I don't "get" TLOU

What's not to get? It takes the strong narrative from the tt walking dead games and puts it in a great looking and highly polished third person shooter with some new ideas such as crafting.

No one has made stealth this good. No one has made crafting this easy and genuinely worthwhile I got the game of a lifetime last summer on the PS3. The story isn't what can be considered original. The difference here is how it's tackled and presented. It's a remarkable achievement. I'm grateful that this summer I'll get to the opportunity to play Remastered on PS4.

As for you, finish the game and then report back with your opinion. I would hate to live my life in a way that I have to compare my experience, one third of the way into something to that of a large group of people. Especially when you're coming from an angle that sounds like you sound like there's a requirement driving you to fall in line with others. No matter how hard creative people try, they can't and won't satisfy everyone. People have different opinions and experiences. Don't let my praise or the large and sometimes overwhelming amount of praise distort how you view the game or any game for that matter.

Always funny seeing the hyperbole at the other end of the love/hate spectrum. We got ourselves a 25 page thread coming.

I loved it, you on the other hand didn't that is alright. Opinions are welcome and everyone will embrace you for speaking freely.

I will now prepare to washed in the fires of hell for what I will type next.

I don't like Smash Bros.

Love you GAF...

Wut bruh. You should make a thread about that!

you don't need other opinions to form your own opinion... or else you will be liking it because others do. If you WANT to see other people's opinion... its everywhere over GAF, nothing NEW is going to be said here, that you couldn't have read on these forum. Not everyone is going to like a game no matter how good it is.

It does get better but since you couldn't really point out the reason you didn't like the game there's not much anyone can do to help you with that.

It's good, but insanely overrated. I think if you tempered your expectations you would enjoy it.

Once I started ignoring the hype machine and just played the game I had a good time with it. You're probably just expecting too much.

I'm worse than you, I haven't even rented it. Just not my kind of game, I can see why other people like it. Different strokes and all.

You may feel similar to how the Polygon editor who reviewed it felt -- like the game's depressing tone, brutality, and at times frustrating mechanics made it feel like more of an ordeal to play.

I felt that way at first, something that reminded me of Uncharted 3 (where I felt like I was just playing through to go from one frustrating set piece to another), but the game was much better paced than UC3 so this feeling didn't last -- for me.

To me, it's the best game ever made. I love it. The premise is used often "survive the apocalypse" but they took that premise and spun it on its head using countless story pieces that ultimately, for me, created a beautiful puzzle. It was magnificent. I love the gameplay and the characters.

It's okay that you don't like it. I get it. It may not be for everyone but it was DEFINITLEY for me. Loved it.

it's still a AAA blockbuster with all the mechanically conservative pitfalls which comes with the territory.

personally, i find that naughty dog's games never really play to the strengths of the medium and follow a lineage closer to something like dragon's lair than any of the games i can sink neck deep in to. it's clear that some people find that even surface level interaction helps draw them in to what are largely non-participatory cinematic experiences and can elevate their enjoyment of them past even their favourite movies, and for those people, TLOU is gaming's high water mark.

personally, i find something like hotline miami to be far more compelling in its delivery of narrative due to the developers ability to directly wire the games mechanics into its telling. when i plugged myself into HM every, synapse fired on a participatory level. compare this with the feeling generated by naughty dog titles, where participation feels like little more than guiding the lead character through a deliberately paced cutscene.

but then, i'm an emergent narrative junky. the narrative generated by a six player civ game between friends or a twelve hour slog through chernarus is where the medium's ability to tell stories really shines.

I have no interest in it I think because it's some form of survival horror game. I didn't understand the hype for it. I can't really say if it's good or bad since I didn't play it.

Why is it that every time a positive thread appears about TLOU it's always followed by another thread like this? It happens on all forums and I'm genuinely interested in the reason.

The Kane thing is fucking stupid. The people saying that don't even know why Kane is an important film.

Rosebud right? And the GIF? And Rosebud.....

OT If you don't like something and seek others to help you like it you either crave the attention of people trying in vain to get you to like it or of those who share your opinion. I generally find it's the latter.

Don't worry, I'm in exactly the same place you are. its pretty as hell, production values are stellar and I am about a third of the way through.

And I haven't touched it in a couple of weeks. I feel almost no compulsion to play it. Pikmin 3 was my GotY but I thought that maybe it was just because I hadn't played TLoU. Now I can confirm that I was right the first time. Honestly, its not even in my top 3. I even place Nintendoland above it since I had more fun playing its many original mini games than this, in the end, rather generic stealth 3rd person cover game. I've been told that I should play the multiplayer, but I honestly can't make myself. One day I will, but with my limited time due to work, working out and cooking, I find myself discouraged from booting it up because I know I'm going to get another couple of cutscenes with some decent gameplay in between. Don't have the time. And the game doesn't force me to want to make the time.

