Jumping between Pavlo VR and Farpoint makes it clear that it's hard to obtain the happy middleground where you would want the sturdy feel of a real gun (as in: actual physical object you hold, a gun controller etc) while still having the full freedom of your arms to do all the interactivity. Aiming with two controllers work but it feels like I'm doing some abstract measurement tool action. But I love the reloading and the whole vest functionality.
It was awkward for me at first, but now the only time it feels awkward is when someone gets RIGHT up in my face. For the most natural 2-handed aiming feel without a stock, grab as close as you can to where the hand will be snapping in place on the gun. Pro tip: After you grab it, you can simulate a longer rifle for more accuracy by extending that front hand out as far as it'll let you.

Pavlov VR has to be the ultimate gun porn game.
Doing all the actions manually from loading the magazine, pulling the bolts, off-hand aim grip, pulling grenade pin... That was very satisfying.
Navigation should probably be slower and not CS like speed though, can feel it a bit.

go the full counter strike route and download the dust 2 map although im a big fan of the de_rats styled map they have as well vr is really cool to mess around with size and scale

Thanks for the detailed response. This is encouraging to hear, especially how you trained yourself to not bust ceiling tiles anymore.

I won't be using the fan lol but there is a casing around a light at the bottom of it that could potentially shatter. Will chaperone work for objects above as well?

Unfortunately no. Chaperone is walls and floor only. I don't know why Valve didn't give the ability to set an optional ceiling level or way to mark things like fans. And speaking of fans, I was hoping it didn't have a light. Fans are pretty sturdy in general; you're more likely to hurt yourself than do any serious damage them. Light fixtures on the other hand, or rather the glass used in them, aren't anywhere near as strong. I doubt any gun like movements would have a chance of breaking the glass, but an overhand throw or slashing movement with a sword would risk shattering the light.

As I said, you learn to stop yourself from doing those sorts of things, but that's not going to happen right away. It's easy to forget the limitations of the real world when immersed in VR. Especially in the beginning. As such, your actions need to form into more of a subconscious restriction than a conscious decision to not do something. Unfortunately part of this formation is making mistakes and misjudging your limits. IMO, it's not a matter of if you'll touch the fan in the learning stages, but where and how you'll end up doing so. Hence the recommendation to have it off.

In the very least you're probably going to want to take off the glass bottom (and bulbs) and tape up a cardboard box to where that part would normally be in order to protect the area where the bulbs mount. That way even if you do make a mistake, it's not going to result in glass raining down for you to step on. It won't need to be that way for the two years you're living there, but at least until you get used to your play space in VR.

On a somewhat related note, the new Knuckles controllers should be better for us with low ceilings or obstructions. They don't extend much beyond the reach of a fist unlike the current wands which add a solid few inches of extension. With Knuckles, I should be able to do a full overhand throw without clipping the ceiling, or damn near close to it.

Hmmm it sounds like I might have to use the wife as a test subject.

I will mess with it this weekend but removing the glass and taping up some cardboard might indeed be enough to prevent any real damage. I suppose it would be rather pathetic to let one ceiling fan get in the way of my VR dream.

Again great insight, thank you.

Edit- and yeah the knuckles look great. The one impression I've heard so far was very positive.

So I went and bought Pavlov with all the great talk its getting. Uhm, gameplay is fun but it is by FAR the blurriest VR game I have every played. SS at 1, 1.5, and 2, all AA options, nothing cleans it up. Thinking about returning it, have any ideas on getting the display clear?

That seems like a local issue. It's one of the first non Oculus games to use Unreal's forward renderer in VR.

yeah just remove the glass and light bulb and keep the fan off while you play should be fine

The cardboard box serves two purposes: protect the (likely protruding) bulb mount, and to replicate the distance the fan normally hangs down. Simply removing the glass and bulbs leaves you with a situation where you can still break delicate elements of the fan and one where you learn a false height. Don't want to put the glass back up later and find out that the only reason you weren't hitting it is because it wasn't there to hit.

Played Hindenburg VR

in short, graphics are trash, textures from hell. They nearly compromise the entire experience when looking at the thing from the ground, make it look smaller than it probably was. Hard to compare it to anything when it looks like that.

That said, walking around inside of the thing is actually ok, delivers more on the promise of scale and it's interesting to see the layout of the rooms and the kitchen etc.

It's difficult to condemn the entire thing because of the graphics, I mean where can you visit the Hindenburg elsewhere? It's one of the rare historic opportunities we have at the moment in VR so I wouldn't pass it up, grab it for cheap though. More than 10 bucks is a hard sell with this imo.

I think I puked a little just thinking about how much of a puke factory it will be. :p

Yea lol. It's just some experimental implementation they did long ago so it has the HUD stuck to your face and the mouse (and probably analog stick) can move your view up and down and I don't even think it has positional tracking. Probably only worth it if you have an ironclad stomach, already own the game, and are curious.

