When should Sony launch the PS6?

When should Sony launch the PS6?

I think overall Sony should just wait until parts are more afordable for them and thus afordable for us people to buy it. There's been tons of rumors all over youtube like OMG the next gen console next year 2026, they be $1,000 bucks! It's like man, if the consoles be that much I would gladly just give up gaming and go oh well, I'll just watch TV and movies and youtube than. I generally think that next gen consoles will start at $700 though. Not the $1000. PS5 Pro $700 you know. But I mean, of course they can add in more ram, more cores CPU, more cores to GPU, put in 1 or 2TB SSD again. But yeah going past 16GB ram I mean they may cost $1000 afterall when you consider adding in more ram, more CPU cores, more GPU cores, it all adds up of course.
Hey buddy! what is your current gaming setup and how long have you been like that?

Zero chance it's 2026. That's a pretty big year for the current gen. 2027 or 2028.

They should extend PS5 life more, just like Nintendo did with Switch

+ More time to get more of the hardware.
+ PS6 will become a more meaningful upgrade.

Edit: I want to add that there is no rush on Sony to launch soon because:
- Xbox is on life support
- Nintendo Switch 2 capabilities are underwhelming to put it lightly (people got tricked by the Marketing of VRR, HDR, 120hz which Switch 2 excels at nothing of them)
Reportedly the Switch 2 was ready several years ago. They waited for sales decline, not technology.

There is consensus about 2028, right?

However, are there any reasons which would push Sony to move the launch date to 2027?

2029 is fine with me. I just bought a PS5 Pro, so I want to get some mileage out of it before I have to trade it in for a new model. I'm not particularly excited for a new console anyhow, as I think the era of diminishing returns is upon us. I expect only a marginal upgrade.

For me I'd be happy to wait until 2030. One big problem with game development is ray tracing, it (along with UE5) was supposed to solve the long dev times caused by baked lighting. Instead, due to weak GPUs it's ended up increasing dev times due to the performance and quality modes requiring one or the other. For me another generation with baked lighting would be pointless.

I think by 2030 we'll be able to get a solid generational leap at a price that will be comfortable for the mass market.

2028..this gen has lot to offer. We are getting next gen games now.
So at minimum 2030.

And as others said it.. by 27/28 I dont see in what world they can sell a "generational" leap console under 1.000 dollars.
Simple answer and its the right and perfect time, summer 2029.
2030. With lithography processes being developed so slowly and with massive price increases, we have to extend the time range if we want to see any significant improvements.
And then there is the increase in the time for developing games. With some taking more than half a decade for being made.
Tools and game engines also take a lot of time to develop now. For example, UE5 was shown in 2020, but only now it's getting proper support.
It took Epic until UE5.4 to implement proper threading support and only with 5.6, to have decent CPU performance.
2028. They did say that 2024 was the halfway point of the PS5's life cycle.
Around 2028.
Let's look at reasonably. From a tech standpoint, PS5 and especially Pro still look really great. Unlike past times, people who are not satisfied with the PS5 graphics do not have the option to move to PC easily and with relative affordability. The tech advancements to build out a materially more powerful hardware at about the same cost are also not there. From a competition standpoint, Switch 2 is the same type of thing Sony has been dealing with since Switch 1 came out. Microsoft is basically out of the game.

So there's no rush. The PS5 could easily last another 3-4 years, especially if Sony releases the handheld they are talking about.
2028, when it has a decent NEXT GEN EXCLUSIVE games. I dont want this gen remasters as PS6 launch titles.
I'm in absolutely no hurry for another generation

2035 should be fine TBH
Furthermore, hardware is getting more expensive, TSMC keeps raising the price, the amount of power necessary for a gen leap over PS5 is not cheap at all and PS5 doesn't feel slow.
2028 at minimum,
2028 at the very earliest.
I actually came back to post this.

