Well, I got a lawyer, and from what I understand, it looks like I'm looking at a moderate fine of around 750 probably, suspended license for a year with restricted to go to work/church/doctor/driving classes, six months with the ignition-lock system which will cost me, and the DUI Class which is 2 hours I think for 12 weeks. And likely all the jail time will be suspended but hang over my head in case it happens again---which, I don't plan to. Like I'm literally considering giving up alcohol period, I just don't think I can handle it.

I go to court the 15th of September.

Youre not sure if you should give up alcohol?

Good grief. Dont drink until you get a grip on your life and put this behind you.

Sometimes you can take those classes and be verified sober (either by medication or blow tests) and they go more leniently on you in court. I don't know if the lawyer mentioned that. Anyway, it seems like you are going to get a boilerplate sentencing so just get ready for a year of crap.

If that's a light sentencing, you got off rather easy.

Pray that the judge isn't an asshole.

Well, court was today, the process was relatively smooth...

Turned out to be what I expected. A fine of $400~, + VASAP classes and the Ignition Interlock System, and the one-year restricted suspension. I should be able to go to work which is good, and I only work about five minutes from home so there shouldn't be any major issues.

There's so many little details and such that it's pretty overwhelming and I'm terrified of messing up something on accident. But, overall, I think the outcome was better than it could've been for everyone involved, and this year shouldn't be too bad once I get into the groove of things.

When I was 21 I got a DUI at .09. Looking back I definitely needed the DUI because I had driven many times way more fucked up than .09. I learned in my DUI class that something like 80% of first timers get another. I'm 35 and haven't and won't get another. Don't be among the bad statistic OP.

You made a mistake. Just thank whatever god you pray to that you didn't hurt (or kill) anyone. Learn from your mistake and never again be that dickbag that drives drunk.

I stopped reading before your long story. You drove drunk. End of story. You could have killed
Someone. My family etc. no forgiveness in my eyes. Inexcusable

I'm glad the four posters after the OP's bump have taken it upon themselves to remind the OP of what he did and how bad it was and to never do it again. Y'know, just in case he forgot.

Try reading the whole story. He's not exactly proud and is aware he fucked up. Dude did something bad, feels awful about it, and is definitely paying the price. It is inexcusable, but he's not making excuses.

Wish you the best, OP. Hopefully this can be the beginning of a positive change in your life.

It could be a lot worse. Chin up and do your best to make sure it never happens again. It's going to be hard but you clearly want to show that you're better than this and move on. Really great that it won't interfere with your work. You got dis.

Yikes, drunk driving in the US is some heavy shit. Here you have to do it twice to get your license suspended.
I can relate a lot to the story, except I'm very stingy, which probably doesn't help.
I've had to drive drunk a few times, but usually I try to catch a ride to not be responsible for my own car.

Don't let this get to you or get you down, use it as a lesson & point to turn your life around.

I don't usually drink much, and I don't do it often at all. And like I said, for a while now I catch a ride or ride a cab instead. I really did stop that.
In any case, only once was I really shitfaced. I was so drunk my vision was skipping, it was like playing in a laggy online match. At a least I had somebody next to me that time telling me to go slow.

You had to drive drunk? I'm honestly curious as to how you came to that conclusion.

Hmm, it's annoying to leave the car there and it's not seen as that big of a deal here, I guess? Like I said you don't get into nearly as much trouble, well, unless you actually do kill somebody.

Where is "here"? I want to steer clear of anywhere where drunk driving and putting other lives at risk isn't considered "a big deal". And I guess it's good it's not considered a big deal unless you kill someone, it's not like you significantly heighten the risk of that happening by drunk driving!

Good thing you're in total control while driving drunk then, so that's not likely to happen!

It's all fun and games until you murder somebody with your vehicle and destroy everything about them and who they were going to be and the family they were going to make and the kids they were going to have and the grandkids and so on.

Guys, lets get wasted!

I'm curious where "here" is, too. The only other specific information I have about driving drunk in other countries is an acquaintance from Germany who basically said it's not even considered there, as in, if you drink, driving isn't event a thought in your mind. Not sure how true that is.

You sound selfish, but I hope you're driving it in a very dead traffic area at the very least.

That's a pretty cheap fine. Make sure you take the VASAP class within 15 days of your conviction. Don't fuck up and drive someone else's car without the IIS system equipped. You'll be fine. Coordinate with someone or get a taxi to get to those classes.

What part of Virginia do you live in?

Make sure you keep on the straight and narrow for a while OP. They'll drop the book on you if you mess up again but if you seem to learn and don't fight the process they'll be nice.

What the f... do I read here?

You made a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes. Learn from it. Be happy you didn't hurt anyone.

If there's a second DUI, you didn't just make a mistake.

That's when you fucked up.

Make sure there's never a second DUI op.

seems like a big deal??

A day in jail and a small fine is a big deal? You have to do it twice in a year to get your license revoked. You don't have to take driving classes or anything like that. That's why I said it was a bigger deal in the US.

he other people in the jail were yelling crazy "I'm gonna rape you stuff!" and other threats at me too because I was crying and they could tell they were getting to me, luckily they moved me to a cell away from that, but then I was basically left at the edge of the hall where no guard ever walked past, so I couldn't ask if I could call my parents or when I was getting out.

Criminals are trash. What kind of a fucked up person picks on someone in that situation, or even says things like that?

It funny because ignorant gaffers with no clue what the penalties are in the USA are always complaining that they are too lenient.

Maybe move to Japan? You don't need to drive anywhere if you live even slightly close to a city; you can obviously practice your Japanese; and you can get a decent paying job teaching English while you figure out what you want to do with your life. If you have problems with depression you might need to be careful about such a big change though.

What the fuck is this post

Glad to hear that it didn't turn out worse for you Birdie, and also glad that you're taking full responsibility for your mistake. Now is the time to learn from this experience while not letting it dominate your emotions.

Ive been to jail before. I wont give the reasons why but it was only one time. Had to stay there for 3 days and 2 nights. Worst experience of my life. I never want to go back to jail.

When i got there they did my fingerprints and photos then tossed me in an empty cell for waiting. Then they came in and told me to face away and undress. So I got butt naked and they tossed me a little cloth that I had to use as underwear. It was fuckin' cold in that room.

Hours later they came and took me to my cell, on the protective ward, as I had never been to jail and had no enemies. Everyone on the top floor got to come out 3 or 4 times a day but the people on the bottom floor were given their food through a slot in the door and weren't let out. They scared me.

Anyhow, bad experience. I hope I never go to jail again. I can only imagine how prison is.

Edit - I did have to go pick up a buddy that had been pulled over and arrested for DUI.

Ninja Edit - I also had to pick him up from jail for pissing in public. Last call at the bar so we decided to leave and he just whips it out and starts pissing on the wall. Cops roll by and bust his ass.

Why do we have both a drunk driving and texting while driving defense force?

You're probably young and don't know anyone important who has had their lives ruined in a car accident. Just learn from OP's lesson and knock it off before it's too late.

As someone who was hit by a drunk driver, fuck you.

Driving while drunk or under the influence is one of dumbest things you can do. You put peoples lives in danger doing that. Thank god you did not hurt someone.

Edit: Did not notice that this was an old thread.
