I heard from a dutch guy LOL is an abbreviation for

“Leef onder lood”

live with lead

when those horrible dutch traders (yes slave trading.) They used to wrap lead weights around slaves legs and kick them from the boats if they didn’t behave. When exporting them to other countries.

the would yell LOL Just before kicking them from the ship.

LOL truly is a sick word invented by the dutch
Only those kind of people could invent this.

I know I write it way too often, but I'm not sure what the alternative is as I'm a fairly jolly fellow online, and writing out laughter as an onomatopoeia always conveys something extra that squidges the mirth.

Out loud, almost never, unless I'm being ironic.

To those asking, "Why not just laugh?" I have heard people laugh uproariously and then punctuate it with an "L.O.L!" I'm not sure if that helps or just makes it weirder. *shrug*

Never. I don't even laugh out loud for real.

If I find something funny, I just do this short exhale of air through my nose.

I don't know about other countries but in mine it was common up until a few years ago.
You'd hear something along the lines of: "Marico, lol. Que de pinga."
So... yeah.

Maybe it's because it sounds a lot smoother in Spanish than in English. I don't know.
When rage comics were all the rage (pun supremely intended), you couldn't stop hearing people say it.

I use it as "lulz" and mainly just being a dick when talking with friends / family "I did it for the lulz"

I do use Soulsbourne a lot as it pretty much is its own genre, and possibly my favorite

my kids phonically says "lowl'

Its not as bad as my most hated words of 2020-2021:

"literally"

"yeah.." instead of "yes" is far behind "literally"

If you say this word everyday I see you.
then you will not see me everyday.

First time I went to college in the 90's I spent a lot of time on mIRC.

Ended up talking to some girl in a channel (probably music related) and we'd chat all the time.

She'd constantly say 'LOL', was the first time I'd come across it. I thought it meant 'Lots of Love'.

Thought she was being very forward but she was fun to chat to. Only found out later what it meant.

i have to admit that the very few times i have said it it has sounded out as 'lol' like the first syllable of lollipop

A good amount, since I've talked about those L.O.L. Dolls for presents and stuff.

Saying "EL OH EL" in response to something funny? Never, that's hella cringe.

I say it when I'm obviously being sarcastic or say something utterly stupid like "Look, that man is disabled LOL" or "Oh no, the restaurant is closed. Oh well we could do Meth instead LOL".
