I’m afraid it’s been 9 years…since Metal Gear Solid V released

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Some of the best edited trailers of all time, followed by an extremely disappointing narrative in the actual game.

Gameplay is still top-tier though.

Opinion hasn't changed at all. It's by far the best MGS game and it's not even close. Gameplay far surpasses anything in the previous entries. There really aren't many stealth action games close to it.

The fact that anyone actually takes any of the stories in these games seriously is still genuinely shocking to me. The story about the clone hand villain, and the vampire, and the nano machines. It's always been a terrible story that just sets up the fun gameplay.

1. MGSV
2. MGS2
3. MGS1
4. MSG3
5. MGS4

Why the fuck is MGS3 4th? I'm going to shelve your ass with Pina Coladas.

I could never play MGS V because with Ground Zeroes it became clear to me that anything Fox Engine gives me severe motion sickness. Yeah, i know that's "me" problem but I am so glad that MGS is moving forward with UE5 instead.

Weirdly, after think Ground Zeroes was fairly average, once I got into it, I absolutely loved Phantom Pain. Like being in an eighties action film. Having Rebel Yell blaring out the chopper and Quiet doing her thing helped!

It's technically the same engine but there is no area in TPP that has level of denisity of GZ - both open world areas are barren as fuck most of the time. Plus SSR is disabled in open world area of TPP (allowed only in base) but it's everywhere in GZ.

I just played opening of GZ in 4K and it looks incredible with auto HDR.

Now that you mention it, you are right. GZ is more densely packed with stuff.

Probably the weakest main line metal gear game.

Gameplay is polished and top notch but everything else is so unlike mgs. Barely any cutscenes or story. The missions repeat themselves past a certain point. There was no reason to replace Hayter with Sutherland.

Open world was tiring crap.
Story was crap.
Missions we're mostly crap in the way thru felt repetitive by the story layout.

Disappointing overall despite the good gameplay.

Gameplay wise it even surpassed Snake Eater but the lack of story at the end prevented it from being the greatest MGS game to date

Graphically amazing with perhaps gameplay which is still top five all time but everything else wasn’t very good?

I mean, I loved the game but it’s pretty clear it was incomplete and needed far more work.

Shame Konami never recycled the gameplay into a great single-player something.

The trailers were better than the game.

And Ground Zeroes (lol demo) was pound for pound better than MGSVPP as a Metal Gear game.

Hard to Kill
I feel you bro, fight the good fight.
Don't wory it appear that my body even though decaying is incredibly resilient , that's how I got my tag, I think I talked about some of the things that happenned to me on the meta gaf thread(if you are into torture porn you might like some of them).
Anyway Metal gear had some amazing interactions possible especially with Quiet, some things that games still don't do.

You already know that Phantom Pain was PS4 Pro enhanced with a higher resolution (1440p) and a much more consistent 60fps.

But did you know that the Definitive Experience of the game has the same Pro enhancements with Ground Zeroes?

Standalone Ground Zeroes never got a PS4 Pro patch.

I have DE version but I can't tell to be honest. It looks sharper than most 1080p games but game has TERRIBLE AA method.

GZ probably is 1440p in DE edition but looks like shit anyway, lol. PC is the way to go:

And Kojima has made one game since...
Context matters, though? His second next game isn't just starting development, it's coming next year and probably at the first half of the year.
This man created a whole new studio and delivered a new IP a bit over 4 years after MGSV, Death Stranding, which is now getting a sequel around 4.5 years later, and that's without even taking OD into account.
Plus, he's starting development on Physint right after DS2.

Hot take, but MGSV's open world was far inferior to the detail and nuance of MGSIV. I enjoyed it enough but it wasn't worth the full purchase price.

Because it was empty as fuck lol. Yet you can see how much time people can spend on a more linear big concentrated space like Ground Zeros map. In MGS 5 open world felt like everything in it is just filler until the next story content pops up.

In a decade thats not a great return, regardless of what he has planned for the next decade

Shit…… I’ve had it in my backlog, that long now? This is how I know I’ll probably never play half the games I own.

Wish I could pause time when I want to play a game. 😫

The Ruse Cruise was one of the best times of my life.

PP being incomplete was one of the biggest disappointments I ever suffered though.

Peace Walker was and is the most complete and satisfying game I've ever played and PP was supposed to be the "64-bit" upgrade to it.

All in the past now, and Kojimbo redeemed himslef with DS despite that game's rough first few hours.

I completely disagree lol The way they tell those weird stories through the experience pacing and character interactions are important. In fact I'd say MGS was never about *just* the gameplay first, hence it being top down originally.

This one however felt like they went more so a splinter cell route, where the mechanics are the star but not so much the characters or the experience pacing. So it's great for people that kinda like running around doing whatever and never really appreciated Kojima weirdness or character interactions much. MGS 5 was way more dude bro friendly in that sense.

no one has mentioned Keifer. what was the point in him again? just Hollywood obsessed ?? i could see him voicing Venom, but Big Boss too?? they weren't actual clones

If there’s one positive thing I can say about MGS5 is it has its own unique energy, the open world madness took precedence over story I didn’t understand that.
