Some do, yeah. Shocking! Next I suppose you'll tell me you partied through college and still got a 4.0 GPA.

OP didn't do anything wrong, he/she called the RA, not the police, the RAs probably decided to call them.
I had an okay GPA. 3.0 but I was also doing a BA and BS plus research and extracurriculars. Obviously you go to college to learn. Im lampooning the comments of some posters in this thread, and their tone regarding the hypothetical laziness and productivity of the OP and the people he snitched on. Because the OP isnt using the sleep he got last night to get shit done. Hes using it to read manga.

That's a good point, gosox333. OP (if he ever returns) please for the love of God don't tell me that it's spring break on campus and you, likely one of the very few people on campus, decided to call the RA at 2 in the morning on a holiday weekend on these kids... Dude. You're killing me if that's the case. They probably thought everyone was home. You really should have confronted them personally if that's the case.

Damn, some people's opinions on here....guys, Not everyone posts on NeoGAF on weekends some people are actually social in real life.

I don't see why they have to be mutually exclusive. I also think it's worth remembering that "partying" isn't the only way to have a social life.

you can not go to bars in the US unless you are 21 or over, it is strictly enforced. You also cant buy any alcohol until 21, so when kids go to College, first business is to get drunk.

Actually in some college towns you can go if you're 20, but you cannot drink. They'll usually give you a wristband or hand-stamp when they check your ID at the entrance so that you can or cannot buy drinks there.

And the bartenders always check just to be sure.

Wow that brought back memories. tOSU used to do that and I just remembered it. Of course we ended up drinking anyway. Not sure how, now that I think of it.

You can still party and get high grades. It obviously relies on the major as well, but it's definitely doable.

It's definitely a major-related thing from my experience. I'm in architecture and we don't have any time to party until the immediate aftermath of a project deadline :(

I was reacting to your comment alone and not within context I suppose. TBH I think the RAs overreacted more than anything. OP was probably just agitated by the noise.

Life is all about how you can interact with people and what people think about you. If you really think that doesn't matter, then I can't imagine you being a particularly successful person.
Dude, it's a dorm room in college that you have the option of moving from.

What your floor mates think of you means nothing.

Yeah, I have a hard time believing that anyone in this thread could be more upset with the OP than the RA who issued no warning and went straight to the UP. Also, OP shouldn't be responsible for waking up in the middle of the night and resolving the problem himself. If that was his responsibility then having RA's at all wouldn't make a lick of sense.

I definitely partied in undergrad (mostly on the weekends), BUT I cannot fault the OP. He was trying to sleep. That's why I usually took my parties off campus. Fortunately, I had a lot of friends who either had off-campus places or had friends that KNEW someone who lived off campus.

But whenever we drank in the dorms, we usually were smart enough to keep the noise down so as not to draw attention. But we were usually just pregaming in the dorms (like around 10pm or 11pm....not at 2am or 3am). I honestly can't think of too many times when we were just drinking in the dorms without the intent to go out to another place....especially if we were pretty loud.

In my experience, 2am is usually when everyone was coming back to the dorms. Things still might be a little loud, but we usually weren't still drinking at this point.

But I suppose the OP should have asked them to keep it down instead of going directly to the RA. When I was living in a super small dorm, I had to ask my neighbor to turn his TV down (because he would watch movies with his door open) and once, my neighbor asked me and my roommates to turn our music down because she was trying to sleep. No harm, no foul.

Not everyone has the luxury to live off-campus.
No, in the long run what your suite mates think of you is moot, but you could always go out and socialize with them. How else is one supposed to make new friends if they don't make an effort? Suite mates have potential to become life-long friends. Same major, same interests, etc.

Clubs and classes, I found, were far better places to make friends. What your floor mates think of you doesn't matter.

Different strokes. The way my freshman year housing was setup mingling was encouraged. Classes are good for that too, but most of the time people just want to listen to the lecture then peace out. I believe the dorms and your suite mates are your best chance at socializing.

Well derision aside, my comment was kind of a snort at people who think college is all about book learning. College is about a lot of things to different people. You can use your free time to do plenty of different things, and being social is important in its own way. In today's world interaction, self promotion and learning to play the game are quite important. These are qualities you do need to progress. Even in STEM fields which are populated by people who are usually behind a little in these areas.

Right, and that's fine. I just thought that the poster I originally quoted put too much emphasis and heavy consequence on what your floor mates think of you. In the end, it's not gonna matter.

I'm awake again. Don't be hating that I read manga during when I wake up. Mango is awesome.

Well anyway here's the full story.

Coming back from watching 12 years a slave (great movie btw) and crawl into bed at around 12:20 after eating a midnight snack. Around an hour later I wake up due to noise and my roommate getting up. Que then him knocking on the wall a couple times. Not sure if they listened. Then I drift in this half-awake annoying haze of a sleep for about an hour or so after which I go to the RA and complain about the noise. This was like 2am, and his door was half open with the lights on. Then RA bring in about 4 other people. I assume the room stank, cause then they ask about alcohol, and I hear the guys in the other room flushing down all of their beer down. Cops come.

1st post gets me sleeping for a while, wake up for breakfast/project. Then I pass out again around 10am till now. So far there isn't anything stapled to my door or anything so that's good. I should go have lunch.

Learning how to coexist with people who may not share your talents or hobbies is an amazing life skill to have. I'm going to have to venture a guess and say you never picked up on that one.

From a couple of posts on an Internet forum? Well, okay. You're taking a lot from what I think of a college dorm setting.

What's your dorm setup like OP? Just curious if you could give us a mental picture or shitty ms paint drawing.

Also, are you on Spring break currently?

Lol pretty much

The wall knock as a warning is questionable, and just booze warranting 3 more RAs and police is iffy...

I am not sated

Bolded isn't entirely wrong.

And apparently a person on the upper floor complained about the noise too. Also my roommate is an international from China. He don't speak much English. He ain't going to go to an RA or confront them.

That's fine, I doubt I'll ever interact with you in real life and this is really all I have to go by, a guess is a guess and I just find it odd that you are so dismissive of a certain set of people. Sure, they may not matter in the grand scheme of your life but I've known plenty who have found lasting friendship in the very same place.

Out of curiousity, if you happen to know. How many RAs are on-call for your building on a given night? (Specifically a Saturday night if the number changes depending on weeknight or weekday).

I'm not sure but there are 2 on the East side (where I live) of our floor.

Hmm, doesn't really mean much since the actual distribution of where the RAs live doesn't actually make much sense. Just curious if the 4 RA thing was an overreaction or not. Depending on how big the building is, I've seen up to 3 RAs being on call at once and if your RA wasn't on-call then he may have just tagged along to help since he felt involved in the situation after getting a complaint directly. Probably an overreaction though. They only need 1 or 2 people to deal with a party and rarely cops.

They did deny access into the room for a while. If they had let them in and told them "we have alcohol" would the RA not have had to call the police?

You think I don't know how to interact with people I may not agree with based on my opinion that some people's opinions of you matter less than others' based on my experience in a dorm?

I guess that's fine.

Party Pooper! And at St, Paddies day weekend at that too.

I'm not gonna say you were in the wrong OP. Dorms usually have noise policies. For us, it was 1am on weekends, after that you had to be quiet. But cmon duuuuude.
