Hyper Light Drifter |OT| We On A HyperLight Beam

Yessssss! I finally finished that dash challenge.
Thanks to the people here that mentioned using a mouse and keyboard for it.
With that outfit checked off the list, I think I'm closing in on 100%
I just need 1 key, 4 gearbits, 4 monoliths, and 4 outfits (assuming there are 12)

Want to refund it but I played for more than 2 hours. I tried anyways though. It really bothers me that stuff I was excited for in the trailers isn't in the game. Same with the stuff I thought would be in it from the Kickstarter page. I just bought it because I thought that stuff would be in it. The world feels shallow to me. The exploration isn't that great and I can't quite put my finger on why. Advertising it as a mix of Zelda and Diablo doesn't seem quite accurate. I regret buying it without doing more research and playing it without being careful to time myself. Waste of money and time. I have no incentive to continue playing it. It's got a reeeeally nice coat of paint and the music is alright but the gameplay and exploration are meh and the fact that a lot of the Kickstarter promises weren't delivered on (BIG surprise) grinds my gears. Really can't believe I didn't just look it up, I didn't want it spoiled.

What were some of the missing features you were concerned about? I'm a backer, but it's been a long time since I've been over the original pitch.

I definitely think my issue lies with Windows 10. On top of everything else with this game, I've been experiencing random minimizing, as if something on the desktop is stealing focus.

It's just super strange that this is the only game that has flatout froze on me. I really want to enjoy this game, but it's killing me. Occurred during the final boss battle just earlier.

I feel like I'm just wandering aimlessly and wandering in circles a ton with no real direction. The movement is awesome, it's gorgeous to behold, but I'm really not feeling the exploration. Feels like it would have benefited from being more focused. How long did it take for it to click with everyone else?

I lost once, it was annoying and left. Good to know you dont get anything

I'm not too sure myself, but I did see it mentioned in their update that they wouldn't be able to do co-op or online leaderboards. I'm not sure if that's it though.

Ugh, I am having trouble with the last module in the west section.

The one directly south of the boss.

I get to the location on the map, but I have no idea where it is located.

All I know is that it is probably not underground.

It hasn't clicked yet with me. It is very pretty, though.

In order to avoid spoiling locations.

I think this is the area you're mentioning? If so, secret is to the right where my character is(hidden wall).

You know something this game did that I really, really appreciated?

Spoilers for all bosses:
No fake-out multi-stage bosses. I'm sick to death of games that let you whittle down a boss to his last few shreds of health, only for the game to be like "Psych! You were only on the first of his three increasingly frustrating forms!"

It sounds like the online challenges might be scrapped, but there may yet be hope for the co-op:

We did miss some things, for different reasons:

• Coop: we made a hard decision very late in production that it was just too unstable to ship with this feature. We plan to tackle this soon, and if we do end up with a great version of it, will release it down the line as a free patch for everyone. It requires a fair amount of play testing and bug fixing that just wasn't possible within our timeline.

• Online Challenge mode: this is nightmare feature to implement. We decided to avoid delaying the game any further and drop any network integration. We feel it was the best call, as we have seen other games get delayed by months for a feature that is not vital to the core experience.

That was definitely nice.
I also liked the way that all health bars, even the boss ones, were displayed as discrete integer segments. None of this "okay, last hit... WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT STILL HAS ONE PIXEL LEFT? (death)" nonsense.

Man, I hope they try to re-jig the challenges as an offline thing. Network connectivity is a nightmare, sure, but scrapping the entire thing seems a bit much.

Alright, got the chain dash challenge on my last try before I went to bed. Preeetty cool. Some questions about the reward:

It's my understanding that the purple outfit halves stamina use from dashing and special moves. Isn't that kind of broken? Does anybody know if the creators intended the different cloaks to be used as armor in most games or if it's just a bonus that I should really be using on my second playthrough and/or NG+, but should continue with the red outfit on my first playthrough to experience the game's balanced as intended?

The other question would be that everywhere I read about it, they always talk about the actual outfits, so the pods and swords are only cosmetic? If I end up choosing to play with the default outfit, I can still use the purple sword and keep the game's balance?

I am so close to refunding this. The checkpointing is such garbage. Fuck up with a puzzle (fire tiles) and resets all the progress I've made and encounters I got through on that level. This game's got a style to it, but the encounter design is ridiculously brutal.

edit: fuck it, refunded it. I don't know about this game, guys. It looks cool, it sounds great, but the actual playing part I'm not feeling at all. Glad most others are enjoying their time with it, but it's not for me apparently.

You can force saves by activating an elevator.

It clicked with me the moment the animated intro started, hahaha. That shit was so cool.

After another big post-game exploration session, I've got three more diamond pieces (two from the East and one from the North), a ton more gold chips (are we calling them Gearbits now?), two more keys and a snazzy new yellow/gold outfit.

Still missing three diamond pieces in the South, might head there tomorrow.

This game does not seem built for co-op in the slightest. But challenges seem cool.

The devs possibly came to the same conclusion when it came time to implement it. I'm sure with enough time they could do it, but there must be dozens of big hurdles there.

That was definitely nice.

Totally. The challenge should be "Here is the information you need, find a way", not a "Who can guess how many hits the boss has left?"

Man, I hope they try to re-jig the challenges as an offline thing. Network connectivity is a nightmare, sure, but scrapping the entire thing seems a bit much.

I'm not sure what they really had in mind for the online challenges, but offline ones with online leaderboards hardly seems outrageous. Indie devs throw leaderboards into their games these days like it didn't cost them a thing.

