I called in a party to the RA, police showed up

Wow, Saturday night in college on St. Patricks day weekend and instead of joining in the party the OP calls to break it up. I went to a pretty nerdy college, Georgia Tech, but we weren't that nerdy. One of the best times I had in college is when I was awoken by a makeshift slip n slide created in the hallway of our dorms at 3am.

It's the weekend in college, live a little. You will be glad you did later down the line.

Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot the right to drink underage in your dorm is important and more valid than the right of someone paying to live in that dorm to get some sleep

Great argument. I guess I wasn't aware that those petty law breaker's lives and choices were considered less valid despite paying the same amount to live there.

I sincerely hope you never live in a shared living space.

2 AM on St. Patrick's day weekend at a college and you have no sympathy for them? Really? It's not like it was Monday or something. It's the weekend.

When I lived in a apartment I really didn't care what day it is. Some people work mornings including the weekends and need sleep. If you want to be loud go somewhere where you can't disturb someone.

Lived in a dorm for two years, and surprisingly never ran into the OP's problem, probably for two reasons

1. I was lucky enough to live on a floor with people who could hold their liquor and keep it down

2. I wasn't usually in the dorm at 2am on a Sunday morning

Not everyone is on the same schedule, not everyone gives a shit about St. Patrick's Day, not everyone lacks options

You did nothing wrong. If they want to party they don't have to be a pain for the whole dorm and can do it elsewhere.

Another quality argument. "If everyone just lived like me, there'd be no problems."

I'm done attempting to argue with you, as you're clearly not going to entertain the possibility that you might be wrong. Have fun getting the last word in.

I think the bottom line is that the OP going to the RA was not the wrong thing to do since they often mediate minor disputes like those regarding noise levels. He left it up to their discretion with how to handle the situation, and they ended up calling the cops, not him. If one of the RAs went out on patrol, it would have been possible for them to have noticed the noise without the OP doing anything about it. Whether they overreacted is another matter, but they obviously felt a mere warning wasn't enough.

I'm sorry, is this a custom in the US that I was not aware of? That during the magical time period known as the Saturday night, people can rightfully disturb other people, because "lulz we gon party hard!" ?

Yeah exactly.

Fuck 'em, OP. You did nothing wrong. If they want to drink illegally in the dorms, that's on them, but they weren't smart enough to keep the noise down, so now they have a problem. They should have been taught at an earlier age that there are consequences for their actions.

I would have given them until maybe midnight. After that, all bets are off, so you held out longer than I would have.

What happens when someone is arrested for underage drinking?

I think the first time I realised it happened was in "Superbad" or something, seems very dramatic to be considered a crime.

A quick look shows that even for a first time offense, you could be hit with fines of up to $2,500, losing your license for up to 90 days, or even up to a year in jail...cot damn

It depends on the state and the age of the offender. The US is a pointedlessly complicated place.

If it's their first time getting in trouble then it's not gonna be a big deal.

Did you at least ask them to keep it down first before running to the RA? If not then that's a dick move.

No music? Are you the tiny town from
Footloose?

Nope Birmingham, uk. Just double checked and it actually States "not make or permit any noise or play any radio, television or other equipment in or about the property between 11pm and 7am" its pretty standard in tenancy agreements.

So, you can't have a TV, radio, or PC making any noise between 11 PM and 7 AM? Like, any noise?

I'm usually in bed weekdays by 10.30 anyway but I imagine it's more about "don't do loud shit that will annoy the other people who live in your block" most of the other guys in the block adhere to it pretty well.

If I'm watching tv or playing a game late I always turn it down a bit the later it gets.

You did good.

If you throw a party and are loud enough to keep neighbors up past 11pm (i would argue past 10pm) you deserve to have your inconsiderate shit show shut down. Weekend? Not everyone is lucky enough to be off weekends and not everyone is unemployed. I mean, 2am? Un-fucking-acceptable.

OP did you knock on your neighbors door to tell them they are too loud before calling the RA? If you didn't try to handle it yourself first then that was a dick move you pulled if you did I applaud you sir
Ugh, i remember this stupid argument from last time we had a thread like this.

