Color Out of Space is one of favorite Nick Cage movies. Another one that is fantastic is Willy Wonderland

Yeh, Cage was on a run for abit there with the awesome horror / action horror flicks. Mandy, Willie's Wonderland and Colour out of Space.

Needs to do some more really off beat horrors like those.

would also add Prisoners of Ghostland and Renfield.
 
HERETIC. (on max) This was exquisite. Can't recommend it enough. It's not about the scares or the horror, which aren't great, but the performances, goddamn. Those two girls and Hugh Grant just KILL IT.

I am rage. This is on amazon. It's low budget revenge horror. More of an action piece. Stupid fun but maybe its the booze :p

Spooling up Arcadian with Nic Cage. High hopes for this one.

Oh, and WATCHER, the one where the folks gotta stand in the room next to the one way glass. Had promise, but fell in the third act a bit. Monsters weren't the best either. Still, ain't horrible and not a bad way to pass the evening.

This film was fantastic. I loved it just for the performances given by three main leads

Heretic was class, Hugh Grant has some serious acting chops, really loving his last few movies, need a couple of good horrors to watch with the daughter (12y.o) who ain't easily scared, no extreme gore or sex/violent types, we last watched the excellent Devil about the 5 people stuck in an elevator and one of them is the devil, any good ghost? We've done all the Paranormals, Insidious type

Watching the french Martys on Plex right now. Pretty intense, as expected.

Arcadian was just ok, IMHO. The creatures looked cool, though I feel like I've seen those fuzzy black alligator jawed things elsewhere. I didn't think the creatures or the worldbuilding was that developed. One family lives in a bunker while others have windows and wide open homes? Sheep roam free? These creatures are about at the level of what Texans would PAY to go hunt and the average american drove to extinction hundreds of years ago with flint spears and arrows, much less firearms :P

Obviously the film wasn't really about the monsters but rather the family, and I did really appreciate that stuff. But if you want to get into the top tier pantheon of monster films (Tremors rules that roost and is lightyears ahead of any competitor) there needs to be more proper worldbuilding. Still, its an interesting film and worth a watch.

Thinking about putting the Anthony Mackie "Altitude" film up next, but I suspect the stuff I want from a monster film will be even worse there, as in general no one seems to give a shit these days about that kind of internal consistency.
 
Martyrs....what THE FUCK am I watching? First and second act, yeah ok, it's really edgy and shit, but this third act jesus christ who green lit this????

I'm actually not a huge fan of 'extreme' horror

Yeah, torture porn not my cup of tea even if it's well done as this one supposedly is. Will probably watch Heretic in a bit heard lots of good things.

Well, Martyrs is an odd companion piece to HERETIC, actually, as they both deal with somewhat similar themes. Just...fuuuuuuck that was a rough watch and I'm normally down for Eli Roth type stuff.
 
I watched a few horror films over the weekend. I watched Humanoids From the Deep and Re-Animator, both for the first time. Humanoids was decent, B-movie-type fun, but Re-Animator was very good.
 
Monkey was a pleasant surprise for me and my friend. Wasn't expecting it to be so funny.

My daughter suggested Popeye's Revenge. Ten minutes or so unwatchable trash.
 
Watching some recent ones on amazon. From Quiver, which maybe some new thriller/horror company. Anyway "Your Killing Me" is too youth/teen priented. Some decent violence but way too much build for the final revenge kills. Can skip it other than background.

Fear the Night has Maggie Q, so I expect it will be significantly more action packed. Basically a bachelorette party gets attacked by meth dealers or somesuch. So far its decent, cute ladies if nothing else. Given Maggie Q's filmography, I suspect this is gonna go straight down the thriller revenge action route. Need a little palate cleanser from Martyrs, let the chicks win for once :P
 
I think this may be the Golden Age of Horror films. Theres SO MUCH good shit out right now.

Not just horror, thriller as well.

