I called in a party to the RA, police showed up

The RA was awake according to OP. It isn't like OP went out of their way to wake an RA to report the issue.

For what it's worth, either the OP called the RA or knocked on his/her door. That qualifies as "waking someone up" where I come from.

I've already said that I wouldn't have done what the OP did, but I'll admit that this is a personal difference. I just think that we shouldn't sugarcoat anything.

Perhaps. I know the RA in my dorm would often be found in the main lobby or hall. I assume the OP saw the RA walking around or something to that effect.

You *technically* didn't do anything wrong. The moral police here will say that you're in the right and not to worry.

But man, that's fucking lame dude. On a weekend?

Your RA spent Saturday nights hanging around in the common areas in case someone needed him at 2 AM?

I'll continue to admit that the OP going to the RA was well within his rights/the rules, but let's be real here.

OP did nothing wrong. If they've got the right to mess with your sleep, you've got the right to mess with their party, whether that was your intent or not.

Being considerate doesn't get thrown out the window just because you're having a good time.

Odds are they'll just lose the rights to live on campus, unless you go to some strict private school they probably won't be expelled for it

Edit: Also what's up with people blaming the OP, he was the victim here, what if he has to work early on Sunday? Or goes to Church in the morning? Or any number of reasons he'd be in bed at 2AM on a Saturday.

Absolutely. I'd see the RA at 8pm, 12am, and 2am. The guy was around at all times, especially on the weekends. But I lived on a dry-campus.

Should the OP have gone there and told them it was too loud? Absolutely. Most dormies aren't jerks and just need a friendly reminder to be less noisy. We partied often in the dorms on campus and at other campus I visited to see friends. A simple knock on the door got us back to normal, or at least controllable levels.

In common areas on weekends? This is bizarre (but not bizarrely false) to me. Did your RAs get no times to themselves?

That was their most common complaint that they always had something to do. Most didn't take morning classes and packed their afternoon schedules. The dorms never got too crazy, but we had all the usual sign-in/sign-out stuff for guests until the early am hrs and they could check a bag for alcohol.

You didn't do anything wrong OP. I've been on both sides, the asshole making noise at 3am, and the asshole telling ppl partying to stfu. You did what you had to do and none of them will give a shit about who called it in

You had sign-ins for guests and bag checks?

We had drastically different dorm situations (UT Austin, USA here).

Yup. Guests had to show either a school ID or valid license/government ID to get in a dorm after 5pm. If they wanted to they could perform a bag check which was usually just us opening it enough for them to see what was inside. If an RA wasn't there to check you in, a campus guard would do it.

This. I've been that dick making noise with his friends at 4am and had campus security called on him, and I've also been the guy saying "YO SHUT UP." Nobody is gonna give a shit about this later.

I never experienced that outside of private dorms in the US. Did you go to school in the US or elsewhere?

This at least shows that dorms are vastly different.

You know what OP, after reading some more posts I've been convinced. Expecting sleep on a Saturday? What kind of lame, morally overblown shit is that? I mean, everyone knows 2am on Saturday is practically National Get Down Hour! Who cares that you're paying for housing, or that dorm rules, not to mention underage drinking laws, are easily understood and known about by everyone. By notifying the RA that your neighbors were being noisy, you basically called the cops yourself and DOOMED these people to a life devoid of education all because they had no better place to drink cheap whiskey and live it up. You're a fascist, OP.

pfft

You did the "right" thing but not the right thing.

Its Spring Break...St. Patty's weekend...the weekend...in a dorm...at college. Dunno what you expected.

Like any situation, there are many ways to deal with it. I had to deal with these types of situations once or twice. Each time I just knocked on the door and asked to keep it down just a lil bit and maybe take a swig of what they had lol. Every time, it went well.

Now if you did that and they continued to be dicks, then go RA go.

But either way these guys are engineering students....let them turn up if they want to. They wont be able to later on lol.

