How about a "Sega Channel" appreciation thread!

Good old Sega Channel! It single-handedly put the Genesis ahead of the SNES for me. I mean has there ever been a better way to try 50+ games a month? The fee was reasonable. The download speed no problem. The game selection, rotated but many games stayed on for months on end!

Along the way it even had some exclusives in the way of Sega Solitaire, Ristar, VF2 (which was crap btw [the Genesis version I mean!]), and so on. If it weren't for the SC I wouldn't have ever know the greatness of the Shining series, Comix Zone, Flicky, and even Streets of Rage!

How in the world did Sega pull this off?
Getting 3rd parties to go along with it?
The downloading itself?
Allowing for pretty much a save file for every games?
And why oh why has it not since been copied even once?

IIRC it was like $15 a month or somewhere along those lines. Back then it wasn't me who was paying for stuff like that so I don't really know for sure. ^_^; But yeah, $15...that's like less then a mag subscription, little more then they're charging for PSO, etc.

Probably Sega and the cable companies didn't make any (or enough) money off of it (given Sega's track record, that wouldn't be surprising). Sega wasn't the first company to do this, btw.

The time that I had the sega channel was easily my personal gaming golden age. Simply the greatest thing ever, not only did I no longer have to go the rental store, but I got to play spectaculr games that I never would have rented (Aerobiz Supersonic).

Sega Channel introduced me to a lot of games I wouldn't have played when I was younger, and for that I definitely appreciate it. On the other hand, I never bought any Genesis games while I had it. Thus, I own very few Genesis games now.

I don't remember too many specific games since I was such a young'un at the time. I do remember lots of joy from all the diffrent games I was able to play on the Sega Channel.

It really is too bad that there isn't anything like the Sega Channel around. It was a terrific value and it was awesome have such a large on-demand game library.
