How many "Original" games do you own?

Musashi Wins!

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
Just curious about the percentage of your collection. Being a well-informed, ravenous gamer, how many of your game purchases are for truly original content? I'm certainly not implying that original games are better, etc. I'm just curious about how well informed gamers tend to make their buying decisions in todays market. If you'd like to say something else about the topic by all means hold forth. I'll post my own accurate percentage when I get home. No need to list every game, I'm well aware that the overall market percentage is probably pretty low.

As to defining an "Original" game, I'm going to steal from a feature the Curmodgeon Gamer did on GBA games http://curmudgeongamer.com/article.php?story=20030813144801633 and limit the definition to this:

- Don't include licensed games.
- Don't include sequels or games related or part of a "franchise".
- Don't include remakes.
- Don't include "retrofits" ie. the cited source's word for games that are appearing for the first time on another system than they are typically associated with.

Thanks!

a good portion of my PS1 & PS2 library is orginal, estimate maybe around 30%, its much lower on my Nintendo systems cause they keep using their mascots to sell the games

Viewtiful Joe, Beyond Good and Evil, PN03, Animal Crossing count?, Pikmin, Alien Homind (since flash game was kinda like a trial run), Eternal Darkness, Baten Kaitos. I'd say 20-25% of my games could be called "original", and maybe a bit more if you include the sequels to pikmin and VJ.

so wait, are you saying that if an original game, like Viewtiful Joe spawns a sequel, the game is no longer "original", or that just the sequal is not? because if so, that severely limits the number of original games.

I trade in all my games, but I have owned:

-Pikmin (before it was a series)
-Super Monkey Ball (before it was a series)
-Animal Crossing
-Ikaruga
-Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
-Halo
-Gladius
-Metal Arms
-Fable
-GunValkyrie
-Beyond Good and Evil
-Viewtiful Joe
-Blinx
-Bloodwake

Hell. I've got close to 900 games in my collection.

I've no simple way of filtering out all but the originals.

Let's see...

On PS2, I have 25 original titles out of somewhere over 100.
On XBOX, I have 17 original titles out of 44.
On GC, I have 6 original titles out of 24.

In the case of PS2, it's odd, but a lot of the more seemingly original or unique titles are either sequels or have had a sequel in the "series" released down the line. I mean, calling "Brute Force" (bleh) original while not applying that to Katamari Damashii, Frequency, or Klonoa 2 just seems...odd.

Sticking to the 32-bit era and onward:

GBA = 21%
GC = 25%
PS1 = 42%
PS2 = 42%
XBOX = 40%
DC = 67%
N64 = 52%
Saturn = 54%

*Including games that spawned a series, as I'd consider them to be "original" at the time of release.

I should have clarified that part...but yes, a game that spawns sequels, but is an original IP still counts, ie. Pikmin. Whereas a game that depends on other franchises for it's product, ie. Super Smash, does not.

And dark10x, I agree, many of the most interesting games are part of an existing IP. But it's still worth figuring out to me how many games are marketed that way. I'm trying to stay away from value judgements about said games for this experiment.

Unfortunately, I don't keep most of my own games (shy away from collecting) so I don't know what my lifetime amounts would be. I know that a lot of you are serious collectors so that would probably lead to both a larger swathe of titles, and also a lot of titles in the same "series" of games.

As of today for me.....19/72 = 26%

Between the PS2 and GCN:

Katamari Damacy
Xenosaga Ep. 1
Baten Kaitos
Beyond Good & Evil
Eternal Darkness
Ikaruga (does this count? it's the first printing in the states)
Metal Arms
Pikmin
Viewtiful Joe

PS2 - 2/3 = 66%
GCN - 7/23 = 30%
Between the two - 9/26 = 35%

Games from this generation. Let's see...

