How is XBOX Live with DSL

Obviously it will be better with broadband, but I only have DSL. I plan on playing Ultramix 2, Battlefront, and Halo2 on it. So should go ahead and get it, or just say fuck it because the quality will be too shitty?

I'm using DSL for XBOX Live and PS2 Online. No problems here , but just don't expect to host and 16 player Halo 2 matches.

I use basic sbc/yahoo dsl, and I've never had any problems. Halo runs perfectly. I've played Madden with a lot of people on this board, and never had problems. It's worth it.

Like Defensor said, I'd leave the hosting of games to others.

Someone doesn't know the definition of Broadband methinks. Stop listening to those Comcast commercials. ;)

You'll be fine with your DSL connection.

I do, but my friend had XBOX DSL and had some serious lag and switched to broadband and it worked fine.

Edit:: Ok I am such a newb, I meant cable not broadband. It's one of those days.

DSL is broadband. There are many levels of DSL you can get with various speeds, so I think you need to be a bit more specific. Most consumer level DSL runs at 500-768Kbps which is directly comparable to Cable. I've had both situations, one where my Cable was faster and one where my DSL was faster.

My download and upload speeds are both lower than the locally available (and similarily priced) cable modem service often resulting in online LAG :(

also...Bittorrent is rediculously slow for me...i think 12K/sec is the fastest I ever DLed with it (getting the WoW open beta installer and patch sucked :b)

I have SBC DSL in Chicago and online with X-Box is good for me... sometimes if I play around 5PM-8PM I get a little lag...

Normally, I have no problems... I think it is laggy at peak times during the day...

I don't play until after 8PM, so it runs OK when I need it... Who knows...

I have the slowest DSL available and have never had any Halo 2 lag issues, even in 16 player matches. The only time I've lagged is when everyone else was laggy too. Just one of those games. My max download speed is like 28K.

Anyway even with shitty DSL you'll be fine. Seriously.

I emailed my host to see what they thinks and asked for the kbs, so I guess I will find out from the official source.

Ok but that's you lots of people game online with DSL with no problem what so ever.. who's your provider and what's the speed they advertise you should be getting at your level?

Like most people have said, DSL is broadband. You have to be more specific on what type of DSL you're getting. Your DSL could vastly differ from your friends DSL even if its the same ISP. Your friend could be at the edge of the distance in which a good connection can be established and for all we know, you could be right next to the box. I've got a great DSL connection with 3 mbit down and 500 kbit up. I do miss the 800 kbit up I had at my other place though. I've had torrents downloading at over 300k a second. I highly recommend you check to see if DSL Extreme is in your area. They are a great ISP and offer up to 6 mbit connections for a low price.

I know DSL is broadband. I was being newbish and saying broadband instead of cable. The host is adelphia www.adelphia.com/high_speed_internet. I looked but couldn't find anything about the kbs.

Wow this is an incredibly marketing driven, information-lite website adelphia has.. I've never had trouble finding pricing, speed lists for a company's DSL service before.

What's your zip?

More than likely you're getting either 1.5Mbps or 3, probably 1.5. I online gamed on 1.5 with Verizon with little to no problem.

Trust me dude, you'll be fine. I have the slowest DSL available and had these EXACT same concerns (I even made a topic about it here), and it was fine.

DSL comes in different flavors. Go to DSLreports and do the speed test if you're unsure about what speed you're connecting at.

As far as I know Adelphia offers cable modem service only. They are a "cable" tv company. I get 3000Kb down and 256Kb up from them and have no problems with XBL. They have a higher tier service that is 4000 down and 512 up, but I have no need for it.

heh...i use bellsouth.net's ~$35 service...whatever its called

just checked and it's called BellSouth FastAccess DSL Ultra....the speed it measured in kilo and mega -- ... bits

damn

Dont have it yet. The stuff is to arrive in the mail within the next 3 or 4 days.

Adelphia is cable... so you're probably getting 3mbps. More than enough.

That's odd, because when I was talking to them on the phone, I asked is it DSL or Cable, and the guy is like DSL.

Heh, I have talked to their tech support before. The guy couldn't understand why I would be using a network switch between my modem and Airport router (which has only 1 ethernet port). I wouldn't be surprised if they told you that it was DSL.

