Humble SNK NeoGeo 25th Anniversary bundle, including several PC debut games

Hrm. I get crackly audio in RetroArch/MAME from Garou. Also I've locked myself out of the game by changing bios to try to fix it. I selected NeoGeo as the bios and it won't run the game anymore, how do I reset that to default?

So anyone know how to map buttons with a controller on Fightcade?
Nevermind, found it.
If it was Norton it probably flagged it as WS.Reputation1 which basically just means Symantec hasn't seen that executable before. Aggressive whacking of a relatively new executable. Other AVs have a similiar functionality if you have it on.

It is also possible the encryption cracking code (if this indeed an old emulator version) flagged a heuristic detection because the code looked dubious. Keygens and oldschool nocd cracks so the same thing quite frequently.

Just restore it and tell it to ignore it.

(IT security worker here)

It's a false positive. It's extremely common with newer and lesser known PC games.

Ahh ok, thanks.

If anyone has gotten the ROMs to work on other emulators besides Fightcade, could you tell me which one you used? I've tried the MAME and FBA Neo cores in Retroarch, as well as the latest versions of MAME and FBA, and nothing loads. And yes, I put the neogeo.zip from the DotEmu folders in the corresponding roms folder.

And to be clear I am not interested in Fightcade because I also want to play the non-fighting games.

Well, FB Alpha runs Garou much, much better.

I have Garou running now with Retroarch/Arcade (FB Alpha). the garou.zip and neogeo.zip files in my rom folder, select the garou.zip as content. works perfect so far.

Of course the problem is that I don't know the button needed to add credits in FB Alpha lol Edit: nevermind, it's select button.

Ah okay, it worked when I loaded the regular FBA core as opposed to Neo. Awesome, thank you!

My impressions:

I downloaded Garou, as it is one of the better fighters made by SNK.

The game in there is really good... but it just emulates the arcade version. You can't play on Practice Mode, or the fantastic survival mode this game has on consoles.

You must insert a coin by pressing space or RB.

You CAN NOT customize controls, and the configuration it already has is really weird.

The graphics are horrendous on modern monitors, you can not apply filters or something like that.

No online, and I'm not sure if it even has local multiplayer.

Personally, I had more fun with the neorage years ago.

Not sure if anyone has tried, I plugged in a wired 360 and a wireless 360 pad. Was unable to start a 2 player match in Garou. Not sure if I'm missing something or it's purely arcade only.

Kind of drunk and there's a lot of info in this thread so I'm just going to ask -- are the new games DotEmu junk, or are they simply emulated? If they are emulated -- boss. Also, hope they come to Steam soon.

They put Turf Masters behind the average yet won't release it on PSN?

"It's good enough to put it behind the higher paywall, but not good enough to give it the same treatment as the Metal Slug series"

BAH!

Paying money for ROMS and emulators, welcome to 2015!

Get out of here with this! This is around 20 legal ROMs that can be put into any sort of emulator for $10, as opposed to having to own an expensive cartridge to rip one's own legal copy or using illegal means to obtain a copy. Personally, I want to support game companies who actually provide ROMs of their games legally.

Because they do a bad job. They're selling roms that run in an emulator that's not even as accurate as what some random coder built for free 15 years ago. Why would I support that, or even think that's acceptable?

Because it isn't like SNK can provide MAME or FB Alpha with their ROMs since both programs explicitly have non-commercial licenses which prevents SNK from providing either alongside their commercially sold ROMs. Thus DotEmu gets hired to make their own emulator for these games to be played on.

It's about what I expected... arcade emulation with a frontend. I like the pixels, personally. I'm glad it isn't using blurry bilinear filtering or anything like that. On my 1440p monitor, it looks incredibly sharp, no tearing or other anomalies. Sound is also nice.

For $9-10 for everything, I'm happy with the purchase, and glad some of my money went to the publisher.

I don't even care that only a few have Steam codes. I think the most annoying thing is the unskippable logos at the beginning! :p

They are ROMs with DotEmu frontends. You can take the ROMs from the installation folders and put them in an emulator like RetroArch and Fightcade and they work just fine.

Yes, the DotEmu interface sucks. Use the ROMs in an emulator instead.

I'm seeing a lot of the same questions come up constantly so I made a FAQ. I'd appreciate it if a mod or Corpekata put this in the OP.

FAQ

Wow, 20 games! Are all of these on Steam!?

Sadly, no. The only ones on Steam are Metal Slug, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3, KOF98UM, and KO2k2UM. The rest are DRM free downloads.

Okay, then what's the deal with the non-Steam games then? Do they have online play?

They're emulations using frontends designed by DotEmu. Unfortunately, they're pretty limited. You can't remap controls or switch between MVS/AES, and there appear to be bugs based on the refresh rate of your monitor. And no, none of these have online play.

