Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

It would be hard for someone to say otherwise.

Ehm. The Zelda-gif looks MUCH better and is more pleasing to the eye.

The combat does look more, active,as for engaging?, as in what?, having to hit a glowing target?

Outside of that, and the RPG mechanics, there are a lot of Far Cry / Ass Creed ism's, so you can't blame anyone for drawing a comparison.

I'll look into the game in a bit more depth, because I haven't followed it, and don't know much about it.

Hitting specific areas of the machines disables their ability to do a specific move. If a machine is shooting rockets at you, you can hit the rocket launcher off their back while will force them to employ a new moveset. This is where strategy is involved. It's a lot different than just hitting an enemy until they die which you do I've virtually every other game save Fallout with the VATs system.

Aloy's lip sync and voice acting is quite poor. The couple of NPCs I saw also had poor voice acting and lip sync. One female NPC had good voice acting and lip sync. Main issue would be to fix Aloy's voice acting and lip sync at least.

Combat seems way to ranged for my liking. It just feels like a shooter in disguise. Also, do we have to capture the mount every time? That could get annoying.

The graphics are awesome though, and the NPC faces are very detailed. The locations look great and the environment artists have done an excellent job. The level design seems nice too. I'd love to run around and do quests in this world, but the combat puts me off.

You should consider trying the French version with subs. The VA sounds really good

CDPR needed to develop two mediocre Witcher games in order to achieve the game that is The Witcher 3.
This is GG's first attempt at this genre and I think they nailed most of it down, I really dont get some of the criticism.

The second mediocre Witcher game is the best in the series, imo. So there's that.

I think it is very clear.

1)Games that allow you to build your character in various ways to handle encounters in numerous ways (ranging from stealth to combat to diplomacy etc) are RPGs

2)Games where encounters are always dealt with combat but allow you to build a character who can handle combat in specific ways (ranged, melee, magic, fast and offensive or slow and defensive) are Action RPGs

3)Games where your character can use all their tools and weapons without needing to build your character in a specific way (with a progression tree that makes those tools/weapons more effective) are action games with a progression system.

From what I have seen and read in previews, Horizon fills the third category. Which by itself does not make it a bad game, in fact I think this game will be huge success. However there is clear fatigue for some people when it comes to these types of games and these types of progressions systems since they are simply not as interesting to interact with as in the other two cases.

If you watch the 40 min walthrough and look at the skill trees the game is clearly a combo of 1 and 2.

i definitely see a lot of AC/far cry and the witcher in there. but it looks more interesting. combat in particular look a lot more developed and multi tiered. and while the story may not have the greatest voice work, the idea of the world somehow building technologically and yet at the same time going back to being time where people were hunter/gatherers with dino's is super intriguing to me.

i think this will do really well, especially in a year without far cry or AC.

If there is a perk in the game that lets me go into slo mo when I aim my bow i'm in . I don't know why but I love that sort of thing in games. It what made me enjoy the bow much more in Skyrim.

Just saw some of PS Access' footage and I think I'm sold, even if the story/side quests turn out to be underwhelming it should still be a fun time exploring that gorgeous world, and the combat looks pretty decent.

Witcher 3 had "Far Cry" type side quests too. Secret Treasures, Monster Nests, Witcher Gear, and Bandit Camps. People just completely forgot about all that stuff apparently because it doesn't fit their narrative.

edit: Forgot about Places of Power, Monster Dens and Spoils of War. Man the Witcher 3 was literally Far Cry.

I guess you forgot to read the disclaimer part right?

I dont give a shit about games being like W3 or not. What I am asking is if all Horizon side quest content is that boring generic Far Cry and Witcher 3 (to satisfy you) crap, and whether it features something more compelling side activity as well.

I've seen this asked before but if answered, I missed it. Are there any instances of Ally holding a bow in the traditional vertical posiiin or is it always held horizontal?

Exactly. There's footage out there of guys speccing for stealth and sneak takedowns, there's actually plenty of combat variety in terms of skill-tree and weapons.