Well one last thing. I have never used XBOX Live, so I am not to familiar with the way it works. Do you have to pay in addition to your subscription to play the games. Such as if I was to play Halo2 would I have to pay like $15?

Playing the games costs nothing extra. The only thing that costs extra is some downloadable content I believe.

The key to gaming is upload, upload, upload. I can't stress that enough. For me, my DSL uploads at 796kbps but only downloads at 1.5 mbps. If I went to cable I would get 3.0mbps download but only 256kbps upload.

In this instance DSL >>> Cable for gaming.

BTW, 128kbps is the minimum upload speed required for XBL. I have played on XBL with that speed before and it was not a very good experience. Frequent lags and disconnects.

Just went to XBOX Live website and looked at high-speed internet providers that are compatable and the Adelphia logo was there so I am safe.

I didn't realize DSL had such great upload speeds. Cable has always been horrid for uploading, unless you had Optimum Online, which has 1mb upload.

That is a marketing gimmick plain and simple. MS has done that with routers too cobranding them as XBL-compatible... whatever.

I've played well while running Bittorrent on my machine. If I can do that, you can play well on a slowish DSL connection.

In all honesty it should be fine.

This man speaks the truth. I've also got SBC Yahoo DSL and theres been no problems with Xbox Live gaming. My connection is 3MB D/L,512 U/L.

I've hosted games and for the mos part have never really run into any real lag. Be weary of Battlefront though. That game was coded sorta of weird. Youre going to have to set your DSL upload limites just right before you jump in and play, otherwise you'll lag the game. Has there been a patch to fix this issue? Oh and stay the hell away from Unreal2 the Awakening over Xbox Live, its the worst coded Xbox Live game I've ever seen, you can literally count the frames when playing. Its lagtastic.

Cable = Higher Speeds / Speed goes up and down more depending on area

DSL = Not as high of an upload as cable / Speed stays at the same level more consitantly

T1/T3 = Jesus being owned.

Doesn't the broadband definition in USA also have a minimum speed? For example here broadband means atleast 2mbit DL and I forgot about the minimum spec for upload.

Then youre seriously missing something on your settings. You might want to check them out once again. I could see your speed taking nasty hits if theres tons of leechers with only a few seeders for the torrent. Have you any port forwarding though? Do you have your firewall configured properly? It could be blocking others from connecting and sharing with your PC. And do all your torrents run at low speeds? Even if there are a great numbers of seeds available?

Its always frustrating to hit a wall while downloading torrents. Hopefully you can solve your problem though. I usually get around 25-150 KBPS(usually 50 average per torrent)..ofcourse it all varies though, depending on the number of seeders, leechers, and if they have their firewalls configured properly so as not to block me. Same goes with me,if I don't open the ports the connections will be blocked.

I have SBC Yahoo DSL - 2000 down (estimate); 450 Upspeed. Needless to say, I can do a 16 player game, no prob. 36.00 a month - San Diego.

So, yes, DSL is great for LIVE.

Angelus, I get those speeds when I am connected through a router or not, using windows firewall or not, windows 98 or windows xp. I'm starting to feel it might actually be the Phone>CAT-5 converter bellsouth assigned me

Damn I'm so out of date with whats what anymore. Are the cat 5 conveters those little plugs you put onto each line for every phone, modem, and satelite system in your household? I guess it could be something like that, some nasty interference would degrade a signal I suppose.

Have you tried using a different firewall? I'm not sure if what I've heard is true so take this at face vaule but some have said Windows Firewalls are plain evil to use, with regards to file sharing. I use to use Zone Alarm but it was always hit and miss in my experience,I've had to reinstall it a few times because it tends to screw with my Bittorent speeds every so often. MCafee's a good one though, maybe you should try a few out? I wish I could help you further, just keep plugging away at what it could be and eventually you'll nail the source of the problem.

No...those little connectors you refer to split a normal phone jack into a DSL and a seperate phone line. What i'm refering to is a Westell Wirespeed A90-210030-04 DSL modem.

My speeds are reduced with or without the firewall enabled, and were just as bad before WinXP SP2 was released when I never used the Windows Firewall.
