I don't "get" TLOU

Maybe you can help me out here, GAF. Maybe not.

Long story short, I don't like The Last of Us. I'm probably not alone, but I also realize that this is undoubtedly an unpopular opinion here, so we tend to stay quiet, those of us who think this way.

That's not to say I hate it, or that I think it's a bad game. Far from it. It's drop-dead gorgeous, of course (I'm a bit of a graphics whore, so that doesn't hurt). The story so far (I think I'm about a third of the way through) is interesting, if somewhat predictable at this stage.

But I just can't find myself getting engaged by the gameplay, and I can't quite put my finger on why. Gameplay is solid, course, as expected from ND. It's not the stealth element, as I can play the hell out of games like MGS.

Whatever it was, I just found myself unable to get "into" the game like I usually can with most games. I felt like I was struggling to just get to the next part, and I kept wondering where this amazing game was that everyone kept talking about.

Does it get better? Does it change up later, or is it going to be more of this for another eight hours? Because I'm not sure I can slog my way through it if that's the case. People talk about how great the ending is, and I've done a good job of not spoiling it for myself, so I could still experience that if I can just get to it.

Help me, GAF! Help me understand why everyone is pissing themselves over TLOU coming to PS4. Help me give a shit enough to maybe pick it up and go through it a second time. Because as it is right now, I couldn't care less about the Remastered Edition, and I may not even finish the PS3 edition.

I'm right there with you.

Edit: I did end up beating the game, and I thought it was a graphical powerhouse, but otherwise a "pretty good" game. The amount of near-worship it gets is staggering.

Seriously, this comic is apt. It's okay, dude. There's nothing to "understand" if you don't like it. You don't have to like it.

Sometimes you ..just don't like certain games. It's just how it is

ps: for me personally it's one of the best games ever made.

To be honest I don't even get how you arrived at this conclusion even reading your post, so I doubt I know the solution.

According to you: The visuals are drop-dead gorgeous and you're a self-admitted graphics whore; you say the story is interesting albeit predictable and that the gameplay is solid. You're just not engaged by it anyway?

The only conclusion I get from this is that the game must therefore not be for you, if you think it's pretty much all good but still don't enjoy it.

I took a HUGE break from it, for a couple months. And, I said AGAIN its one of the BEST GAMES I have played and, i feel what you are saying about it KICKING your ass over and OVER again. THAT SUCKS.

-Try it on easy?

- Take a break from it for a bit.

- Maybe it's just not for you 0_0

The story is the best thing. If you don't particularly care for it, you'll find the game to be pretty standard stuff. Nothing worth dwelling on.

First finish the game and after start the Survivor difficult... you will understand.

Now if even after that you don't like it... it is fine... people have different tastes ;)

I finished it, I enjoyed it, but I feel it is WAAAAY overrated.

The gameplay and enemy design is unimaginative and too similar to the Uncharted series imo.

I think Naughty Dog should do something drastically different for their next game to live up to their unchallenged reputation.

I don't really play that style of game much. I didn't play TLoU, nor the Uncharted Series... But at the same time, I enjoy *watching* someone play quite a bit. Maybe it's just my own disinclination towards the control type? Not sure. Regardless, I recognized the quality of the storytelling, the characters involved, and the psychology behind things, as well as a striking setting/narrative flow.

Just... not something I played, personally. I also seem to notice that some people that didn't like the game get frustrated with how much praise it gets, and people that loved it get frustrated with people that don't seem to enjoy it... So both sides get defensive with each other and it makes it less of a difference of opinion and more of a "YOU'RE WRONG FOR NOT AGREEING."

I don't think you're "doing it wrong" OP. Maybe it just doesn't click with you. I don't like Halo. I don't think I'm gaming wrong.

tbh the game has a really slow burn the first few hours. It picks up a lot once you hit Fall. But having said that you don't have to like every game that the popular opinion likes. If you don't like something it is okay to not like it. No need to try and force yourself to like something just because everyone else seems to.

