How can Microsoft still justify $499?

Jeez, GAF might need to make separate sections for Xbox One and Playstation 4 threads...the hate is getting unbearable, as is the grammar.

Except that won't happen because of a camera this time. Microsoft would need a Kinect System Selling game to be able to do this, which would be some AAA game or perhaps just Xbox Fitness to pull it off. Consumers are dumb but not that dumb. Xbox One is not outselling the PS4 this holiday

The same consumers that make these games sell like hotcakes, are the same consumers that will buy an Xbox One over the PS4. Because of their fucking dance game. Wouldn't believe how the general consumer eats these two up. It doesn't need a 'packaged' game--no one gave a damn about Kinect Adventures.

You can watch TV through your Xbox! How couldn't you understand the incredible value of that?

I think $499 + Live Gold sub isn't enough. If I was Steve Ballmer, I'd also charge for an Xbox TV license. Queen Elizabeth does it with the BBC and british people love her.

The problem is you can play Just Dance 2014 "just as well" on a system you probably already own without having to spend $500 on a new system for "the same experience".

Eh, are we actually worried about market saturation with the original Kinect?

OP you've made a great point. Xbone for $350 price change 3 weeks before launch. Press Release: Neogaf users have opened our eyes. Sorry investors, eat a penis and listen to the gamers, they're the ones who matter. Love, M$

I just checked on amazon how much all this stuff would cost If I was getting Xbone at launch.

Xbone : $499
Extra controller : $60
1 year Xbox Live : $60
2 games: $120
play and charge kit : $25
Tax 6%
Total: $809.84

I could build a medium spec PC which could run every game at 1080p and still have cash left over for that price.

But is it better than the "Kinect"-advertised experience they see on TV? Hell, is Sony even advertising the Playstation Eye? I've seen /nothing/ on that product other than the off blog from Sony. You really think consumers are going to buy an unknown product like the PSEye--that's NOT even packaged with the PS4, mind you, over something that's already there, conveniently packed and ready?

If Sony gave a bigger push with the PSEye, then maybe it'd be considered. Hell, there's a reason JD'14 went completely under the rader for it's Wii/Wii-U releases this year; they're hyping up the /real/ seller for Next-Gen.

How can Apple justify $499?

Same answer for both:
Because people will pay it

The last time apple messed up on a product they dropped the price.

Not to mention steam deals.

One could argue that investors are the ones responsible for this mess.

parents will buy the cheaper console obviously
in this shitty economy all the crying in the world from kids wanting a xbone wont mean a damn

Here's the big thing though. Some of these people already have an Xbox 360, so why would they need to buy the Xbox One for $499 immediately when they already have a console with Kinect? The longer it takes for the Xbox One to gain popularity, the harder it will be to draw people in. They better get those AAA Kinect games and Xbox Fitness ready soon.

Also, see what happened with Wii and Wii U over time, the "casuals console".

Price rules over everything. That's why you see people picking phones based on subsided prices. That's why you saw people not giving a fuck that the PS3 had free online multiplayer, BC, and built-in blu-ray player at launch compared to the competition.

Fanboys will argue all they want, but price matters the most and few companies can get away with that (Apple). Microsoft is not the Apple of gaming so they won't.

we are the ones that matter
since you know gamers are the only reason they fucking exist in the first place
investors sure arent the ones buying the games

If people can constantly buy iPads at their price point, then I don't see how's it any different with the Xbox One. Brand names have a tight grip on mainstream consumers.

But that's the kind of thing that will gain a lot of traction on sites like IGN, Gamespot, Kotaku etc. - where a lot of casual gamers end up researching their potential purchases.

Like they did when the Wii wasn't even HD? The masses dont give a shit about the technical side as long as it has the games/fads they want. If Sony can deliver them just as well as Microsoft and at a cheaper price, MS is in deep shit. If MS hits on some cool new game, they'll win. Ditto Nintendo. 99.9 percent of the people that will buy a next gen console aren't sitting on a forum salivating over some meaningless thread about 720p vs 1080p. Price is going to hurt Microsoft if they can't offer something beyond TV+Kinect. The world already bought into Kinect once. Betting on them doing it again is a shitty bet.

Same reason why people would buy a new iPhone over their perfectly functional, 1-model outdated iPhone

"Because it's the Kinect /2/"

Same thing, different product.

People will buy what they're told to buy if they're told enough times. MS will make sure they're told enough.

Exactly. Watch when I tell you; MS's marketing push will be aggravatingly effective come holiday season.

Didn't work out for WiiU.

Because it wasn't the Wii-/2/

Guarantee you if it were called the Wii 2, it would've done MUCH better than it is now. Wii-U makes it sounds like some weird, expensive add-on.

Call it a Wii 2? MONEY. All that money, wasted.

Sequels sell like fucking hotcakes, and Nintendo were fools for not going the obvious route.

exactly and chances are they told people about Kinect being a failure
Microsoft is not the holy grail of gaming as people seem to think they are

Man... what if. 'U' is not a subtitle that communicates well to casuals -- or, anyone? I don't understand it, myself.

You have a brand that everybody knows. Stick a god damn 2 on the next iteration.

Like I said. See Wii and Wii U. That naming made an impact, but how much of an impact are you thinking here?

These are casuals we're talking about here. Xbox One could do better being marketed as the everything console and families might eat that shit up, but so was the PS3 was sort of marketed as an everything console as well (actually the marketing sucked and was confusing in the early days lol).

After working in gaming retail for 9 years (I no longer do, just to clarify), I can easily say with much certainty that casual gamers do not research their potential purchases. They walk into a store because they want a new game (any new game) or because they heard (insert giant franchise here) has a new game out.

I'm not saying negative press won't affect Xbox One, but 720 vs 1080 will go right past the average consumer without causing any major issue. Huge differences in texture detail/polygon count, probably. Resolution differences? Nope.

They need to make of XBL the best gaming service. Dedicated services is a good begining but they need to go further, being more like steam with better deals, flash deal, small prices, make consumers value more having access to games than playing the game itself. PC gaming usually have a higher cost of admision than consoles but the deal is in games being cheaper, so there is you answer MS, your prime asset is not that PC with a Microsoft case, its Xbox Live.
Never be left behind again, if Sony gives something you copy and make it better, it is going to cost you but it cost a lot to Sony to not be oeft behind last gen too.

Back to apple they usually increase the power of their products pretty nicely while keeping the price the same with each iteration. Retina display, smaller bodies, better os. It's been 8 years. I don't get how anyone would be ok with something that can't at minimum run full hd. That would be like apple charging full cost for its non retina models. Again add LIVE over 4-10 years and they've already made enough. Instead of getting a subsidy for a subscription we get nothing. Bleeding edge consoles and no subscriptions did fine before Xbox. The nickel and diming is just a bit much at this point. There was a time when these companies bent over backwards to earn our dollar.
