How are you deciding when to get each next gen console?

two things i keep in mind for a system launch for deciding when to buy it.

1. Are there any games that I really want for it yet?
2. Price. Has it had at least one price drop?

What's the point in getting a console if there aren't any games I want for it yet? So I wait. If I wait long enough a price drop will be around the corner, so even if a game i must have finally arrives I'll wait just that little bit longer for the price drop. And by that time I can have a console with several AAA titles at my disposal, rather than just 2-3

Getting a console at launch is just asking to be ripped off imo. The companies are looking to make their profit margin as quick as possible on the initial launch. I'm patient. I can wait.

Unless there's something I absolutely must have for Rev at launch (ie. Zelda, Metroid) I'll be waiting for the first price drop before i get a Revolution.

For PS3 I'm almost 100% sure that I'll be waiting for the first or second price drop. I'm fairly certain it's going to be expensive at launch, so I'll be waiting till it's at a price that I can swallow.

Time and money will probably prevent me getting an x360, so its launch isn't really an issue for me. Besides I still have HEAPS of games to work through before next-gen rolls around. X360 is simply coming too early imo.

edit: oh yeah, and another thing that'll influence when i buy a new console.

3. Does it's launch coincide at a time when I have a heavy workload at university?

I aint getting a time absorbing console and new games when I need as much time as i can get my hands on for working on assignments and studying for exams. I learnt my lesson with WoW and I aint doing that again.

PS3 and Xbox360 @ launch

Will buy Revolution later down the line, not sold on the controller yet. Need to see the games

PS3 - since i have a friend who's getting one at launch, i'm probably going to wait until second generation units are available. i've been disappointed with the reliability of their launch machines [ps1 and ps2]. also depends on launch titles.

Xbox 360 - depends on what i think of the launch titles when i play them.

Rev - since i can play all the nintendo back catalogue i'll probably get this at launch, or soon after. also depends on what i think of the controller once i've used it and the quality of the launch games.

that's a good point. i'd never considered that.

don't expect all the games to be available right from launch. Hell, don't even expect their online service to be available at launch. I imagine it's all going to take a bit of time for it to become fully implemented. Another reason for waiting i reckon, but really we'll just have to see what happens.

PS3 at launch.

Revolution when it gets a Mario game.

Xbox 360 when the price drops to $200, or when Ninja Gaiden 2 comes out.

or I might just all of them at or around launch.

I am tearing my hair out, but I finally decided to get the consoles when a great rpg(or in Rev's case an SSB game) is released for them.

yeah.. almost same for me.. which means I have to figure out how to get a 360 at launch..

For this generation I bought a DC at launch since I was a Sega fan. The fact that it had plenty of excellent games at launch and was fairly cheap made it an easy choice to make. I didn't, and still don't, regret the purchase.

PS2 at launch was too expensive w/ no good games for my tastes, so I decided to wait for it (the pricing and shortages only re-enforced those feelings). I cracked in 3/2001 because I needed a baseball game badly, since DC had nothing in the regard. I ended up spending $330 at the only place near me that had a system. In retrospect it was a big mistake since I didn't buy more than a couple of games after that for a long while (GTA 3, which I got only a few days after it launched, was my 3rd or 4th PS2 game). I should've waited.

Xbox wasn't really on my radar screen at launch. I knew about it and whatnot, but only had cursory interest in it. The price and games didn't grab me. However, I ended up buying the system in 5/2002, a refurb unit for ~$180 after the official price drop to $199.99, because I wanted World Series Baseball and Morrowind (which came out a couple of weeks after that). It turned out to be a great purchase since I enjoyed those games immensely.

With this coming gen and its even worse pricing, I'm going to force myself to avoid getting either a PS3 or a 360 before they drop down in price. A non retard pack at <= $300 is the maximum I'll be willing to spend. I'm not doing it this way because of money, since I could easily afford to buy both systems at launch, but because it's the smart thing to do given the typical quality of launch software and hardware.

Xbox 360: Going to wait for a couple more price drops. I want to see if the bottlenecks like size really impact whats coming to it. SNK Playmore titles hitting US shores is the biggest appealing point to me. If they're going to make a couple games and then just decide to run to PS3, I want to know.