Bummer. Is there another way I can play the emulated games?

Yes! All of these games have the corresponding ROMs in their installation folder. You can run these ROMs in RetroArch (with the Final Burn Alpha core) or FightCade and they run perfectly.

Wait, ROMs and emulators? Is this illegal?

Nope. Emulators by themselves are perfectly legal, and since you purchased the ROMs straight from the publisher they're legally yours.

Some of these games were listed in the SteamDB leak, does this mean I'll get Steam keys when those games are out on Steam?

No one knows. None of those releases have been officially announced yet, so we might not hear anything about them for a while.

Regardless if you just get rom dumps, isnt the pack worth it since its the cheapest way to get Ultimate Match 98 and 2002? because I am a big KOF fan, also with Metal Slug games.

Possibly dumb question, but is there any trick whereby you can extract the files from the installers for the non-steam games without actually installing them? I want to use the legit roms in FBA but I don't want to install dozens of games, just seems like a PITA.

Yeah, you get five steam keys to pretty decent ports for $10. Not bad.

Going to guess the one next to Baseball Stars 2 is Blazing Star. Fits, and it's the sequel to Pulstar which is already in the set. Guessing one of the King of Fighters for the last slot, has to be something starting with The at least.

Plus, Blazing Star was definitely on GameTap. And GameTap files were just found in some of these packages.

Edit: Never mind, a lot of SNK games were on GameTap. More of them aren't here than are.

Garou crashes RetroArch when I try to run it with the FB Alpha core. I tried both the ones that were listed. Downloaded them from the "latest" folder at liberto. RA is the most recent stable build (1.2.2 or something).

How specifically did you get that to work? I can't even find the "roms" folder in RetroArch.

Edit: Okay, I got Garou to load. I guess I have a few other questions but those are more related to RetroArch in general.

Thank goodness they are nolonger using heyetee for tshirts, still pissed off they sent me wrong sizes and never sent a replacement

So getting the 40buck bundle

I just use a folder in C:. I have a folder called $1ROM with subfolders (using $1 at the start of the name makes it the first file in C: and thus much quicker to navigate to in RetroArch). Made a NeoGeo subfolder, and put one copy of the neogeo.zip bios file in there (got it from Garou, I assume any would work) and then all the individual ROMs (the gamename.zip files). (I assume it's obvious, but jic: don't unzip them.)

I use the core "Arcade (FB Alpha)" - there are several versions of FB Alpha that can be downloaded and I haven't tried any others to see if they work.

Use Load Core to load the core, then Load Content to browse to the folder you created, select the ROM and go.

so pretty.

Yeah, I'll just get these all working in FinalBurn Alpha and be a happier camper. I tried Retroarch, but the awful controller binding frustrated me to no end. And hey, extra steam keys for me and some friends!

I did basically the same thing (on the same drive as RetroArch) but it didn't work until I created a roms folder within the RetroArch directory. Garou is in a whole other folder where I keep the NeoGeo ROMs.

Right now I'm trying to figure out a proper control mapping and how to load shaders. On the former I can't figure out where normal NeoGeo controls correspond to RetroArch's descriptions and my PS3 MLG stick. And on the latter I can't figure out for the life of me how to actually load shaders within RetroArch. I found the filters setting but I can't see "shaders" anywhere in the settings.

For people using these games via emulation - can I add these games individually to the Steam launcher, without having to open the emulator every time? I'm tempted to just keep DotEmu's interface, lol.

Anyone manage to get Samurai Shodown V Special running on Fightcade?
I asked about this earlier and didn't get an answer. There are a few games that don't seem to work in Fightcade despite being supported, probably due to a mismatch on the rom sets. There was a mention earlier in this thread of using RomCenter to audit the SamShoV Special rom into one that plays the uncensored version of the game; would something like that work and how would it be done?

Yeah I think I'm gonna try to figure out a config sometime this week but it's like trying to translate messages through three languages or something. What NeoGeo games think is the A button --> What RetroArch thinks is the A button --> What you want the A button to be on your controller of choice. If anyone else can put together a remap file for RetroArch that would be great.

Broke down and bought it real fast lol, pure nostalgia and the fact that I couldn't afford many Neo Geo games back then, all of a sudden it's like 21 games instantly. And thanks for the heads up about the four more games coming, I wonder what they'll be.

According to Garou at least:

RetroArch's "Bottom button" is A I think.
Right button is B.
Left button is C.
Top button is D.

I'm basing this entirely on what's in RetroArch's input menu and Kim Dong Hwan's attacks.

So apparently this bundle is using an emulator which has stolen code from a homebrew emulator? Not cool, was hoping this would be a legal, non-shady way to get the games on PC...
