Hurricane Patricia, strongest east pacific hurricane, set to make landfall in Mexico

The mood in the city is weird right now, since the hurricane grew stronger so quickly. Yesterday, no one thought there was going to be any real danger. The tension has been growing in the last hours, everyone (including me) just came to work normally today.

Sadly, there's not much we can do right now, but most places are evacuating people as fast as they can and seems like there's an order to stop activities in the closest states as soon as possible. I'll try to stay safe and thanks for your comments everyone!

This has the most perfect pinwheel eye I have ever seen on a hurricane. Just an astonishing storm.

As she's a very small storm. Hurricane force winds only extend out to 30 miles with tropical storm winds to 175. That's really tiny compare to Katrina and Wilma.

Bloody hell dude do get the hell out of there if you can. Do not take a chance. This thing will make any storm you have ever been through seem like a light breeze in comparison. Even hardened Hurricane hunters would be scared by this.

Guadalajara is pretty far inland, and past a ridge of mountains along the coast that will significantly degrade the power of the storm when it makes landfall. Flooding is a danger though.

My aunts and cousins are the only ones still living in Guadalajara. I didn't imagine the city would be affected considering how inland it is.

I don't think there's going to be flying cars and houses in Guadalajara but flooding is a major issue here, even with regular rains.

I've only experienced Iniki in 92 and that was crazy.

I've hearing different things about this storm. It's either the strongest in recorded history, the strongest ever in the Western Hemisphere, or the strongest ever in the East Pacific.

Strongest in terms of pressure in the western hemisphere.
Strongest sustained winds for a tropical cyclone ever recorded anywhere.

There are a few metrics that are used to determine the strength of tropical storms: Pressure in the eye of the storm and sustained wind speeds.

It has the strongest sustained winds in recorded history.

It does not have the lowest pressure in the eye. That belongs to Typhoon Tip from 1979. Patricia hit 880mb and Tip hit 870mb.

I have a couple of aunts visiting from Guadalajara (I am in Southern California) and they're a bit worried about their homes. I remember visiting the city as a child and how flooded it can get. I hope it isn't too bad :(

Yep, the bad stuff will happen in Guadalajara tomorrow or Sunday with collapsed roads, flooded streets and energy outages caused by the intense, constant rain.

There may have been a few tropical cyclones stronger than this one in terms of wind speed, but all of them existed like 40-50 years ago in the West Pacific were the techniques used to measure a tropical cyclone's intensity were not as good as today.

I hope those evacuations are doing as much as they can. The coast where that type of windspeed hits is facing wiped from the face of the earth type power.

Read an article this morning reporting people in the area saying they have the windows of their houses taped up and are stocked up with food. I think a lot of them don't realize how bad this thing is. 200 mph gusts are bad enough, but sustained? There's a good chance there won't even be a house when this is over. Anyone not getting the hell out of dodge is betting against some seriously high odds of losing their life.

terminal velocity has been met? This thing is going to absolutely level everything in its path. I honestly can't think of any way to survive being in its path. This is tormenta del Diablo.

If I'm understanding this right, this is not only the strongest hurricane on Earth, its also the strongest POSSIBLE hurricane that can be formed on Earth.

This is crazy, I've never seen a storm to evolve and become so strong so fast.

Best wishes to all of you close to it's path or to those that have family there.