PS3: As soon as I can afford it because of the Bluray capabilities. I'm not going to pre-order it because I'll have to get a dumbass bundle but I'm sure sometime in 2007. I might also wait a little longer for any post-launch defects. I just got a PS2 and am getting games in order of release. I have Tekken Tag and Ridge Racer V pre-ordered. This week I'm ordering Rayman 2 Revolution. As you can see, I'll be busy with the PS2. PS3 is the only console I'm 100% definite on getting.

Revolution: Depends on how much time I have. PS3 will have a shitload of software coming for it and I learned my lesson with owning multiple consoles; I always have a big ass backlog I can never finish. It all really depends on how lively the PS3 scene is whether or not I will even think about Revolution or if my time and money will go towards the PS3. The same applies for the X360. If PS3 is nice and lively, its going to be my only console.

XB360: Xbox didn't do it for me, so I'm not gonna get the sequle since it seems to be exaclty the same thing all over again

Ps3: All depneds on price and launch software, I'm not gonna fall for a launch like the ps2, where I had to wait a few moinths for anything good.

Rev: Back catalog and price will almost guarantee a launch pickup.

Waiting at least a year or two (or three) after each console's launch, so that I skip the usual early-adopter screwing and take advantage of later hardware revisions, and so I can better evaluate exactly which system I want first based on games available and not hype. Lower software and console costs will be a plus.

As i'm getting older I find I have less and less time to enjoy multiple systems. With the 360 and PS3 being practically similar in power and performance the need for two systems dwindles even further. Being expensive at launch to boot and MS even promising a price drop in a year i'm waiting. That is my plan. I'm waiting till at least next holidays for deals and to have a better picture on where the two stand in term of games I want to play. I'm a collector though so I will probably end up getting all three, I will just be picking up the last two when they are much more cheaper.

PS3 at launch
REV not at launch, but sometime around it
X360 when it's $150-$200 (I don't like online gaming which is half the reason to buy one)

Which ever one has the best TFF wheel support.

...not the only factor but a big one. I will most likely have 360 and ps3 with in the first year of launch.

Exactly the same for me... Although with GAF hype poised to be insane by the time 360 hits, and with a fair amount of disposable income, I may just give into the hype and bite at launch. Wouldn't be the first time (DS, PSP), though traditionally I've waited at least a year before biting (waited till FFX was gonna be released to get PS2 for instance).

I won't get a next gen system until I get my fill of the current gen. I've 152 games across three consoles and I need to play some more. :)

Plus I'm not going to pay more than 175 for a console just like I did this gen or all the others. I will get all three next gen consoles eventually.

Well, non-Nintendo consoles aren't sold "officially" where I live, so I pretty much have to go to import stores to buy them, and most of the time they bump up the price by 30-40%. I think I'll wait until the first price drop to get a PS3. I won't have to deal with mediocre launch games, either. Did the same thing with my PS2, bought one in 2003. Had a pretty huge library of games to choose from. :P I think I made the right decision in waiting.

I'll be buying the Revolution on launch. Same goes for PS3. X360 on the other hand, I will wait. There are still plenty of games left to play and I'm not ready to move on from this generation yet. X360 came too early for me.

Whenever I have the cash available. If I run into some extra cash, I might consider picking up a 360 this year.

I don't think Microsoft could pull out 5 exclusive titles on the 360 that I want; "Five" being the magic number of games a console needs before I buy it next gen (this is up from three this gen).

Playstation 3 is probably my most wanted at this point, mainly due to MGS3, GTA4, DMC3, RE5 and KillZone. I'll only buy a console when it's $199.99 or under, so this is going to have to wait.

Revolution has the best chance at being my only launch console. I'm thinking the price will be $199.99; though if it's $250 and the PS3 is like $400, I'd probably still get it because it will take forever for the PS3 to reach my $199.99 deadline. Of course, I'll have to wait to see what the games are like, but with Mario, Zelda and Metroid, I'm bound to pick it up.

The thing I'm waiting for the most from next-gen is to try out the Revolution controller.