Rec Room is so much fun. I just played a game of paintball CTF. The only thing I wish was different is that the cooldown for teleporting would be less or there is some other mode for moving. But otherwise everything is great.

Beat up to the last level in Raw Data with my friend, can't wait for it to come out, that game is so good! I'm really looking forward to the archer character too. I tried the shotgun character (Boss?) and I really don't like him, his gun feels so awkward and clumsy to use for me.

Also gave Pavlov a shot. It took me a few matches to get used to it but it's a lot of fun! But easily the worst online community i've seen in a VR game so far. Every match i've been in there's been some real assholes and people I have no desire to play with.

A competitive multiplayer shooter having a higher than average concentration of assholes? I'm shocked I tell you. Shocked.

can always play pavlov with bots or just mute everyone in the online matches although i am more prone to ignore them and dance with them

Yeah i've been going the mute route, though my first few games were bot matches just to get the hang of it. I keep having an odd issue where I can't click on stuff in the UI though, so sometimes muting is an option.

What's the most optimal place to mount your lighthouses?

I got one in front of me and one to the right at the moment. But I don't think it's tracking very well. Should they be opposite of each other?

Opposite corners of the room looking down I think is the most ideal setup?

Unless you're playing seated or front-facing-standing games only, you want the two lighthouses in opposite corners of the room. They should be above head level and angled slightly downward.

Edit: Beaten

opposite corners? So I have to mount them in corners? Or can they just be on opposite wall of one another.

I don't have a ton of space in my bedroom. I probably have about a 2ft x 4ft of usable space. My bed and the computer desk take up the rest. So most of the games I've play so far has been standing/sitting only.

Closest to the corners will be best unless there's something blocking their line of sight or the room is insanely big. You draw out the play area in room setup, so no need to worry them being outside of where you plan to play.

You can do it that way, but opposite corners will give you the most coverage. Here's an example:

The base stations actually have a larger FOV than that, but it gives you the idea.

Do the base stations have to be in view of each other if I'm using the sync cable? I have a big ceiling fan in between them and I don't think they have a good view on each other this way. Finding the a good spot for the base stations has been the toughest part, I just can't seem to find the sweet spot.

If you use sync cable they do not need to have line of sight.

Got too into playing Starseed for the first time last night and smashed a glass light fixture above my head while trying to throw something as hard as I could overhead :S first time I've really forgotten about my environment like that. Game is pretty neat tho

Thank you that actually help a lot.

Hmm I have a fan in the middle of my room too. But I think if we put the base stations below the fan level, but still way above head level it should be fine. Right?

Yeah, the gen 1 base stations are 120 degree coverage, so it'd look more like this on a wall where the darker area is occlusion resistant and the light areas are occlusion prone. White areas would be complete dead zones.
Rectangular room, long side mount.

Rectangular room, short side mount.

If you're absolutely forced to use wall sides instead of corners, you want to use the shorter walls if at all possible.

Lighthouses can potentially sync via light bounce off walls as well if perfectly direct view isn't possible. We'll lose that ability with gen 2 though, so probably best to plan with direct sight in mind. Unless gen 2 goes to RF based sync instead of optical, in which case sight won't matter at all.

apparently my Vive come with a content bundle code. Should I redeem that right away? It expires on 12/31/2018.

Right now I would get Richie’s Plank Experience, Everest VR and Viveport Subscription. Does the games in the bundle changes each month? Maybe I should wait till there is a better month offering.

Codes don't change what bundle you get.

Good to know, thanks!

If your ceilings are high enough it should be fine, my ceilings are low and my ceiling fan hangs down a fair bit so I'm stuck with this config for now.

The games they bundle dont cycle every month, but they do change after a lengthy period like 6 months I guess.

And the code is only for the bundled games they offered during the period you purchase the Vive.

I'll suggest to redeem them right away in case you forget about them

In my case at least this is not true. I bought it when Job simulator was free and had it sitting under my desk for 6 months. After I finally redeemed it the games were completely different (and IMO not as good)

Given the mention of the Viveport subscription, I doubt these are Steam codes like back in the day, but are instead for Viveport. If that's the case, I can't even say I'd recommend using them. Those games aren't exactly worth installing software of questionable quality.

New weapons shown for Dead Moon: Revenge on Phobos (upcoming action title for Vive and Rift)

Really? So this means when the bundled games are cycled you get the new bundled games when you redeem instead?

What titles did you ended up with?

Well I got until the end of the year to do it. None of the games in the bundle seem really worth it right now.

I got Starseed, Zombie training somthing or other and Tiltbrush.

Original bundle was Job sim and I dont know what else. I was suuuuper bummed about missing job simulator

Recently it turned out that people who did not redeem their old bundles got Star Trek Bridge Crew for free when they did during the promotion, so you never know.

I got Job Simulator with the bundle and I played it maybe once. I personally think it's overhyped, but hivemind seemingly disagrees. Kids love it, though.

Also, the original price of 30$ for this game was highway robbery (again, in my personal subjective opinion).