GC
Animal Crossing
Beach Spikers
Dead To Rights
Eternal Darkness
Freedom Fighters
Gladius
Metal Arms
Pikmin
P.N. 03
Sega Soccer Slam
Viewtiful Joe

11/46 = 24%

PS2
Frequency

1/3 = 33%

GBA
Boktai
Golden Sun

2/3 = 66%

TOTAL
15/52 = 29%

A rough estimate based on US releases until now of their libraries as a whole:

N64=16%
GC=16%

Isn't that often an argument?

Xbox=20%

Again, I can't stress often enough how awful the original properties are. But I wonder how many games might be published as original IP's if there wasn't such a push toward brand.

That's all I can think of without having to look for them...

Nintendo Entertainment System
Contra (first)
Dragon Warrior (first)
Duck Hunt
Ninja Gaiden (first)
Super Mario Bros. (first)

Super N.E.S.
Sim City (first)

Nintendo 64
Perfect Dark

GameCube
Animal Crossing
Crazy Taxi (first)
Eternal Darkness
P.N.03
Pikmin (first)

PlayStation 2
ICO
Katamary Damacy (first)
Rez

Wow, those are some low percentages people are listing. I would have expected the GAF collections to be a bit more eclectic.

I would guess it's over 70% for me.

If the system numbers Musashi posted are accurate, it'd be hard to have even a 50% originality rating. The fact that sequels are dismissed really hurts. No Amplitude, no Viewtiful Joe 2, no Boktai 2, no Pikmin 2, no Blinx 2... er, wait. No one owns Blinx 2 anyway.

Gamecube
- Pikmin
- Super Monkey Ball
- Ikaruga
- Beach Spikers
- Viewtiful Joe
- Beyond Good and Evil
6/21

I'm not going through my old game collections, but I bet the ratio is much higher for them.

GameCube:
-Beyond Good & Evil
-Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg
-Super Monkey Ball
-Viewtiful Joe
-(4/~17)

GBA:
-Golden Sun
-Kurukuru Kururin
-Legend of Stafy
-Napoleon
-(4/32)

N64:
-Banjo-Kazooie
-Blast Corps
-Jet Force Gemini
-Perfect Dark
-(4/30)

It looks pretty weak by the numbers, but my collections have quite a bit of variety. I've sampled from all kinds of series and licenses, so the majority of titles are at least original to my collection. Still, a lot of my games are sequels or reliant on licenses or franchises of some form to get out the door.

Depends. Gamecube is light on original titles, while the Xbox library was pretty much 100% original titles for a while.

Just for this gen:

ICO
Manhunt
Read Dead Revolver
Killzone

"Firsts":

Devil May Cry
Kingdom Hearts
Ratchet and Clank

Well, crap.

I think the quality of execution is very high this generation, which off-sets the lack of originality.

Yea, that's probably true. I don't know how much it matters, I'm still thinking about it. There's something depressing about it all the same.

I should have clarified that part...but yes, a game that spawns sequels, but is an original IP still counts, ie. Pikmin. Whereas a game that depends on other franchises for it's product, ie. Super Smash, does not.

OK, I guess my list would increase greatly then...

Selective memory, unfortunately. Here's a list of games that released no later than one week after the XBOX launch ("original" titles are italicized):

MS
Halo
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee
NFL Fever 2002
Project Gotham Racing
Fuzion Frenzy

EA
Madden NFL 2002
NASCAR Thunder 2002
Cel Damage

Crave
Kabuki Warriors

Infogrames
NASCAR Heat 2002
TransWorld Surf
Test Drive Off-Road Wide Open

Midway
Arctic Thunder
NHL Hitz 2002

Eidos
Mad Dash Racing

TDK
Shrek

Rockstar
4x4 EVO 2

THQ
Dark Summit

Konami
Air Force Delta Storm

Tecmo
Dead or Alive 3

Activision
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2x

6/21 = 29%

I'm not sure that Project Gotham and Kabuki are really original titles per the definition, are they? The Xbox being a new console brand has more original IP's, but a lot of them are god awful. Also, it loses some to being the second location for some PC retrofits. It does seem to be the development platform for some titles that end up on PC later as well though.

