HuniePop Steam |OT| We just play it for the puzzles

I immensely regret paying for this. I saw a video where two characters were having an argument about a haircut, and I was like "wait, this has an actual story and character progression? HELL YEAH!" That combined with hearing it's a dating sim where you can play a female character made me jump for it.

But it was lies. Terrible horrible lies.

Nothing but bejewelled and hentai. NOTHING

I could have bought Legend of Heroes on Vita instead for the same amount. I am a fool.

Did anyone mention yet that it looks like they literally ripped off the character designs from Madoka Magica?

I'm seeing all five of the characters in that OP, albeit a change in skin tones and bust sizes.

No, don't see it. Characterdesig is more than hair color and color coding.

Mami and Kyouko are kind of debatable, but that is almost undeniably Madoka Sayaka and Homura.

I dunno bout the characters being similar to Madoka other than hair color I suppose but I did come across this image of Kyu and it's... pretty damning:

I mean, the hairstyles and hair color are completely different.
Also the skintones are different, and a more defined mouth/lipstick on the one on the left.

It's basically them both being a thin, scantily-clad fairy.
But then, there are many characters that meet that description.

I could swear I've seen a Homura fanart that looks exactly like the pic in OP, minus the cosmetic changes.

But there's a lot of fanart of that series, so I can't exactly say for sure.

I've finished this game. And by that I mean I got all the CG, because I can't be bothered to grind out whatever else is necessary for "100%."

This is a curious game. The puzzle gameplay was a lot more engaging than I thought it would be, but it's not quite enough to stop the whole thing from feeling starved for content. I like everything that's here, I just wish there was more of it. The art is great, the characters are interesting, and I really like the way they're written. A full-fledged VN from this team would be really something.

This is why people need to stop calling this a visual novel.

The figure in the image that you linked is Peace Keeper Daisy from Tony Taka. If anyone is curious in learning more about the guy, here are some interviews that AmiAmi did:
http://amiamiblog.com/amiamiblog/2013/12/26/tony-1

https://amiamiblog.squarespace.com/amiamiblog/2013/12/27/tony-2

That said, I don't see Kyu's design as being a rip-off. I can see that it is inspired by Tony's Heroine series but I can also see that it is of a style that is unique to itself. Kyu's design is not a 1-to-1 tracing, period. Take a look at the original sketches for the fairies from Tony and then look at Kyu's designs again. Looking at Kyu's default image, Kyu's face is wider, her eyes shine differently, her outfit is less sexually explicit (you can't see her nipples nor can you see the outline of her breasts) and less glitzy (no elaborate decorations on her gloves), she has one of those bunnygirl collars, she wears high heels, and her wings have that sort of moth-like fuzzy impression. I see this as one of those "good artists copy, great artists steal" sort of situations.

Remember, Tony Taka is still active in the h-doujinshi realm and he does keep tabs on what is popular so you will see his NSFW renditions of other people's anime characters.

If you want to see some of the more blatant plagiarism issues, you should look up what happened to Ishikei's NSFW h-doujinshi art/design/posing and how someone quite literally traced it into an h-manga publication. You can find the article on Sankaku Complex (NSFW).

Thanks for the recommendations I'm checking them out now! :D

Its funny they announce the 3DS Puzzle & Dragons is coming out in English just as I discover I enjoy them. XD Nice timing!

Finally 100% everything.

I rarely play 3-match game because it takes no challenge.
But somehow, adding in broken heart and inventory make the game more interesting than I would have remember them in the past.

The game is great due to the voice actor and stupid lines.
HuniePop should do another sequel, but a little bit more VN ending per character.
They also need to remove the repetitive sex scene puzzle after a date.
The player should have a choice to go back to the room or not.

This is possibly the best topic to have my first post in, lol. So I just "finished" the game as in I got all the CGs. Overall, while it was more puzzle game than a dating sim I have to say I enjoyed it. I suck at match 3 games so I did end up putting the difficulty down to easy, though I still failed quite a few dates. Being able to play as a girl was what got me to buy this in the first place, though I did notice at times that certain characters would still call me a dude.
Also, the game is getting a Valentine's Day update!