To everyone that is saying "OMG GO OP! COLLEGE IS NOT FOR DRINKING BUT LEARNING! THEY GOT WHAT THEY DESERVED!" You guys are surely fun people. College is an experience in both education and social interaction. Sometimes bars are not an option either due to age, lack of money but friends have booze, weather, low on gas, not wanting to drive, wanting to be in a safe and comfortable place, etc. Even though some colleges harp on drinking in the dorms, 90% of them prefer if they do it at the dorms where it is a lot safer (so they don't drive and an RA is there if something happens).

Don't be one of those sour pusses that reports everyone drinking/partying. Sometimes people want to unwind from a stressful week/day/month with some alcohol with friends. They can be reasoned with.

Who gives a shit. Dorms are meant to stay in, i.e. Sleep in.
Like anything, it has multiple uses.

I'm shocked at some of the reactions here. Either you guys never dormed before, when to a shitty college/university, or just loved raining on everyone's parade.

US. This was a state college.

A dry campus state college? Odd

The RAs that I dealt with were just basically 'on-call' all the time. They didnt have to stand guard or some shit. Not sure how you'd get enough RAs to do all of that extra work at a state college

Basically this. You didn't break any rules, if anything you might be upholding them.

Too bad like some people here think though, college is as much about the experience as the education.

I'm curious about a few things OP to get a better grasp of the situation.

1. Was it a full blown party or just a group of guys?
2. What was the loud noise? Was it music? How loud was it? (I ask this because maybe they didn't realize that they were disturbing anyone.)
3. Did you try handling the situation yourself or did you go straight to the RA?
4. Is it currently Spring Break at your school?
5. Is this the first occurrence?

I guess the tuition benefits were enough. No clue. Certainly not something I'd ever volunteer for.

Can't believe people think their "right to party" just because they're in college comes before others' right to sleep at a reasonable time.

I used to live in these apartments 2 miles away from campus with my girlfriend, they were advertised as Student Apartments but you didn't actually have to be a student anywhere to live there. The second year we lived there, these assholes lived across the hall from us that would be really loud until 4 AM on any random day of the week. They weren't just having a loud party inside either, they would stand out in the hall right next to our door/window and loudly talk/yell/laugh. It was usually only once or twice per month, but it happened on Sundays or Tuesdays as often as Friday or Saturday. I'm normally not an early to bed, early to rise kind of person (it's 5:30 AM right now and I'm still awake), but we both had early classes at the time, so we'd always have to ask them to keep it down. One day I came home from class and there was a little ziplock bag taped to the door with some earplugs and a note inside that basically said "If you can't handle the lifestyle, don't live here!". As if dealing with loud noise super late at night was a requirement for living anywhere near a university. I flipped the note over and wrote "go fuck yourself" and taped it back to their door. Fuckers.

No-fun brigade representing hard in here tonight.

I must've missed the memo that you can't have fun drinking and get good grades in college. Weird.

The thing is, OP didn't shout 'Shut up.' That wouldda been fine. He called the RA, different story.

Not a big deal, tho. But still...

Or you could, you know, go to actual bars and clubs instead of "partying" in a dorm

You should, you know, read the thread.

Synopsis: Kids aren't old enough to go to a club or a bar.

At least we agree that a dorm party sounds shitty.

It's Saturday night on St.Patrick's day weekend dude. If this is a regular occurence then yeah, complain. But a one-time thing? Good grief.

Read the thread. Kids also aren't old enough to drink legally period.

Doesn't stop lots of them from getting into clubs and bars

The OP should give them all fake IDs!

(This is close to my solution, if you replace "OP" with "government" and "fake" with fucking nothing)

It's just as simple for an underage person as walking in the door at the bar/club to get in. You're right. They should've done that.

Inhaler-huffing glasses-wearing social outcast GAF vs. inconsiderate asshole GAF: The Epic Showdown in here?

I'm joking please don't kill me

I'm sorry, is this a custom in the US that I was not aware of? That during the magical time period known as the Saturday night, people can rightfully disturb other people, because "lulz we gon party hard!" ?