I was surprised on my rough estimate that the N64 was about equal to the GC. There seems to be an impression that the GC is really lacking in comparison in this dept. However, the Nintendo consoles are typically lower as they are by and large delivery systems for sequels to house franchises. I think the GBA has a notoriously bad percentage, but no big surprise there.

You are probably right, PGR shouldn't be included. What disqualifies Kabuki Warriors? Admittedly, I don't know much of anything about it...

PGR, as the sequel to MSR, certainly doesn't count.

Personally I couldn't care less how many 'original' games I own (and any definition of 'original' where Halo is original and DK:JB isn't is fundamentally flawed anyway). I only really give a toss about how many 'good' games I own. Where goodness is defined purely by how much fun I get out of playing them.

My US GBA list...

-Advance Wars (Nintendo)
-Boktai: The Sun Is in Your Hand (Konami)
-Car Battler Joe! (Natsume)
-CIMA: The Enemy (Natsume)
-CT Special Forces (HIP Games)
-Denki Blocks (Majesco)
-Fire Emblem (Nintendo)
-Golden Sun (Nintendo)
-Ninja Five-O (Konami)
-Racing Gears Advance (Orbital Media)

...and soon...

-Pirate Battle (Orbital Media)
-Riviera: The Promised Land (Atlus)
-Scurge: Hive (Orbital Media)

...I'd have also bought Kurukuru Kururin, Magical Vacation and Legend of Starfi had they made it over. :(

Pirate Battle! Excellent!

Fire Emblem and Advance Wars are marginal...but their new to the US so! It will be interesting to see how the DS branches off from this. I've heard you mention before that development kits are very cheap. I kind of thought that the upside of the platforms announcement was that it would encourage more experimental work (and of course it still may) but so far that doesn't seem to be the case.

This gen only :

Xbox (62 games -> 17 original = 27%)

APEX (Racing Evoluzione)
Beyond Good & Evil
Deathrow
Enclave
Fatal Frame (Project Zero)
Grabbed by the Ghoulies
Gun Metal
HALO
Kung Fu Chaos
Metal Arms
Otogi
Phantom Crash
Psi-Ops
Quantum Redshift
Rallisport Challenge
Sega Soccer Slam
Top Spin

GameCube (22 games -> 3 original = 13,5%)

Beach Spikers
Eternal Darkness
Viewtiful Joe

PSTwo (16 games -> 5 original = 31%)

Devil May Cry
Disgaea
Frequency
ICO
Shadow Hearts

EDIT : GBA (16 games -> 0 original... unless you count Fire Emblem, Chu Chu Rocket and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga.. :))

Well, I'd consider Advance Wars & Fire Emblem "new" in the same context as Halo or Pikmin in America. It's a slippery subject with "import franchises" but these really are new games to western consumers. Same for Animal Crossing or Custom Robo on GameCube.

DS could go either way. There seems to be quite a bit of new stuff coming from Japan, but the west is sort of lagging. Kinda surprising though given that dev kits are super cheap (cheaper than GBA in fact) and software margins are way better than GBA carts combined with the unique interface. I'd expect better of western developers but maybe the fault should really lie with publishers. I dunno, anyway here's a list of "new" DS games for western audiences...

-Another Code (Nintendo)
-Caduceus: Surgical Operation (Atlus)
-Egg Monster Hero (Square Enix)
-Electro Plankton (Nintendo)
-Feel the Magic: XY-XX (Sega)
-Gyakuten Saiban (Capcom)
-Jam with the Band (Nintendo)
-Lost in Blue (Konami)
-Meteos (Bandai)
-Nanostray (Majesco)
-Nintendogs (Nintendo)
-Ping Pals (THQ)
-Polarium (Nintendo)
-Sprung (UbiSoft)
-Zoo Keeper (Ignition)

...some of those are iffy though as they're spiritual sequels (Nanostray/Iridion, Lost in Blue/Survival Kids, Zoo Keeper/Bejeweled) or old IPs in Japan (Gyakuten Saiban, Egg Monster Heroes).