Thinking again, it should launch the year that Sony think it can offer a significant upgrade over the PS5 family of consoles. Whatever year that is.
11th November 2028.
When a generational upgrade is possible at a compelling price ($600?)

2029 would be my guess year
2028 should be the prediction. Still not getting it day 1. Early adopters always feel the impact firsthand.
As late as possible, please not before 2028, better 2030'ish
2028. November 2028
2029 is fine with me.
Good reminder that PS6 hardware is set to be finalized in H2 2026, and the only thing you will get from a post-2027 launch is an outdated console.
I think Switch 2 getting stuff like Stella Blade and FFXVI is going to really make casuals question what the point of having a PS6 is in the biggest generation of diminishing returns ever.
Switch 2 is not getting Stellar Blade.
There is consensus about 2028, right?

However, are there any reasons which would push Sony to move the launch date to 2027?
Because that's what they're aiming for and Hideaki Nishino already stated that he doesn't want to delay the console.

If it takes 8 years to make a single game, then the generation needs to last at least that long. As has been pointed out, the exclusives have been pretty awful this gen with many people skipping it entirely.

PS6 is going to be the handheld version right? I guess it doesn't matter much, since I will skip it.

Well, that's not true I may get the PS6 handheld, but I don't think I'll get the console PS6 until there's exclusive games, which would be around the PS7.

Plans change all the time. The PS5 was also internally scheduled for late 2019 and they changed it for a year later.

I really think releasing their new console in 2027 will backfire a bit. PS5 feels like it's now just having high quality games not tied to the PS4 and we're getting new hardware in 2 and half years? Even i will have a tough time justifying buying a new console by then.

There's also the price thing. If the PS5 is still costing as much as it is in 2025, how much is the PS6 going to cost?

People will have a rough time upgrading.

That said...I can see GTAVI releasing in 2026 for PS5, 2027 for PS6 and 2028 for PC lol

What's the source on that, though? Maybe it was the case early on the active development phase of 2015-2016, but it sure as hell wasn't targeting 2019 afterwards. It's TOO late to change plans now.

If that were a relevant factor, the PS5 wouldn't have been selling as strongly as it did post-launch. It did.
And again, PS6 is supposed to be a handheld/console generation, which inherently brings a completely different value proposition, and should put to rest any concern over people not wanting another TV box.
There's also the price thing. If the PS5 is still costing as much as it is in 2025, how much is the PS6 going to cost?
Not by as much as you think, it's still aiming to be a mass market device.

I honestly think console generations are fucking pointless. They became pointless after the PS3. What are you really getting upgrading the hardware? Just slightly better visuals? It's literally barely noticeable.

That's why I don't game on consoles anymore its a total ripoff. Sony would be smart to just keep the PS5 going for as long as possible and create as many exclusives as they possibly can to justify getting into their ecosystem. People who game on consoles are the ones being played here. I can't believe people actually bother with it knowing how much better things are on PC.

I think a lot of people think 2028 is too soon at this moment but once 2028 rolls around and Wolverine, Intergalactic, Saros, Ghosts are already out they'll be open to a new console.

Things change fast

Oh, btw.

This gen needs to be longer. The lack of quality games shows not just first party but 3rd party to.

Naughty dog hasn't even got a single game out yet this gen that isn't a remaster or remake for example .

I don't know about you but the better visuals wasn't the main thing about the PS5. It was the dual sense (best PS controller ever) and the NVME. It might seem small but i tried going back to a dual shock 4 and PS4's old HDD after using a PS5 and it all feels like a fisher price toy while the PS5 is a much more premium product in every way.

About things being "much better on pc"...god knows i'm never going to deal with assembling a machine, specially with how expensive everything is nowadays and having to deal with all the hassle of optimizing graphics for each game. That's not for me. I'd rather just sit down, download a damn game and play it. Plus...i'm not going to be waiting 2 years for each Sony release to hit PC (and usually with lots of issues during the first months). Also, games like GT7, Astrobot, etc can only be played on a PS console so...

