Thanks for the detailed response. This is encouraging to hear, especially how you trained yourself to not bust ceiling tiles anymore.
I won't be using the fan lol but there is a casing around a light at the bottom of it that could potentially shatter. Will chaperone work for objects above as well?
Unfortunately no. Chaperone is walls and floor only. I don't know why Valve didn't give the ability to set an optional ceiling level or way to mark things like fans. And speaking of fans, I was hoping it didn't have a light. Fans are pretty sturdy in general; you're more likely to hurt yourself than do any serious damage them. Light fixtures on the other hand, or rather the glass used in them, aren't anywhere near as strong. I doubt any gun like movements would have a chance of breaking the glass, but an overhand throw or slashing movement with a sword would risk shattering the light.
As I said, you learn to stop yourself from doing those sorts of things, but that's not going to happen right away. It's easy to forget the limitations of the real world when immersed in VR. Especially in the beginning. As such, your actions need to form into more of a subconscious restriction than a conscious decision to not do something. Unfortunately part of this formation is making mistakes and misjudging your limits. IMO, it's not a matter of
if you'll touch the fan in the learning stages, but where and how you'll end up doing so. Hence the recommendation to have it off.
In the very least you're probably going to want to take off the glass bottom (and bulbs) and tape up a cardboard box to where that part would normally be in order to protect the area where the bulbs mount. That way even if you do make a mistake, it's not going to result in glass raining down for you to step on. It won't need to be that way for the two years you're living there, but at least until you get used to your play space in VR.
On a somewhat related note, the new Knuckles controllers should be better for us with low ceilings or obstructions. They don't extend much beyond the reach of a fist unlike the current wands which add a solid few inches of extension. With Knuckles, I should be able to do a full overhand throw without clipping the ceiling, or damn near close to it.