Here’s the deal: you’re a perpetually, virginal loser, because these games have to be relatable to their target audience. You’re so sexually hopeless you incur the wrath of the love goddess, and she sends an almost-naked, fairy lady to turn dates with women into a video game, because that’s your only skill. You’re actually so terrible at life, the fairy girl sees your case as a special challenge and goes the extra mile to make sure you get laid, and often. The projection in HuniePop’s (really bad, but who’s surprised?) writing is so thick you can cut it with a disapproving grimace.

With your new gamified romance powers, you get to stalk a group of women with your magic radar phone, and ask them invasive questions out of the blue, because that’s totally how approaching women works. You can also go out on date, which takes you to HuniePop’s pretend gimmick (I mean, seriously, there’s porn): the “puzzle stuff,” as HuniePop’s Kickstarter pitch so eloquently puts it.

Here’s the part that almost sounds like a real game review, because there are at least $50,000 of people actually interested in HuniePop, and it’s probably a safe bet not all of the cash came from the creative team’s families. So… puzzle stuff.

Behind all the cheese, sleaze, and blatant racism of HuniePop (seriously, it’s bad: like, there’s a Hispanic girl and you buy her cliche Mexican paraphernalia as gifts) is a match-three puzzle game. It’s literally the same as any other you can find on a mobile marketplace.

Yep. Very valid points.
I think it's important for reviewers to point these sorts of implications out - whether or not it was intentional by the developers. Unintentionally making your audience uncomfortable is NOT something you want to do. Period. I'm saying this because this is what veteran game designers taught. But granted, the audience for this game is obvious so whatever.

"Making post-game play a bit more interesting" sounds good to me.

Kinda curious as to what they will add. More CGs or scenarios would be nice, but I figure that might be expecting a bit much.
Just give me a decent ending, where I confess to a girl and the game ends in a relationship instead of some fuck buddy harem where I lie to at least five girls (lots of statements are contradicting each other, so I have to lie at some points).

Pretty much. It's much more tame then people made it out to be. Thought it was going to be super sleazy and disgusting. But it wasn't. The sex stuff wasn't that bad, and the bad dialogue wasn't as bad either (there were some cringe moments, but most of it wasn't that bad). Some sexist stuff IMO. But again not as bad as I thought it would be.

The puzzle stuff is fun. I'm not into adult games, so I was glad that the sex stuff wasn't as aggressive as some said it was going to be. Although I found myself kind of let down, by how short the CG stuff was (I would have preferred more romance and pay off). So like you said, game feels like it's on to something, but is too starved for content. It's a very shallow game in some respects. And yet, the added voice overs and the puzzle stuff is a lot better then a lot of VN. Other VN/sims though have more text dialogue, and more development in the romance, so they end up standing out better, even if this game does things better on at technical level.

Just my thoughts on this. I was very apprehensive to try this out given the videos posted here, and the fact that the dev seemed sleazy with those field research videos. But I was given a free copy by a friend. So I dove in and tried to see what it was about. And I was surprised (again) by how tame it was. I was expecting much much worse. All in all, prob give it a 5 or 6/10. It does some things great. Doesn't feel like a complete game, or fleshed out enough.

How does the worst girl have so many votes?

Her dialogues is the worst out of the bunch. Then again, a lot of people pre-release liked the girl with the glasses the most. And I was turned off by the voice actor and her dialogue as well. I think people are just turned on by "concepts". Like the "school teacher" or the "nerd" blah blah and not necessarily the personality. Although I could see some people liking Aiko's aggressiveness and straight forwardness. IMO Beli is prob the best in terms of personality. I liked her dialogue, and she felt realistic.

EDIT: I'm more surprised people like Audrey second. I hated her. Thought her dialogue was annoying, and she was an obnoxious terrible person. Guess I'm just at odds with people in terms of my taste in women. Hahah. Oh well.
