Hyper Light Drifter |OT| We On A HyperLight Beam

What type of game is this, if you had to compare or combine two games to describe it? It looks like something right up my alley, but I want to go in as blind as possible, and right now I'm pretty fucking blind outside of some screenshots back before release. Is there anything random about it as far as generated levels, loot, etc?

Hoping for something like Zelda/Metroid as far as level design, and if there is combat, that it's hard but extremely fair.

This is maybe my favorite game this year. The combat is difficult but simply sublime, in my opinion. The only thing that would really improve it would be a 60+ framerate.

you don't notice it imo.
It's pretty much impossible for me to not notice it. Even as a kid I noticed the difference(though I didn't know what it was), and have always been pretty sensitive to it. Most of the games I play are 60fps, and I'm hugely into Street Fighter, so it will be very noticeable. That doesn't make it unplayable by any means, especially in single player. It's just a visual preference(outside of the mechanical advantage).

Either way, I just bought it. Can't wait to jump in.

Yeah, even on PC, which was disappointing to me. Still, it's a solid game that's engaging enough despite getting a bit repetitive.
What? Why the hell is it capped at 30fps on PC? That doesn't make any sense at all lol. There have to be some unofficial patches out there that fix it right?

Ah, so it's 30fps? Damn, that's unfortunate. Everything else about it sounds great.

Bro don't let that be what stops you from getting this game. One of the best games I've played, hardstop. Exploration is wonderful. Combat is challenging but fair. Music and sound design is perfect. Games perfect to me. Might not be to you but I can't imagine you wouldn't like it.

It's a limitation of how the game was built in GameMaker. From discussions back before launch, I got the impression the entire game would have to be rebuilt to run at 60, so I doubt any mods are coming that will fix it.

It's already bought and downloading as we speak. I'm diving head first into it later tonight and I'm sure I'll be in gaming heaven.

Ah, I suppose we will have to wait until the sequel then for that then.

Definitely still get the game, it's just an annoyance.

EDIT: Saw you got it, enjoy! If you get stuck, look up the HLD 100% guide on Steam.

In other news, tried killing that fucking west boss for literally an hour and and a half. I keep getting so close...

I struggle very hard getting the timing right to for the bullet absorbing dash. He's just a hard boss, I guess.

West boss defeated and I found 5 nodes so far. Took me maybe 8 times to beat him, but I was so close 2/3 times. Most annoying one so far..

I've probably fought him over 70 times at this point, what was your strategy? I struggle mightily timing the projectile reflections or dashing through them.

If you feel really ballsy, you actually have enough time to hit him with a charged attack after you dodge his two or three slashes. That'll hit him for 5 bars, but the timing is pretty tight. Also, are you letting him kill his own guys? Try to hover around the crystals where his dudes are, so he shoots them. You can also use those dudes to build ammo--they're really vulnerable to the dash attack that pushes.

I don't know really.. I have some decent upgrades like chain dash and where I can hit back projectiles. I am just dashing around him and learning the pattern to his attack.

Then I jump in for 2/3 hits / shotgun and circle around again.

Yeah the west boss is probably the only time I felt the Dark Souls comparisons made sense, he really feels like a Souls boss in 2D.

The south area is really good. Getting strong Metroid vibes here; probably my favourite region so far. Some great mini bosses too - I love the one who was
disguised as one of the cores in the ground
, and the
scythe guy
was a great fight too.

The more I play this the more I love it. So far it's close to being my game of the year. (Salt and Sanctuary is currently my favourite).

Talk about an ego boost. I unwittingly went west at the beginning of my playthrough and fought the boss without any upgrades. I took him down in two tries. >_>

I thought the core game was pretty easy overall, though finding some of those keys can prove to be difficult (and don't get me started on the 800 dashes). The final boss gave me the most difficulty. It got a bit repetitive for me about 3/4ths of the way through, but I enjoyed my time with the game. It also must be said that the music is top-notch, and the visuals are nice to look at. A solid 8/10.

I am so bad at the X+square and square+X moves.. I can't quite hit them right. Also I fail with the grenade every single time..

So I did that west bad just dashing around and getting the pattern down to his move-set.

Shotgun + chain dash are my favourite combo. I know alot of people like the pistol+slash because it cancels out the animation so you can deal alot of damage.

I can notice it in fighters and shooter but this is a 2D top down game. It's barely- to the point of almost not at all noticeable. again, imo.

Some people have made the case that you are unable to react as quickly because of this but all enemy attacks have "tells" and give you enough time to dodge or attack
imo

EDIT: Do you guys think we can somehow contact SONY and Heart Machine to have them fix the REMOTE PLAY controls for this game? It's unplayable on Vita with the aiming and shooting attached to the screen. How difficult would it be to enable custom controls for remote play?