For all the peeps saying we don't need a new gen. Idk, anything with baked lighting is looking a little dated at this point. Playing FF7 Rebirth now and the baked lighting really detracts from an otherwise pretty decent overall presentation.

I say bring on PS6 no later than 2027 with FSR4 fully integrated by then with RTGI and even path tracing being the standard.

high quality GIF

I've always bought launch editions and never had an issue.

I have a launch Switch that still runs fine. I have a launch PS5 and PS5 Pro and XSX and none of them had had the least issue(knock on wood). I had a launch PS4 and it was fine. My PS4 Pro was post launch.

The only console issues I've ever experienced have been with non-launch Xbox and rrod. Where are these poor early adopters? In fact, I think the PS5 got a downgraded heatsink when they made it lighter and my launch PS5 is probably the best kind there is. I haven't just gotten lucky, this is the usual experience.
Had some bad luck with both PS2, and PS3 and decided to never get on the first 6 months. It helps that mostly launch titles are just "meh" most of the time, so I'm not pressured getting a new console at launch, especially with a good PC as well.

I personally don't want to see a PS6 until 2030 since the current gen exclusives are just now starting to roll out. K KeplerL2
has stated that if Sony follows the same production schedule as the PS5, from what he's seen the PS6 should be out by Fall 2027. With XBOX putting out a powerful console next year, or whenever GTA6 comes out (lets face it, they weren't going to miss the GTA6's launch), I can see Sony wanting to as well. But I hope Sony will hold out until 2030 since, to me, this gen is just starting to get going.

Good point - but even so, is it written in stone at Sony that the hardware must be finalized by 2026? Last-minute changes can still happen - just look at the PS4's RAM upgrade.

Besides, you always end up with outdated hardware anyway. It doesn't make much of a difference if developers can't even make proper use of it yet.

"Better" is subjective—consoles offer a plug-and-play experience that just works. No worrying about drivers, shader stutter, hardware compatibility, or tweaking graphics settings for hours. You power it on, and it plays. For many people, especially those who want to relax or game casually, that's worth more than higher frame rates or ultra settings.

And I know a lot of people who would send the PC straight back as soon as they encounter driver issues with frequent software crashes

2028 is the soonest that would make sense where Sony could provide a significant leap without having to price the console at $800 or something insane.

And please, please, stick with 4k/60 as the standard and continue to lean on PSSR and other upscaling tech. Don't do stupid shit like pushing for 8k or 120fps as the standard; instead use that extra power for better visuals and AI at the resolutions/framerates we currently play at.

PS3: November 2006 (in NA+JP)
PS4: November 2013 (7 years later)
PS5: November 2020 (7 years later)
PS6: November 2027 (7 years later)

This distance has been very successful with PS4 and PS5, wouldn't make sense to change it.

Looking at the releases of PSVR2, PS5 Pro and the R&D, seems they're in track for that release date.

Hardware innovation has significantly slowed down. A 2027 PS6 will likely offer only a marginal improvement over the PS5 Pro, yet come with a higher price tag than the base PS5.

Yes, it is written in stone, you can't compare a last-minute RAM change to a scheduled SoC tape-out with their co-development partners (AMD). We already know that the console is design complete, so as I said, too late to change plans.

Since I got the PRO for my PS5 day one, I don't need or want a PS6 before 2029 or 2030 so maybe it could sell at a reasonable price.
The 80€ asked for games already made me buy way less games and wait for 'discounts'. Focus on games with the current hardware it's far from being fully utilised.
I can wait.

Yes, but people will still buy it because it's the PS6.

On top of this, the new hardware pretty likely will provide meaningful RT and AI related improvements, which should mean way better lighting, scaling, fps, detail in textures or models and enhanced animations.

Pretty likely will also imply a personal assistant accesible via both text or voice chat to do things like navigating through the console, change settings, getting help when stuck in a game with some tips or even letting the assistant take the control to play some difficult spot, etc.

