Thousands of New Yorkers have filled Washington Square Park this evening for an "emergency rally" for immigrant and Muslim rights, in the wake of a series of executive orders issued by President Trump this afternoon. The turnout, according to some of those in the park now, is "massive."

This afternoon, Trump, as promised, issued an executive order threatening to cut federal funding to sanctuary cities that have refused to aid his administration in their promised attempts to round up and deport immigrants. The order is short on specifics, but here's what we know so far.

CAIR-NY, which announced the rally this morning, says the protest is intended to send a message that, as "a city of immigrants, we cannot stay silent in the face of such hate. We ask you to gather tonight (Wednesday), to show President Trump that all New Yorkers stand with our Muslim and Latino neighbors. Together, we will form a beacon of light against the coming darkness."

Good. I fee like people need to be coming up with some sort of schedule for protests to keep pressure up for the whole year. Like, January focused on women's rights, and April is for tax returns and corruption issues, but there's still immigration and refugees, science and the environment, the torture program, voter suppression, police violence, etc etc. Set aside like the second Saturday in every month for an issue and never let up.