10-11pm? Sure, it would be courteous to ask politely but at 2am? No, at that point they aren't being courteous to their neighbors and don't deserve a warning. Besides, have you ever tried to break up a big party full of college kids? As someone who has been on both sides of this numerous times i can assure you that it's not always going to end pleasantly. Besides, he reported it to the RA which is way more courteous than i would of been.

I'll just say that I think that "in your block" means something different between you and I, and that I'll just step out of this thread, and that we can't really discuss this topic without general terms.

The idea is that they don't get into serious problems and he gets a better chance of remaining friendly with his dorm neighbors, sounds like a win win to me.

And at least in experience (of being on both sides of this issue) in most cases it is quite easy to resolve those situations without escalating it to authority figures.

Oh hell it was St.Patricks weekend wasn't it.

That might be my bad then. I don't really celebrate it.

Most people just use it as an excuse to get drunk (or drunker than usual).

Don't worry about it, OP.

You haven't really given many details on just how much of a disturbance they were making, but whatever the RA saw was enough to get 3 more RAs and the police involved, so

Apartments aren't dorms, you shouldn't be comparing those situations.

Apartments are full of families, young, middle aged and old people living there lives.

Dorms are full of 18-20 year olds going to school, and since there are no classes on Sundays, Saturday nights are expected to be a little noisy.

Fair enough but common respect for other people should still prevail.

2:00am and I couldn't sleep cause the noise next door. Live on a dorm mostly filled with 1st/2nd year engineering students.

RA was awake, told him that people were being disturbing next thing I know 4 RAs show up, one calls the police, que mad dash of like 4 guys pouring whiskey and shit down the shared bathroom.

I didn't fk these guys out of an education did I. The last thing these guys needs is the lack of one.

Happened about 1hr ago and police and RAs left but I'm pretty sure they know it was me who called it in. I'm just really confused and kind of anxious because I don't know what's going to happen to them or me.

I don't understand what would possess you to do that. It was a Saturday night.. you shouldn't have class this morning. The proper protocol is that, if they're being too loud, is to ask them yourself.

True but I cant get over the fact that it was Saturday.

The Saturdays I didn't feel like drinking I would still hang out with the "nerdy" guys on my floor and play Goldeneye N64 till like 3:30am. Door open yelling and laughing our asses off. No one on my floor would be asleep by 2 on a Saturday. Friday I would be more understanding because Saturday classes do exist....................but not SATURDAY!

That's cool if that's how it was on your floor and everyone was cool with it, but that doesn't seem to be the case for the OP.

On a Saturday? That's a bit much lol.

I hate authority, so even if it would've bothered me I would've not called anyone. I always found RAs very stick in their butt types.

I would actually agree with this entirely. We had this happen a few times at Purdue. It was sort of an unwritten rule, and we always understood when someone asked.

Speaking as someone who was a first year engineering student who was reported on at 11 pm on a saturday when me and 3 friends decided to split a bottle of vodka and played some drinking games and board games, this is some shit. If the onduty RA wasnt cool about it I wouldve had to deal with a drinking ticket and possible educational probation.

Considering I went on to work as a front desk person in a dorm with no RAs and essentially was a building RA and had to do rounds, I can tell you that the police being called could just have been because the RA was just as spineless and didnt want to deal with the room himself.

Invest in a set of earplugs, or learn how to sleep when it isnt completely silent. It's god damned st patricks day, deal with it for a day instead of tattle and then live blog it to GAF instead of sleeping.

I most likely would have either been,
A. Partying with them
B. Partying with friends
C. Having a nightcap in my room
D. Passed out for the night

If I was still in school, but that's me. I'm older now so I would side a bit with OP but not by much haha.

All I got to say is I don't want to see OP's ass posting in GAF for at least a few hours now! >:-)

Honestly I would never call on anyone, but that isn't to say they didnt deserve it.

I don't really like to party anyway, so is probably be trying to get some sleep or just on my computer at that hour.