Quick question, I hope somewhere here will know the answer. Long story short I'm changing PCs and I want to move my save over. It didn't carry over when I copied the game data folder in Steam, it isn't using Steam Cloud, and I can't find anything about it in appdata or My Docsuments.

Does anyone know where this game saves to? I just can't find it anywhere.

Edit: Never mind me, found the save location, it was in appdata, I just forgot appdata was split into more than one folder. I was only looking in roaming, it was in local.

Don't mind me. I will say I do love this game though. :)

It's powerful, but that's why it's such a pain in the ass to get. Nothing carries over to NG+, so if you ask me the outfit effects are designed to be used and abused, providing you can figure out what they do.

And to be honest, the combat rhythm is balanced in such a way that using the buffs didn't feel cheesy. Like most of the upgrades in this game, they're less of a game-changer and more of a small extra comfort against the bloodthirsty hordes.

The cloak, sword and droid from a given set grant the same effect and don't stack, so you can mix-and-match to get up to three buffs at once. By endgame I was rolling with 2x stamina, 2x bullet charge rate and an extra health block.

It doesn't. Invisible platforms and hidden switches are the way forward there.

Ok cool, so there just aren't any abilities that extend the size of gap you can travel over? I must have missed a lot of stuff in the one area I've done, I assumed I had to come back later.

Anyone know if the sword upgrade to reflect shots back work with the frogs shuriken and fireballs?

I already went through the east and got the shield dash but it is tricky to use as you have to wait for the bullets to get close to you. It does work with the frog attacks.

Just bought the game today and will be digging into it for real later tonight. Played through the intro and was kind of astounded at how beautiful it was. Any tips for a newbie?

Oh, really? That's such a smart solution! Wow!

This definitely convinces me that it was meant to be used. Thanks a lot!

You can cancel shooting into a sword attack, this really helps to deal damage quickly, better than mashing sword attacks. Despite how flashy it looks, this is a very methodical game, you should look at encounters as puzzles to be solved and take your time avoiding damage and dealing just as much as you can.

You're good to go.

Welp, fuck me. I literally thought all capes, swords, and droid skins were cosmetic only so I was always just putting on what I thought looked cool at any given time.

I just loaded up the game to see what I ended up with, and for the final boss.

I had:
White sword
Blue cape
Blue/Green Droid.

I just looked up the color effects from http://steamcommunity.com/app/257850/discussions/0/365163686048189824/ and found that (in my opinion) two of the things I was wearing were completely useless for my play style.

Oh well. Knowledge I'll have for NG+ and the
alternate character
, though I won't be able to change capes in NG+.

Be deliberate with every button press during combat encounters. Haphazardly dashing or attacking will get you killed every time.

Each enemy has a very defined pattern. Stick back and learn them before rushing in.

Run along the edges before going to another area because you'll find a ton of secrets that will help with upgrading your moveset, health, etc.

Bought this on steam, but it crashes every time I try to run it. The little loading half-screen pops up and then it hangs until it says "not responding" along the top. I even tried updating my drivers (not that I thought it should need it, but you never know.)

Guess I'm waiting for the PS4 version... :-(

Same good gameplay, but the exploration is just.... not that fun. I don't know why

I would also be interested to know what features you are referring to which are apparently missing? You're saying a "lot of" them are not present, but I've read no other such complaints.

It sounds like the online challenges might be scrapped, but there may yet be hope for the co-op:

What's frustrating about the co-op bit is that they had builds with a co-op challenge mode years ago... maybe while they work out the kinks in a co-op campaign, they could throw that back in. It would be a nice gesture, at least.

I'm loving exploration in this game. I actually think I didn't do any combat yesterday while playing. Still didn't fight a boss, 5 hours in.

It's a blast to explore every corner of the rooms, looking for secrets, you even start noticing patterns and they don't look so random anymore, you know where you'll most likely find them. I love how they tease you with secret areas a bit before you can reach them just so you keep that thought of "hey, there's still that other room" on the back of your mind while going through tht dungeon, and don't leave until you find it. The dash based platforming is so neat as well, and my favorite part is to just take in that world, talking to NPCs, trying to figure out what in the world is going on, trying to apply what I've learned from the Monoliths to the current area and get a picture of what happened there.

This game is just incredible. Usually when you say this it's a bad thing, but I'm surprised I've only played 5 hours, it felt like more. Not because I was bored, but because I've experienced so much already.

Of course, I need at least a couple more full playthroughs to actually have a better understanding of the game and be able to say how I actually feel about it, I didn't even explore any area other than East to know if the level design holds up, but so far, the only current gen game I can think of that I like more than this is Bloodborne.

Yeah i feel exactly the same. And i think it's never gonna click with me. Man i wanted to love that game so much (and that's probably the problem. That and the 30fps limitation).

And i was waiting for something much better from Disasterpeace... So much soulless compositions...

You can't from that side.
You need the laser gun from what I understand and then you can activate the podium to the north in that same area.
I only know this because I spent 30 minutes to an hour trying to figure it out and thought my game might be bugged out.
Thanks!

I don't remember it being promised as being like diablo. Was it really?

"It plays like the best parts of A Link to the Past and Diablo, evolved: lightning fast combat, more mobility, an array of tactical options, more numerous and intelligent enemies, and a larger world with a twisted past to do it all in."

That's from the second paragraph of the game description on the Kickstarter front page.

Damn, I guess it really has been that long.
Yeah, that Diablo comparison completely off.

went north at the beginning.
is that the only way I can go right now?
because I keep dying over and over again.
didn't realy get the combat/movement yet.