This was...interesting. I totally dug the odd 60's retro vibe thing and WOW did they stack that flick with some nice looking ladies! And they reaaalllyy worked to get their witchcraft stuff to have that classic 60's ritualistic feel. Very much appreciated the hippy dippy nature of it. The semi-satirical pontifications of feminism and masculinity were great. But it went on a bit too long, lost it's momentum somewhere in that medieval ren fair scene. Damn her always carefully placed hair as well :P

Off to Strange Darling.

As you can tell, the wife and kids are out of town this week :P

60s and 70s collectively is probably my favorite period of horror, so needless to say I was pleasantly surprised when I put on this flick back in 2016 totally blind. I was blown away by it visually. I am due for a re-watch as I don't remember it well, but I do remember thoroughly enjoying it despite it dragging in parts.

lots of the 60s and especially 70s cast some of the most beautiful women ever and the soundtracks are just rad. then you get the weird ass shit, like Spanish erotic horror, which is just so fucking weird in all the right ways. Jesus Franco is wonderful. his film Vampyros Lesbos has one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen:

same with the 70s Italian horror, stunning women and weird as hell. Suspiria is fantastic if you haven't seen it (anything by Dario Argento is great). they have a remake of it on Amazon which is also very good IMO. completely different tho.

Strange Darling was pretty good. The "out of sequence" stuff was well played. Unfortunately, they felt the need to develop the serial killer with an odd psychological/supernatural twist that isn't developed well, I think it was a way to make the audience sympathize that she isn't completely in control, but its a bit of a weak motivation because she seems to kill others with little reason (old man, old woman, motel clerk) when just taking away the phone would have sufficed. So rather than a deeper understanding of her psychosis, in order to hide that she is the killer we get a third act "reveal" (teased in the first act) to explain her actions but it feels cheap But Willa Fitzgerald is giving Mia Goth a run for her money for extremely long takes while wordlessly processing a series of emotions.
 
Fired up Last Night in Soho. Not bad, another theme of women claiming victimhood from the predations of men. Ana Taylor Joy at her hottest, before the gaunt look overcame her.

I feel like you can do this film in 40 years and have it be about Onlyfans. How women cash in on their sexuality and then turn around and condemn the market they are profiting from. Call it Last Night in Amouranth :P

So that was an interesting one. Nice retro vibe, and damn do I remember scouring seedy video stores for fucked up foreign gore films back in the day! Now I pity the folks that gotta view that stuff for the ratings.

Not sure i totally grok the plot but it was a fun ride.
 
So the family comes back tonight so finished up with a couple more films.

WEREWOLF, with Frank Grillo. Was reasonably high budget (for a low budget film) with cool werewolves and big sets and lots of action (sadly, badly CGI muzzle flashes) but it has a RIDICULOUSLY overcomplicated mythology that really bogs down the film. Lou Diamond Phillips and the still stunning Katrina Law round out the cast but they were so poorly utilized I gotta think this whole thing was a failed tv show pilot they turned into a film, leaving most of it on the cutting room floor. Do NOT pay for this!

HOWL, on amazon. This is a 2015 brit werewolf flick about a train stuck in the woods, attacked by a werewolf. Quite good. Proper cheesy effects, lots of blood, characters mostly act like real humans in the situation. Plus its from 2015 so its set in england that was cast like its in england, not a very specific neighborhood of london. Not quite done with it yet but it's pretty good so far.

This was the last horror film I watched. Early 80s. Pretty decent.

Going to watch something tonight but not sure what. Perhaps an old favourite. There's nothing new out that I fancy watching. In the mood for a really good monster movie.
 
watched Leprechaun last night for St Patricks Day. been a long time since I've seen it. I totally forgot it has Jennifer Aniston in it. the movie is stupid fun. enjoyed it more than I thought, largely due to Jennifer Aniston being in it.

Watching Tremors 4 tonight. it's the western one. can't remember if I've seen it. I'm about 20 minutes in and already enjoying it more than I thought I would as well.

First Tremors is still my favorite in that franchise. I saw the second film last year and enjoyed it. Sad about Fred Ward dying though. I plan on watch the rest of the films
