Would this Stream 7 thing be good for my GF? Wanted to buy her a graduation gift, and she would use it for facebook, pintrest, youtube, wikipedia, reading books, and maybe the odd game like angry birds. Is this a good option for her? Or are there better black friday deals around $100?

By all means, do it. Would love to hear the opinions of others' than tech enthusiasts.

There isn't much choice in apps/games at the Windows Store. It's good for browsing the internet. Only some issues with how touch-IE11 handles drop-down menus.

These don't sound like the kind of activities you want a tablet that runs a desktop OS for. I definitely think you want iOS or Android, my preference is iOS. I believe Walmart has an iPad mini for $200 that comes with a $30 Walmart gift card on Black Friday.

Yeah, but that's the original Mini that runs the latest OS, 8.1,very slowly. Better to get a mini retina for $300, or a Nexus 7 or equivalent.

It hard to get excited when this time last year I purchase a surface rt and a year later no one uses it at home and I can't remember the last time it was even charged or turned on I also bought at the same time a touch screen mini windows 8 laptop and its slow as fuck so that too is another black eye. I have upgraded every other device to windows 8 though and with classic shell it aint so bad.

Well, sure, you bought a terrible tablet, long after it was released. What does that have to do with this tablet, which performs better than a Surface RT 2?

Right, and at this point a cheap tablet for a low-end user has now tripled in price from the original cost. I understand saying 'well X sounds incorrect so try y', but when X is $100 and Y is $300, how are those comparable?

nearly bought a toshiba encore in the amazon UK sale. £129 (don't laugh, thats a decent discount over here). Baytrail quad core, 1280x800 screen, 32GB SSD but with 2GB ram.

but I held off. Tempting though. I just keep thinking that I avoid metro on my desktop and work laptop, and I didn't have much fun with a windows RT tablet I borrowed for a couple of days from work. The split screen sounds fun for youtube while browsing, but I can get apps for ipad that'll do that ok.

So its almost like the desktop 'full' windows is the draw, but then isn't that almost unusable on a 7 inch touchscreen? If you have to connect up a keyboard/mouse and maybe hook up a monitor isn't it losing its charm?

Then I think about steam home streaming, with a pair of headphones plugged in, but is that worth buying one for?

Hmm... I think I may get one of these. 90% of my use for it would be playing workout videos in my bedroom and on the go; the fact that it has 32GB storage onboard and is expandable via flash as well is ideal, as I'd be able to put all of my MP4 files on it without running out of space. I have a shitty HP TouchPad that I got during the fire sale that I use for this now, but it's only the 16GB version.

I also like the fact that it's a Windows device, as I have an Android phone and a Mac at home, and it's been a while that I've tinkered around with Windows outside of work.

I might wait a bit and see if I can snag one for $80 or so on sale sometime soon. One can hope, right?

I think this is exactly what my wife would be happy with. She's primarily a web browser and video streamer.

The only downside is I don't think they have a Japanese case keyboard for this although the osd one should be just fine. Hmmmm this is a perfect Christmas present at that price.

Looks like I didn't have to wait long for my wish to be fulfilled; Office Depot/Max is selling these for $80 today through Saturday. Free shipping.

If you received a PayPal offer via email recently for $20 off a $75 OD/OM order, you can stack that as well. If you didn't get an email, you can NOT redeem this deal; it was a targeted offer.

hmmm. Was just making pies today w/ GF and said we should get an iPad to follow recipes online while in the kitchen. Maybe this would work just fine and wouldn't have to worry about spilling stuff on it as it's so cheap? Would probably prefer 9" though. Where's the best deal for that one?

It's been a couple of days with the HP Stream 7. Thoughts:

  • Battery life isn't that great. I don't know how they rated it at 8 hours. And yes, Bluetooth is off.
  • Screen is pretty decent for such a cheap device.
  • Contrary to Amazon's belief, it does support a 64GB MicroSD card.
  • I haven't really overtasked this machine too much, but 1GB of RAM isn't that limiting; it's more than sufficient for 'modern' apps. On the desktop side, even with a couple of tabs open, Chrome runs decently (better than my Thinkpad Tablet 2 with twice the RAM). I definitely can see it shitting the bed once you open up iTunes, this that and the other.

Next step is to test Steam In-Home Streaming. It'll probably be awful.

Would it be possible to play simple 2D indie games on these? Or simple 3D games? Old games from GOG?

If not is the Lenovo windows tablet better? I want something like this for some low intensity gaming.

I've accepted that IE is the best browser on this thing. Chrome is janky even in metro.

Question for the people who own it.
I am looking for a really cheap Tablet or Laptop with windows 8.1 that is light and as small as possible. I only need it for Visual Novels like this:
http://steins-gate.us

what do you guys think, would it be worth it? In germany it is 129€, so around 160$ for the HP Stream 7.

Judging by the system requirements of Steins Gate, it'll run, but it'll be maxing out available RAM (meaning don't expect smooth multitasking). If you can wait for a sale price on the tablet (say 99 or 109€), it would be worth it.

Yeah, i'm debating getting one of these purely for VNs
because ever since I got rid of my laptop for a desktop, it's been impossible to play them with other people able to see what I'm doing.

I don't think that I'll multitask. Just turn on the tablet, start the game.
on the other hand acer is selling that laptop:
http://www.amazon.de/dp/B00LUJ4MT0/
probably a better option

It's not unusable. It's loads more functionality with the cost being potentially fiddly setup. And a fully functional browser whichever you use.

I have a question about Kindle on this device.

Does anyone know where the folder is located for the book/document files? I have a few pdfs I made, and on my iOS devices I could import/find the files. But, on the HP Stream I can't see how to find the files on the kindle app. So, I'm trying to look for the folder where I can put them. I can import files with the nook app on the device but not Kindle (which I prefer,) Anyone have any idea?

It's Windows. Why wouldn't you just use any one of the dozens of other PDF readers you can install on the device?

You could try Adobe Reader (desktop), Adobe Reader Touch (modern), Microsoft Reader (modern), FoxIt Reader (desktop) just for starters...

Can someone please test some 2D Steam games on this thing and post impressions and/or framerate results. Elliot Quest, Castle in the Darkness, Shovel Knight, KOF XIII, etc... Please. :)

Mirroring my post on the other thread in Gaming.

I only tried to install 2 games and already had issues.

I installed fate/stay night and the English patch but the game starts and the window is hidden somewhere. Can't get it out and couldn't figure out.

Installed steam and The Longest Journey. Seems playable but I can't access the quit and save buttons since it glitches.

Any ideas?

I plan to get a BT kb and mouse probably

I'm downloading The Longest Journey on desktop to see which buttons on the top menu do what. I really don't know what to do to make it work properly on HP Stream 7 though.
