For me 40 hours is ideal. More than that starts feeling like a bother. Although there are some that manage to keep things fresh.
FFIX ie. Had great pacing and was a joy to play start to finish.
Xenoblade series although I enjoy them most of the time one spends running through huge environments.

Voted 40 hours because that's usually the amount of time developers (on average) can keep a game fresh and interesting. A lot of RPG games I've played fall off around the 30 hour mark in terms of keeping things interesting, and I've played a whole lot of games that seem to want to tack on an extra 10+ hours after that point and go from being a 9/10 to a 6/10 experience for me because of it.

Meanwhile I've played over 300 hours of Final Fantasy XIV and still have so much I want to do and get excited about the things I haven't done in that game. I also had over 200 hours on my Xenoblade Chronicles 2 save file and have been contemplating a New Game+ run through the story again.

So really it just depends, but typically if I'm playing an RPG and don't get 30-40 hours out of the experience I feel like it's too short.

I don't think I have a preference. I will usually give up on an RPG after the first 5-10 hours if it doesn't hold me. I invested too many countless hours in my younger years into games that "take awhile to get good" (that's usually the excuse).

But when I'm hooked on the RPG, I mine it for all it is worth. Spent over 150 hours in Octopath Traveller, for instance, even though I think the main campaign is probably only a 50-60 hour endeavor.

Chrono Trigger only took me 22 hours to complete (story and all sidequests). All killer no filler, that's how these games should be. Don't waste precious time.

What 60+ hour Main Story RPGs are there even actually? I can only think of Persona and Trails games. Most RPGs Main Story is done far below 60 hours.

20 to 40 hours with good mechanics/gameplay and story is good for me. Not too long, and this means I will likely play through it again as I have with many of my favorites. The exception to the rule is a couple of the Dragon Quest games where I can end up spending way more time than that playing through them (100+ hours), and going deep on the character building (DQVII's jobs) and still not feel fatigued or like the game is dragging on.

Time isn't the most important factor for me. I care about the quality of the experience, and I really love it when a title leaves me feeling like I want more - regardless of length.
Exactly this, I mostly care about how satisfying the overall experience is rather than how long it is.

I want long RPGs.

Main story? Around 40/50 hours long.

What RPGs need more of than lenght though is quality side content. Sidequest as good or better than the main quest, regardless of how long or short they are. Engaging mini-games and customization. Not just the typical extra content cannon fooder to inflate the damned thing.

Depends on how much I enjoy it. I can easily put over 100 in for Pokemon or Xenoblade. I'm at the final boss for Tokyo Mirage Sessions and should beat it tonight with just over 50 hours of playtime, and I think that's a pretty good spot for that one.
