How will Guild Wars be compared to WoW?

I'm already playing WoW so it's unlikely that I'll quit, but my cousin is torn between the two. The lack of a fee for GW is pulling him towards that route.

They aren't even the same kind of game. GW is more like Diablo with MMO touch. While WoW is straight out MMORPG.

I'm currently playing Guild Wars during the public beta weekend... it's a blast so far. I love the leveling and death pentalty systems. Lower level characters can actually be useful! The primary and secondary classes offer plenty of ways to play characters. Since you have only 8 skill slots per mission, you need to select a good mix of skills based on your primary ability, your party's mix of abilities and skills, and the challenges you'll face.

well the "newer content" in guild wars will have prices attached to it, so i heard

Right, but wouldn't that still be cheaper than paying a $15 a month fee for all the other MMORPG games?

Same. It had the same issues I had with PSO. It wanted to be a 3D diablo but it doesn't know what made Diablo 2 work so well to begin with. Oh and charging for new content = poor excuse to sell the initial product in an incomplete state. This is especially obvious because it's NOT a MMORPG. Diablo 2 has set the standard for these kind of games imo, and until you can ship a product as complete as Diablo 2, support it for years, release an expansion as complete as LoD and then suppot the entire set for years even until now with NO monthly fee at all and constant updates, this genre doesn't need you in the industry, don't even try. :D

Apparently there's going to be updates here and there, but new "chapters" will come out every 2-3 months at a price that's estimated at $20. So you're looking at $6-$10 a month if you want to keep following it.

With MMORPGs, the fee is the cost of constant content updates, etc. as well as server costs.

Guild Wars is pretty much like PSO. You've got your nice little 3D lobby (glorified Palace Chat), but the actual *GAME* content is small (what, like 4? 8 people?), where as MMORPGs have thousands on a server all playing at the same time. Insane bandwidth costs.

Uh, it's still beta. They have until March to get their shit together. Besides, with their content delivery tech, they can patch changes very quickly.

WoW (and most other MMOs) are clearly superior in their social aspect, as there's actually a good reason to be outside an instance. In GW, it's strictly business about finding a group and trading items.

However, I think that the combat is leaps and bound above traditional MMOs: playing a healing class was actually fun instead of tedious.

edge of extiction for the win, but seriously guild wars is hot, im playin the monthly preview, and its getting better with every update. The best thing about it is i can buy it and not pay 2 monthly fees for online play. the games solid and it wont cost a dime to play monthly so i say play em both.

Lets not forget that most other MMORPG's charge for major expansions too. How many expansions has EverQuest put out? Sure, you do get some content additions for your monthly fee, but they don't tend to be all that major, and GuildWars can make those same types of changes for free, very quickly, and easily with their auto update/patching system.

I've played GW in the Free For All events, and on a couple of the beta weekends, and while I find that it holds promise, I'm not sure it's quite there yet. I'd like to see more focus on the Player vs. Environment areas and less on the PvP stuff, although I know there are tons of people who feel the exact opposite of me. I like the concept, but I'm not quite sold on GW yet.

WoW on the other hand is a full on, no holds barred MMORPG with all that comes along with that. Monthly fee, tons of players online at the same time, plenty of quests, and a live team dedicated to improving the game experience. But make no mistake, there will be expansions, and you will have to pay for 'em.

Err, Guild Wars will be charging for major expansions as well. And the same additions that Guild Wars will more than likely make for free, so will MMORPGs.

Well, it looks like I'm already addicted to GW from this beta weekend. The Quest areas could stand to be a little tighter, and there are still several of the kinds of glitches and UI issues that you'd expect in a beta, but the skill system and combat are excellent.

I really wanted to be impressed by this game and spend all my waking moments with it but...I just don't find it that interesting...

After playing Anarchy Online (for free no less...) it just seems a little bit shallow...

I reserved it but I just might cancel that reservation...