If smart they could include different characters to choose from for the assistant (Astro, Kratos, Kat, John Helldiver...). I think AI+the assistant will be their USP gimmick for the next gen (as DualSense features were this one).

:(

Wasn't it that the PS4 was always meant to have 8gb and they were just waiting for the higher density GDDR5 to be in mass production?
I remember that wasn't the case, but what do I know?

Mark Cerny also said that they focus for PSSR is to achieve something similar to FSR4, to be implemented in PS5 Pro in 2026.

So they are working right now in upgrading PSSR to get better results in PS5 Pro starting 2026. Don't makes much sense working in something like that if you plan to release a new console in 2027.

No, in this case it's objective. Better pricing, better performance, more games. Let's be real it isn't that hard to setup and play a PC. In most cases all you have to do is turn the thing on and the drivers install themselves. You can literally buy a Steam Deck and install games like any other console if a regular PC is too hard for you.

This just comes down to marketing and people not knowing any better. Consoles have dominated because they were once cheap and had real exclusives. Every year the PC market continues to grow showing that people are slowing figuring out they're getting scammed with consoles.

Nvidia drivers are literally unstable.

2028 is a good year to release

Time for a good new hardware development, a real next gen game, and to not be arrogant

Well then why not just have an upgraded controller? You can use any controller you want on PC. Nvme has been a standard in PC since 2014. You don't have to assemble a machine now its cheaper to buy a preassembled one. You also have the Steam Deck if you want a console experience. All games have the ability to detect your hardware and optimize themselves.

If you enjoy Sony exclusives it makes sense to own a PlayStation. There are so many incredible games on PC that I can wait a year or two for Sony to release their exclusives. They're not my personal priority anymore since they dropped LittleBigPlanet, Dark Cloud, and others. I feel like Sony could do better with exclusives, but they're not as bad as Microsoft. Nintendo is the best with exclusive content, but they charge too much now :(

I have two Nvidia cards and even use them on Linux without major issues. You don't have to buy an Nvidia card either.
Means nothing. Plenty, plenty of very vocal people online describing issues with Nvidia drivers.

I myself get frequent crashes in Alan Wake 2, and it also crashed 3 seconds into Dead Space Remake.

I feel 2028 is the best bet.

It should all but guarantee the PS6 will be capable of path tracing. Delaying the generation for a year to have 7 years of a truly massive technological leap is worth it. I also don't feel it makes much sense for Sony to go out their way to make a Pro system, only to have it on the market for three years.

2028 also gives this gen more time to impress people. The prevailing feeling is that it's only recently started to get into full swing. If they end up with a "lost generation" then it might cause people to reconsider the brand.

I'd honestly prefer if Sony focused on things other than ray/path tracing.

Those things don't make actual gameplay "better"

Now that we're about half way through the generation, looking back it's been quite a strange one…

- Covid causing game development delays
- Covid causing hardware production shortages
- GPU prices being higher due to the likes of bitcoin
- Sony's misguided approach to live service (thankfully mostly cancelled now)
- Diminishing fidelity returns due to the focus on 60fps
- Actor/writer strikes in the US

All of this, coupled with the PS5 Pro has left me feeling that this generation has only just got going.

Apart from the likes of COD, EAFC and indies were finally leaving the cross-gen period.

What are your thoughts?
Ray tracing is no where near mainstream for taking over baked lighting. Espeically not at the 4k resolutions people here want. I play at 1080p with a ryzen 5700x and a geforce 3060ti does it but not at high and with dlss , without dlss its a slog. PS5 base is about equivalent to that gpu.

The gains for cost hasn't been enough since 2020. Gpus still cost a ton, chips need to go down in price and that won't happen until the ai boom stops or more years come and go.
It would be pointless making a ps6 in the next two years as it would be too expensive. No one but the wealthy and the people without spouses will be buying a $600-800 base console.
