I cant shake the feeling of wanting to move to a real life place because of some of my fav games.

I played Vice city when it first came out on ps2. It took me to a place where cursing along in Infernus while listening to some of the magical 80s track took me to a different, beautiful space of my own. Same with San Andreas and some other games.

Now i know how shitty the real life places are if you choose to look at it. I have seen lots of post around the internet about how dirty some of these places are, or some of the baffling news these places get tied to. But its undeniable that the aforementioned games have managed to capture the real essence of these places and have delivered an experience im sure, many of you commonly share. And coming from a cold country where its dark almost 6 months a year doesn't help my cause either.

Is it false to go through this feeling a game creates, especially as someone who loves gaming so close to the heart? I have this sentiment that i want to live in this world that i so dearly love, and just cursing in it virtually isnt cutting anymore.

Is it just an imaginary wonderland that i create in my mind ? Or can it be real ? Has anyone embarked on such journey ? Like moving from one state to other ? or one country to another ? How it panned out ? Or is it just exclusive to gaming and the real world is totally different (which i assume it is)?

But then again, i went to Italy, Venice and then i was nauseated by how close it looked to that Tomb Raider 2 level called venice I Would love to hear Gaf's thought on it.

Edit: Im talking about the scenic aspect mostly. Nothing to do with story or characters, but the world it creates, the atmosphere and the general feel.

Do you always compare video games to real life?
I've got news for you one is real one isn't , living in a fantasy world isn"t healthy.

Not really. Just the general feel of it. I see it as an art more than anything, no politics. no drama or agenda, just pure, simple art that is moving enough to give you an afterthought.

Also, read OP.

I think this is somewhat common.

I wish to travel to many places because of the architecture influence I saw in games or movies. Even books have this kind of impact in me. There are many beautiful places in this world. It is not only in videogames. Some photos a friend of mine took in Germany, in some castles could easily be an inspiration for Dragon's Dogma.

Moving out to Japan, Germany, Italy, etc is another matter. My first impulse is "hell yeah"! But there are many other complexities like, I don't know enough about their way of life/customs and don't know if I would integrate. You only know this for sure only when you go live there for some time. There are the matter of vistas also, which, in today's political landscape is very messy and complicated.

Japan is a special place for me. It is even kind of mythical since many of my favorite games and gaming culture came and took place in there. I would love to visit Capcom headquarters.

When I have money I will travel the world.

Considering the GTA games are modeled after real life places I guess I can understand . I've been to South Beach Miami a hell of a lot of times and they did nail the look if it pretty much in Vice City (even parts of Collins Ave!) .I do think that they fail to nail the essence of the place though as the feel of it might disappoint because it's the people (or lack there of ) that makes a place what it is and there are TTTTTOOOONSSSS of people and cars there ! If you ever wanted to walk up and down the "strip" it is so crowded even at 11-12 at night that you're trying to make your way though people , it's like trying to walk through midtown Manhattan during lunch in the summer.

Sorry, what?

I feel ya, bro.

I've had quite a few games that've made me feel like I should pack my bags and find a different place to spend my time in. Like this cozy cabin in The Long Dark:
latest

The forest town in Alan Wake. Really, just the Spanish colonial light house or the hydroelectric building retrofitted as a domicile.

Or Rapture without all the horror.

Always wanted to live in Blighttown. Seems like such a cozy place. Warming myself at the bonfire while chatting with Maneater Mildred about the state of the world. Beautiful.

Just cause i love the atmosphere in fallout doesn't mean i want a nuclear fallout in real world.

Sticking to the topic, albeit a little contradictory, I'd also would totally live inside that giant dinosaur figure in Novac (Fallout New Vegas), overseeing the vast Mojave desert. I get that cozy feeling every time im inside that thing, ahem, sleeping on that nice cozy bed and other decorations making myself right at home, waking up with toothbrush in my hand looking over the desert from the mouth of a giant dino.

OP i know what you mean i thought about the same thing many times.

I think i love tropical places because of some old games/anime etc. It makes me feel nostalgic and happy when i see something tropic.

Totally man, I often feel kinda empty when I finished a game after having spent so much time in its world. Like with Fallout 3 & 4, Oblivion. Skyrim and Bioshock series. But then I try to imagine myself living in a place like that.. desolate and scary most of the time.. and I'm kinda glad I live in the real world :)

The closest I can relate with this, OP, is that I used to imagine living in a Final Fantasy scenario.

Joke's on me, I guess because we're actually living in one after all...

Totally the opposite feeling for me, i keep hoping for open world games in my favorites european cities (marseille! edinburgh! valencia!)

I want to live in Hyrule.

It can never happen :lollipop_pensive:
Maybe they'll build it in the future, so you can visit it.

If Super Nintendo World is a huge success. After the Mushroom Kingdom, it's only natural that they'd do Hyrule.

For you OP:

Whut? Why? Nepal for sure is on my bucket list. 😍
Well lets say it started with our layover in bangladesh coming from bangkok.
You havent seen 3rd world till you went to bangladesh.
Then took the plain to katmandu with window frame falling off inside next to me all while going trough a nice storm.
In katmandu the hotel had black water coming out the tap and shower.
Nice smells here and there incuded.
Children sleeping on rocks and concrete outside at night, burning dead bodies in front of everyone yes its their way to do it , still, cows on the roads everywhere etc etc
No real roads gravol everywhere.
Took the bus to chitwan to the jungle. Drove almost off the cliff. Which happens very often.
Saw dead body sticking out of the mudd on the way. Probably someone left from a muddslide.
Pokara was decent.
But then the yeti airline that we took on the way back to katmandu crashed the next day. Lucky it wasnt us.
So yeah no wont go back.
Ever.
Chitwan jungle was nice though. Saw rhinos up close. But getting there and back was a thrill for life.
Saw a bunch of yogis. Well hippies .
Didnt go hiking but had a nice view of the himalayas. Also on the way back saw the himalayas sticking out above the clouds which looked cool.
This in short.