People trying their damndest to not call this an RPG, it seems. I don't understand why.

You're in luck! The stealth tree has slow motion when you're sliding and doing certain things, whilst the combat tree has the option to slow down time with a button press mid combat.

For those keep comparing this game to zelda, I think you could know how mainstream feel via UK charts&NPD, they would be on same chart. And official numbers both would come soon as fiscal end at 3/31.

I noticed one thing people might have missed. We now know that "cauldrons" are the dungeons in this game and I noticed that in our inventory we have a notebook with a machine catalogue. If you read the information it says exactly which cauldron built the machine. This is what I'm talking about:

Cauldron RHO (SPOILER New machine type):

Cauldron ZETA:

Cauldron PSI:

Cauldron Sigma is the one we saw in the new gameplay videos:

I guess there will be more? I'm excited. Really hope these are some good dungeons and not just small things like the tombs in Tomb Raider reboot.

Nice finding.

Hope there is a good amount, with a lot of variety between them

What really wow me is the Decima engine. All those lushes of greenery. Imagine a Monster Hunter or even a Elder Scrolls game with it.

We'll get Death Stranding, which to me is a more exciting prospect. :)

What would be compelling side acitvities for you?

tbh i don't think such a game exists or ever has. the only compelling elements of say, the witcher is all narrative. the actually tasks you're given are all equally tedious activities. fetch quests, go here>kill those things etc. the difference is the witcher wrapped it in a semi interesting sub story. but i'd honesty like a game to give me more interesting things to do, not more interesting narrative to passively watch unfold. whether horizon is that, who knows, but i doubt it. we haven't had a single game achieve it so it seems pretty unlikely GG's first open world offering will.

but that's ok too imo. i don't mind going places to kill things.

I just feel like you have blinders on or something man. I mean, both games are stylized (in different ways, sure, but nonetheless). Horizon just looks SO MUCH BETTER. It would be hard for someone to say otherwise. You act like there is no art direction to Horizon.

Bear in mind, I don't think Zelda looks outright bad. And I LOVE the character models and the way they're shaded on Zelda.
Not to incite a fan war, but these Zelda gifs really are more pleasant to look at.

Well considering half the thread is people saying "Eww looks like Far Cry in that respect, not an RPG", I'm sorry that I got you mixed up with all the shit posting.

Problem is that there are way more PS4s than Switches and Wii Us.

I think think Horizon will outsell it shorterm but will lose out long term.

But they really need to stop being compared so much lol

I'd like some activities (not all of them, of course its fun to have the "clear this outpost thing" just to enjoy the combat system) to be enriched with a mini narrative, or to reward you with some lore of the game's world.

I am not asking for something highly complex with a truckload of multiple choices and outcomes.

Just a mini story that could potentially introduce me to some new interesting characters and situations that could evoke some kind of emotional response, be it laughter, fear, suspense. etc

Again, I dont want everything to be tied to some storyline, but it would be fun if there were some mini stories, considering the universe looks to be very interesting with a lot of tribes and the history and all.

I haven't played it, but I have a feeling those things will be in the game.

Game looks unbelievably good. Jesus Christ. And the PlayStation channel footage (only one I watched) was on a regular PS4? Holy shit.

And I didn't realize that we hadn't seen much, if any, night time in the game, until I saw those clips. I got so damn excited just seeing that. The lighting and atmosphere of it all, just wow.

I haven't seen any indicators of it yet, but I hope that there won't be much, if any, padding type of side quests like collecting feathers and shit.

Of course it's subjctive, but read the comment I quoted. He/she basically said that it's impossible to think BotW can look better and as an example he/she used two gifs where I think the BotW-one actually looks better.

Did you think it looked better in this GIF too:

or just the one you quoted, I'm assuming the latter.

.

Something like that is present in the Horizon, basically the particular side activity will reveal the past in form of video or environment change , (in one preview you reveal a building which is a form of a military establishment).
So yes these are also present in the game. and it works particularly well for this setting as there is big gap in past and present.
