How would Bruce Lee, at his peak, fare in the UFC?

Sup....Anyway...Can't believe the dumb comments in this thread. The man was a ACTOR, not a fighter. If you're going to convince the world that you're the baddest mofo in the planet, you better look like it. With that said, would he be a great fighter in MMA??? I think so, the man had incredible work ethic and a amazing knowledge of the arts. But would he dominate? No. MMA is very random, all it takes is that one lucky blow, and Bruce Lee had a HUGE head, so there....

 You don't deserve that avatar....

If he could find the motivation to train for it

goddam this is some inspiring shit.

im going to put that on my desktop. i clearly need to look at that everyday. because im the laziest person in the world. :\

This is a ridiculous topic. I can tell it's just an issue of age.

I bet if you asked kids from the 80s who would win in a fight: Hulk Hogan or Bruce Lee, they would also say "Hogan, all the way...unless Bruce Lee trained".

Seriously, look up Bruce Lee and learn more about him. The guy was the epitome of the perfect human being.

Bruce Lee as he existed in his prime would lose in the UFC.However, if reborn today with his same philosophy, he could be a great fighter. I believe he wrote in "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do

A man with one year training in boxing and wrestling can beat any martial artist with 15 years of experience

Even back then he realized some of the serious weaknesses of some of the traditional martial arts and the need to cross train in stand up and ground combat.

So then the wording of the question needs to be changed from 'Bruce at his peak' to 'Bruce at his peak with imaginary MMA training'.

Lee's phenomenal fitness meant he was capable of performing many exceptional physical feats.[76][77][78][79] The following list includes some of the physical feats that are attributed to Bruce Lee.

Lee's striking speed from three feet with his hands down by his side reached five hundredths of a second.[80]

Lee could take in one arm a 75 lb barbell from a standing position with the barbell held flush against his chest and slowly stick his arms out locking them, holding the barbell there for several seconds.[81]

In a speed demonstration, Lee could snatch a dime off a person's open palm before they could close it, and leave a penny behind.[82]

Lee would hold an elevated v-sit position for 30 minutes or longer.[78]

Lee could throw grains of rice up into the air and then catch them in mid-flight using chopsticks.[83]

Lee performed one-hand push-ups using only the thumb and index finger.[79][83][84]

Lee performed 50 reps of one-arm chin-ups.[85]

Lee could cause a 300-lb (136.08 kg) bag to fly towards and thump the ceiling with a sidekick.
holy fuck o_O

The way fighters train today is ten times different than when Bruce was around. If Bruce was born in the late eighties, and was in his twenties now, training the way modern fighters train, he would tear the shit out of whatever division he was in with the UFC. Of course, that is assuming a lot. People always ask how Bruce would fare, and I'd rather ask, "Would he give a shit?" because I don't think he'd be interested in something like the UFC.

An at one point.. but Bruce was a trained fighter and was fighting well before Hollywood. Now if we were talking about Jacky then your post would have made sense..

I'm ignorant, so please forgive me, but...

What's with the weight issue? Whether he was 160 or 133, he had the speed and the power behind his hits. Look at Pacquiao.

While he wouldn't go undefeated, he'd most likely do very, very well. He was very disciplined and clearly loved the art of fighting. It would certainly be interesting to see him adapt to MMA.
I just think he'd fair better against the guys in the lightweight class, as the middle tier is pretty much wide open.

Before you go reading into that me being racist or disliking Bruce Lee, I think the dude is fucking awesome, I was kidding before.

Am I the only one that doesn't love Bruce Lee for his fighting, but for his philosophies?

Honestly after some UFC training for 1 or 2 years he would destroy his weight class. Other than the ground-game which he clearly was not experienced in or learnt at all. He was the fastest mofo on the block. And so much power too.

The stories people tell of this guy....God damn. Probably the closest thing the world will ever get to a Goku.

Why not both?

A good fight should be like a small play, but played seriously. A good martial artist does not become tense, but ready. Not thinking, yet not dreaming. Ready for whatever may come. When the opponent expands, I contract. When he contracts, I expand. And when there is an opportunity, I do not hit. It hits all by itself.

I like him mainly because of his charisma. Even if he never threw a punch he'd still be a commanding presence because he was just that cool. The fisticuffs and philosophizin' are part of the aura, though.

Forgive my ignorance, but did Bruce Lee ever fight anyone in real life?

The replies in this thread seems to suggest yes.

Yes, theres some early footage of him brawling on the rooftops in China.

This is awesome.

In 1962, Lee knocked out Uechi, a Japanese black belt Karateka, in 11 seconds in a 1962 Full-Contact match in Seattle. It was refereed by Jesse Glover. The incident took place in Seattle at a YMCA handball court. Taki Kamura says the battle lasted 10 seconds in contrary to Hart's statement. Ed Hart states "The karate man arrived in his gi (uniform), complete with black belt, while Bruce showed up in his street clothes and simply took off his shoes. The fight lasted exactly 11 seconds – I know because I was the time keeper – and Bruce had hit the guy something like 15 times and kicked him once. I thought he'd killed him".The fight ended by Bruce knocking Uechi the length of the gymnasium

Didnt Steven Segal teach Silva a few moves, now i know they're totally different but Steve got extra brownie points from me ( I know little about MMA).

What gives the implication that the facts were false? All he says was that he doesn't know who Bruce Lee fought. He doesn't say "Lee didn't knock the other guy out in 11 seconds blah blah blah."

Who is this 'he' you're referring to?

So GSP's striking has been a key to his game since he's been in the UFC?

He's been practicing it all this time, in secret, so he could pull out his honed skills in one match to surprise someone? He didn't just learn to box from one of the best between fights and a TV show and *gasp* use ONE punch to destroy a title contender?
GSP outstruck Jay Heiron shortly after entering the UFC. He always had decent striking he just was and most likely still is apprehensive of using it due to the Serra loss. I still maintain that he could out-strike all but 3 WW in the entire division and even those fights would be competitive.

Koscheck isn't a good striker no matter how the UFC hypes him, and plenty of GREAT fighters have been dominated by nothing but a jab. Ex. Cassius Clay vs Floyd Patterson, most of Liston's and Ike Quartley's fights.

That is quite the unbias source you have there.

That is Seattle lore my friend.. and it was on the forum of the guy who got knocked out.. maybe they added a couple of seconds to it..

WIkipedia:

Lee performed 50 reps of one-arm chin-ups.

As someone who is in the process of joining the Marine Corps. that is absolutely mind bogglingly.

But yeah, for those who say he couldn't handle modern day MMA read Bruce Lee's three Jeet Kune Do books. Dude was a master of all forms of martial arts whether hand to hand or wrestling.

F the haters. Lee could take anyone in his weight class in this day and age. Shame we'll never be able to see....

lol, never mind my second question. Watching one too many videos at the same time. In the other one, there's a significantly bigger bag.