I'm really enjoying it so far. The art style, story telling method, design, and sound are all the stuff of dreams for me. It's cryptic enough to hide things right in plain sight, and it channels a lot of what made games of the past so great in it's way of discovery and whatnot. One thing I am totally in love with is just how vague everything feels like right now. I see symbols and landmarks that I have no idea as to there origins, and when speaking to the people you stumble across, they just show you pictures as to what they are trying to convey. The sound design is nice, and I'm finding my headphones to be the best option right now as there seem to be a lot of soft notes going on in the acoustics. Also, one thing to point out is that I really like how the combat doesn't feel like a loose mess, even though you have an agile vagabond(?). That's such an important thing for issue for me, as too many games now support mashing away at basic commands with little regards to timing or enemy attacks. It really is a wonderful piece of work...but...

I do have to say that the framerate is definitely an issue. Not a completely debilitating one, but one none the less. Least importantly, it's definitely compromising the style and tone of the game. This isn't your generic piece of boom boom "pull the R trigger til they die" brown bullshit. It's a work of art, through both it's art as well as it's animation, and the framerate just feels like a bottleneck for both. More importantly, the framerate, I feel, does hinder me slightly in reading enemy reactions and telegraphs. It just looks choppy once you have seven enemies on the screen and they all deal a chunk of damage when you are struck. At least they do in the early game where I am.

All in all, I'm loving it and can't wait to play more. It's money well spent, and time will invested so far, though I wish the framerate could really bring the entire package to completion. Honestly, that's literally my only complaint. Great game, and with this week being my light week as far as work goes, I can't wait to jump back into this and grind away. Definitely recommended. Anyone who is interested, support this game.

This game has invoked some serious nostalgia and reminds me why I have a passion for gaming.

The ambience alone, man....

I'm at the final boss of the game and now I'm trying to go back and find every gearbit and shard just to keep HLD from ending.

I'm at what I assume is the final boss - the
shadow monster from Drifter's nightmares
. I can get it down to about a third health before dying. Will keep plugging away and I hope to have it done later today.

Dang I am missing two keys, one node and two monuments I think they are all in the east so I am going to revisit and comb that place. I wish there was a clearer way to see how many gearbits, nodes, monuments you have / remaining.

That final boss is no joke. I have beat all others with 2-5 tries but this one.. I am close, but one slight loss of concentration and thats it.

I am taking a break maybe i'll attempt it again tomorrow.

Also I have a question after you finish the final boss, does the game just end? or can you go back into town and continue? I hear new game + literally saves over your save slot and you start the game again. So I won't be doing that anytime soon.

Right, all done now. What's different about NG+? And do you not even get a trophy for completing the game?!

There's no achievement for beating the game, but there is one for beating all bosses. I guess you missed an optional one in the south. In NG+:

- the black cloack only gives you 2hp
-the cloak cannot be changed, but sword and helper can
-ochre set(+1HP) does not work
-you start with all skills unlocked
-everything else is gone (weapons, cloaks, all collectibles)

Haven't played the game since beating it but I had to buy the soundtrack. Five bucks. Disasterpeace deserves the support and I just loved the OST. The soundtrack is one of my favorite all year for sure.

Down in the south section now. I've been really, really enjoying myself with this for the most part. I've definitely gotten stuck more than one, but it's been s great experience trekking through without a guide. Feels like the old days of finding paths and only discovering them because of how "gamey" it feels, and that's a great thing. A few things I don't really understand, but that's half of the fun honestly.

Edit:. Just beat it. Was that a
Wind Waker reference at the end with the stab to the head? That was my first thought, but it's a very impressionable moment in gaming.

Finally beat this last night. SO GOOD.

Going to continue my save and find the pieces/parts I missed before NG+. Love this game so much, crazy how much I got out of it and still how much I missed.

Replaying this again (regular new game, not new game plus) for the first time since release.

I started with the West area just because I originally started with East on my first playthrough. Did they nerf the West area boss? I remember having to try like 15 times on my first run but this time it only took me 2 tries (with stock health, abilities, upgrades). It could just be that I finally figured out the timing of his jumping slash triplets but it almost seems too easy now.

Still waiting for them to patch remote play to customize controls. It's kind of unreal how it's unplayable considering how they cancelled the vita version

Just got this now that the 60fps update is out and it's 33% off on Steam.

First impressions are really damn good, just killed the North boss and got my first upgrades. Combat is so damn satisfying!