Yeah the gameplay wasn't mind blowing. It could get fun but it was definitely not the best part of the game.

I think the game was really good, not game of the generation like some here think.

I really like the game OP but I don't "Love it". Therefore I consider it slightly overrated but I can see why it appeals to so many.

I'm not sure. Maybe you're drunk and angry at the world. Maybe you're the kind of person who sticks forks into plug sockets. Maybe you're the kind of person who gives forks to babies to stick into plug sockets. The reasons are endless.

If it helps, I thought the first third of the game was only so-so but I enjoyed it more and more as I went on. It turned out to be my GOTY.

It was more so about the "experience" than just the game itself.

The pedigree, the hype, being an actual mature game in my opinion. The game itself was really good, too, and the stuff it did was usually done really well.

But I just can't find myself getting engaged by the gameplay, and I can't quite put my finger on why. Gameplay is solid, course, as expected from ND. It's not the stealth element, as I can play the hell out of games like MGS.

Have to agree with you, I didn't enjoy many of the shooting battles and really hated several of the 'stealth' sections. One of the early stealth sections was so tedious and annoying I would have paid £2 for a microtransaction to skip it. It was the story that really made that game, I kept feeling like I wanted the really busy fight/stealth sections to get out of my way so I could see more of the story, they felt like a chore.

It's a very decent game with a story that invokes certain feelings. The characters are the main attraction, while the gameplay is very eh. There's not much to get, honestly.
Don't worry about not getting it. It's a decent game to some, and a GOTY for others. No wrong opinions on it, for sure.

There's nothing which needs to be understood, the game's not for you. Plenty of games out there which got rave reviews, but there's always bound to be a group who don't share the same sentiments.

In the end, you can't please everyone and this pretty much applies to anything.

Yo, Up was garbage...

See? It hurts doesn't it? Meanie.

To be serious, it certainly does get better, for me anyway, I even think the first few hours are a little too slow, but it never builds to a fundamentally different experience. It's not for everyone, it's just not for you it seems.

Perhaps you have fifteen fingers on each hand and no eyeballs? Perhaps your head is made out of corrugated cardboard and crepe paper? Maybe your intelligence is stored online and you have a low ping..?

Amazing ending? I thought the ending was quite poor... and the controls quite bad. But I like a lot of what the game did and tried to do. I really liked the multiple season approach and the length of time the story seemed to follow which doesn't happen often in games.

I enjoyed the game for the gameplay within it, but I have to say I didn't find the story at all "emotionally resonant" as many others say.

Half of this doesn't make sense.

You say "i don't get it" and then say "but it appeals to my likes" and then "i don't like the gameplay" but then "i like this style of gameplay"

You're not specific at all on what you don't like, so how is anyone going to explain otherwise?

It's a movie disguised as a game that spends most of its time building up women and minorities just so they can be killed in order push Joel's narrative forward.

I had similar feelings, besides the interesting opening, the story was not engaging enough for me to care about the main characters. That and I was frusturated with how poor it ran on the ps3. I still beat the game, but I hated the ending as well.

Hoping the ps4 version can change my opinion.

Kinda this. IMO the appeal of it seems fairly obvious, great production values (graphics, voice acting, atmosphere, etc) tied to pretty solid gameplay, just like Uncharted. I can also see why some people wouldn't be that impressed by it though, especially the people who are all about gameplay first.

It's not exactly a science lol. Sometimes the smallest thing can cause you to like or dislike a game. There's just something about the atmosphere or in the gameplay mechanics that dont let the game click for you. It's not your fault or the games fault.

I played through it and thought it was okay. The story and characters were awesome, and the gameplay was 'alright'. Overall I thought it was a solid game, but vastly overrated (imo)

While I think the gameplay, presentation and multiplayer are all great, what really makes the game stand out for me, is that you could watch any of the cinematics in front of other people without wincing or feeling awkward, unlike so many other games.

The story isn't groundbreaking or anything, but it's just told really, really well.