I don't know what you mean, I think TLoU is incredible, I just think it's a very poor comparison.
I'm saying it's uninformed people shrugging off any criticism with a silly remark instead of actual critical thought.

Much like all of the "okay whatever man" posts in here.

For me what I really enjoyed is the great sense of tension that can come from the combat on higher difficulties. I disabled listen mode right off the bat (to the point where its kind of jarring watching youtube videos of the game when I see it used) and I think that really helped the experience.

When playing on normal you very quickly get to the point where you can almost play it like a shooter. On the higher difficulties where you can die very quickly and have more limited resources the game forces you to be a bit more creative. I loved the "hit & run" feel to it, being detected wasn't immediately reload checkpoint time. You could get detected, throw a brick into a dudes face and bash his head in and then run away, hide, and find a better position to flank and do it again.

The combat really is very simple, but I feel like it gives you just enough to create a lot of great, intense little moments.

Of course, none of this is mentioning the fantastic graphics, story, characters etc. that makes it such a complete package for me.

My boyfriend has the same thoughts as you OP. It has been a struggle getting him to play the game..got him only 1/3rd of the way through until he quit :/

He promised to try it again on the PS4 though..

Sometimes you ..just don't like certain games. It's just how it is

ps: for me personally it's one of the best games ever made.

.

i had dropped story driven games from my life entirely before tlou.i took a piss during cut scenes. waited for my next objective marker to appear.

playing on the hardest difficulty is also the best way to go with tlou. such tension

and i honestly cant stand the uncharted series ive bought all three titles multiple times during slow release periods and never finished one once, just became disappointed in myself for giving in.

Seriously, this comic is apt. It's okay, dude. There's nothing to "understand" if you don't like it. You don't have to like it.

This comic is a pretty lame response to an opinion on a discussion board where people come to express opinions.

It isn't clever. It's idiotic and facile.

There's something wrong with a medium when you feel like you have to like anything.

Do we do that with books or music? No!

Consensus of opinions is not something we should strive for just so we're agreeable. It should be genuine.

And I say this as TLOU fan. It's not for you. It ain't no biggie.

Change the difficulty to Hard and turn Listen mode off.

Congratulations, your TLoU gameplay has instantly evolved from a third-person shooter with a few novel twists and some easily ignorable mechanics to something much better: a fantastically unique and well-executed fusion of stealth, action, and survival horror the likes of which has never been created before.

Everybody has their share of games that the majority likes, but you just can't get engaged to it no matter how hard you try. It's normal dude. :P

Long story short, I don't like The Last of Us.

Some people aren't gameplay first? RIP gaming snakesalute.webm

I'm guessing you're probably being sarcastic, but yeah.
Lots of people, even on GAF probably. Naughty Dogs games have all the AAA tropes people complain about here, it's just that the execution is better.

I personally can enjoy either type of game.

I also have not finished it and it's not compelling me to. I absolutely hate the gameplay because of stealth focus and the way it makes you feel bad for using your weapons because you have to watch out for your ammo and health. I don't want to stress over that bullshit.

I thought UC3's gameplay was perfection (but its story sucked) for a third person shooter, because you can't just stay behind cover and shoot like UC2. The slow, stealth paced TLOU is a big step back IMHO. I don't want to look for bricks and bottles and all that bullshit, that just slows the fun shooty part down.

I was wary of TLOU since I found the Uncharted games to be a bit tedious with the average shooting mechanics and endless waves of baddies. I was surprised now much TLOU nailed everything for me in a game with the great mixture of tension, gameplay, and narrative. I still haven't gotten around to the MP yet. The story dlc was okay and a bit overpriced and I didn't care for the whole lets go explore a mall with two kids part. It's not bad and pitting your enemies against each other was fun.

I'm the same.
For me it's to do with the narrative.
Same with Uncharted. I don't like Naughty Dog's method of having the characters constantly talking as you traverse scenery from one set piece to another, I can't say exactly why it doesn't click with me, I just don't particularly enjoy it, I think it's quite repetitive.

It gets a lot better, I certainly was pretty bored by the first few hours as well. On the other hand it sounds like it might not be the game for you at all. Try to get to Fall/Winter and see if you enjoy it more. If not, probably stop.
