Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

aww man, I really like the other designs for Aloy, makes her look more cunning and mischievous...Looks like she could have been from the Jak and Daxter world.

Yeah

As in that the Witcher 3 is a hallmark of good combat? Because it isn't. W3 combat is terrible.

Dragon's Dogma is the undeniable king of open-world WRPG combat. None have topped it.

TW3 combat is pretty boring, but dragons dogma combat is so fun and bad ass. I wish they would make a DD part2.

Yea, it's definitely a good size that leaves you wondering what the rest of the map contains. But I also don't get the feeling that this is a game that's trying to one-up the previous open-world game in map size.

I'm also liking that a variety of environments are available fairly early on in the game. In the previews we've seen quite a bit from snowy stuff to over run cities.

Yeah, the balance in size seems good and the variety is one of the best parts.

Anyone know anything about TVs I'm looking to get this. Has 4K and HDR. Size is no issue for me. Really want to get the most out of this game.

ku series supports HDR, but the display doesn't get that bright, so it won't show you how a display with better brightness can be with HDR. The ku7000 will look a little better than the ku6300 which can be purchased for much cheaper.

I think the ku6300 is a great TV for the price, but if you can save up some more, get the ks8000. The hdr on that set is pretty damn nice, much much better than hdr on the ku series.

One (out of many) thing that's great is that Horizon does do Witcher Sense/Detective Mode, only vastly better because it's done as an augmented reality HUD that preserves the look of the outside world instead of a color gradient filter.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

Its funny but that's one of the things I enjoyed seeing in the previews. I hate when games have a detective mode that you have to use all the time and cause the entire environment to be washed over by some ugly blurry color filter.

Yeah, that's a good point, I remember seeing it in the EZA preview video when he was praising the feature, it seems like they did it with a great style. It's also perfect that it's tied to her little futuristic device.

So good. I love the lasers.

Also, the lens flares accentuating certain lights on these robo dinos like on this one the eyes are such a great touch.

The animation on all of these bots (and Aloy herself) is sooo good.

OK so guys I watched all the previews. Where's the thread on GAF where we can sign up for a free 4K flatscreen, a free PS4 pro, and a complimentary special edition of the game?

Just link me, anyone. No worries. PM if you need to.

Guys?

Wow, the map is much, much bigger than I thought it was going to be.
Please keep in mind that the map we've been seeing in previews is just a fraction of the full thing.

this game looks super snappy to play, i mean Aloy movements look very agile and similar to those of link on the Zelda series

Thinking more on this GIF, I wonder how many invincibility frames Aloy gets on that roll. The lack of a stamina bar means that it might be easily spammable so I hope it's not many or that the timing is very precise. Hard to tell from the previews so far.

Hopefully nothing as bad as what was basically god mode in Shadow of Mordor.

‘Horizon Zero Dawn' builds a refreshingly cohesive open world
After spending a few hours with the game earlier this week, I'm happy to report that Horizon Zero Dawn is not only turning out to be as special as I'd hoped it might be, but that Guerrilla Games has designed one of the most cohesive, coherent and jaw-droppingly attractive open worlds of the current generation.
t's here that I learned about the various types of machines, from the Watchers that patrol the land to the packs of Striders and the Grazers that they protect. I also got my hands on Aloy's bow for the first time, and as a fan of games that feature bows and arrows — from the Zelda series to Tomb Raider — I can say that Horizon Zero Dawn has some of the most satisfying archery of all time.
I completed a few additional side quests and explored a bit more of the (massive) world before my time with the game was up, but my takeaway from a few hours with the game is that nothing feels out of place. From the intuitive crafting system to the three-pronged skill tree to the endlessly satisfying combat against creatures that are always bigger and stronger than Aloy, it's a fantasy world that makes more sense than any grounded, realistic open world I've ever inhabited in a video game.

I think he means what we and the propel who did the previews seen.

They spent 4 or 5 hours just on that section, also remember they skip chapters as well.
That's what I initially thought. Good because that already looks good to me, if that were only a fraction I don't think I'd ever stop playing this game

Is this actually going to be as good as it looks?

It has looked so amazing ever since the first reveal, but I kept my hype in check. Because it just doesn't seem possible that this game will be that good, how could it be?

But previews are overwhelmingly positive, what I've seen looks insane, I've got a Pro on the way, and we're 4 weeks from release. I'm so close to just going into full hype mode.

There are a couple of things I wish the combat designer would have considered when implementing the "rope caster" would have been the ropes "tensile strength". Not all rope, is created equal, requiring you to craft stronger rope to tether down a big machine, it would have to have a certain numeric value or properties to even consider messing with a machine.

The other thing that I would have considered as a combat designer. The Trap i.e. Trip wire should have been designed with voltage levels. If you start out with a 3 volt trip wire the time the machine is down is lets say 3 to 7 seconds depended upon your materials you can create large and small voltage trip wires that would have varying times.

Yeah... No. It's rpg-lite for a reason. The focus is on balancing the narrative with the gameplay and environment not creating excessively/unnecessarily complicated systems for each weapon/armour/material type for the simple purpose of handicapping the player and thereby necessitating grind

We barely saw gameplay videos and trailers for this game and suddenly we got a flood of video previews. I hope we will witness the same for upcoming games like Detroit, GOW etc...

I think there are skill that lengthen the time of trip wire stun so you simply need to unlock the skill if you want longer stun time.

Why would she ever want to use weaker rope? May as well use the best rope on everything just in case. Would be impractical to carry around several different kinds of rope IRL to min/max tying stuff down.

Same points apply to electric trip wires.

4 stage demos and a handful of trailers in 16 months.

"barely"

Compared to other games (cough..MGS games..cough), it is considered minimal. Now let's not talk about other games who just got one teaser or two and others we don't even know if they are still in develoment or not.

You should learn about PR cycles and how to manage them to ensure optimum exposure for the least cost.

I can't disagree. Using such strategy helped the game a lot and convinced many to get hyped for this game.

Its been pretty common for a while -
E3 or conference stage demo;
work-in-progress articles with select sites/magazines; teaser tweets 2-3 months out & influencer activity starting threads with new PR material;
big blow out presentation to all major outlets about a month prior
then a constant flow of update info through until launch to stay front-of-mind.

The main paid-for advertising will start about now as well. I think this'll be big enough to warrant TV buying and most likely some reserved space for post-launch stuffwith (hopefully) lots of '10/10 Best thing since cheese!' quites for things like bus sides & outdoor.

Mass Effect Andromeda really could use an in depth preview event where journalist can play hours of the game to bring up the hype. It feels weird that my excitement for ME:A is so low.

Not really interested in ToZ, but I might download GOW3 despite playing it a lot on my PS3 years ago. Just worried about my storage space, I don't have much left. Most importantly, though, I want to catch that 15 month Plus offer, really good deal.

Hope you didn't have Until Dawn, cause R3 get LBP3 and Until Dawn this month.
The wait for Horizon will be much easier.
