything is about learning the core mechanics well. It's extremely tight and well-structured.

The controls are bullshit. After 15 hours no amount of badges changed that.
Twitching about for a pixel perfect platform edge landing was where most of my time went.

I wonder if they're having trouble making Silksong less hardcore to control.

I had a vague memory of a jewel that erase the bounce but wasting a jewel slot to do that or to have the character icon on the map were baffling game design decisions to me.

Also, even if you erase the bounce, the combat system is kinda tailored for it, it's part of the core of the game.

It's just one notch slot, go to Salubra and shop some more. Late game once you want to hold charms that use up 3 or 4 notches then notches becomes a real problem.

however good this game is the fucking artstyle is so piss poor and devoid of any color.

I'v played 2000's newgrounds flashgames that looks ahead of time.

Damn shame too if they hired a proper art director and spritebased gfx and COLOR i would be all over this game.

Never tried it mainly because I just can't stand the art-style and theme.

It's not like we don't have a thousand other Metroidvanias to play anyway.

I don't think it's overrated personally, it's just the rabid fan base that gives it a bad look. It's at least in my top 3 metroidvanias and I would put it as my favorite of those three. Other two being dead cells and valdis story. Also the ost is easily top 10 greatest for me.

If you enjoy 2D Metroidvanias, it ain't. It does so much right for that genre that's been lacking. The scope of the game alone, the atmosphere, challenge, secrets, bosses, level design are all done very well...better than most.

Anyone who doesn't vibe with 2D Metroidvanias won't really like it though.

Metroidvanias were pretty few and far between when that came out but that market has since flooded with smaller more rich experiences. I think you may be right that Silksong is taking so long because they know that Hollow Knight 2 wouldn't be enough to live up to the hype. My theory is also they abandoned Unity after all the drama a few years back with licensing fees.

Pray the sequel is as fun as the first!

You say it's incredibly overrated, but everything you mention seems to be about how people talk about it, not the game itself. You even call it a "great game" and say you love it. So is the issue really Hollow Knight, or just the fact that it got too popular for your taste?

Didn't get on with it, myself. Found it too frustrating.

Didn't get on with Prince of Persia, either (what was with the spike fetish?!), so it's probably just me.

It's a really good game that I personally love. Are some fans a little bit hyperbolic, yes, but I don't think is still considered good even by the OP can be considered to be that overrated. Same goes for Ocarina of Time or Mario Galaxy. Even Expedition 33 to some degree. Very few people think Hollow Knight is a bad game. Now the horizon series is what I would call overrated because half people I talk to don't think its anything special yet its probably top 3 for Sony as franchises go.

Suck at video games?! Lmao

I beat it and didn't even consider it a particularly hard game.

Sounds like I hit a nerve.

Did I insult your favorite game you fuckin weeb lmfao
Did you run that hilarious reply by your gross insect friends before you posted it? And yes you suck at video games because you started a thread to whine about a game. Idk what's more pathetic the whining or your only friends being spiders

Dunno about overrated games, but some people sure underrate the importance of taking their meds.
