A friend of mine got a DUI (blew a .08 exactly) and man was it a wakeup call for him. Between the suspended license, classes, fines, etc he probably ended up paying $10,000. One of the dumbest things you can do. I thing most people that go through it learn their lesson since it's such a big deal here.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
I hate to ask what will happen if you don't "get into the groove of things."

I just meant once I figure out exactly how the Interlock system works, what classes I need to take, etc.

I didn't mean to imply I was teetering on the edge by going back to drinking and driving. I haven't had a sip of alcohol since so I'm not dependent on it or anything.

Hmm, it's annoying to leave the car there and it's not seen as that big of a deal here, I guess? Like I said you don't get into nearly as much trouble, well, unless you actually do kill somebody.

It's "annoying" to leave the car? Are you serious right now?

Rape jokesare so funny and clever hahaha

Armchair Psychologist Alert!

Seriously OP WTF.
You're lucky no one got hurt...

It doesn't take an "Armchair Psychologist" to see that a guy who drives so drunk he feels like he's lagging, does it because it's annoying to leave his car somewhere, and isn't worried because its just a day in jail isn't exactly thinking about other people when he makes his choices. And I was referencing another poster, not the OP.

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?
When I still had my G2 (like, almost full license) at 21 I got a 24-hour suspension and my car towed because I had one beer and was honest with a cop.

For those who don't live in Ontario, when you have your G2 there's a zero tolerance for alcohol. Makes sense because it's mostly for teens who are first driving. Anyway, at 21 I had been drinking for years and thought nothing of it.

Go through a ride program, cop asks if I'd been drinking, I reply yes I had a beer with dinner. He makes me step out and blow a breathalyzer, and I blew like a .0000000001 and he takes my license, dumps the entire case of beer out on the side of the road and has my car towed. I know it's the "law" and everything but if I had simply said "No officer nothing yet" or something I'd have been totally fine. Lesson learned, never be honest with a cop
;)

Driving drunk is a terrible thing and I understand why these specific laws are in place, but what a bummer to get dinged so heavy on something so small.

Way higher insurance rates plus the monthly cost of the ignition lock will be the real kick in the nuts, but you deserve that.

Drops the soap and learns a lesson...

Really? Really?

Did you read the thread, see the dates.. read the bump?

All you all who want to berate the OP about how drinking and driving is bad.. why don't you tell him that waters wet while you're at it.

People over castigate this crime in this forum. DUIs are stupid mistakes. Be glad you didn't die or kill anyone and learn from it. Had one in 2006, never been close again. We got lucky we had a victimless lesson.

I'm glad to hear that you're picking up the pieces, OP. Honestly, that's relatively light, compared to how many DUI cases end up. Still, I'm glad that you see this as a learning experience, rather than something you can't recover from. I wish you the best.

Yikes, drunk driving in the US is some heavy shit. Here you have to do it twice to get your license suspended.
I can relate a lot to the story, except I'm very stingy, which probably doesn't help.
I've had to drive drunk a few times, but usually I try to catch a ride to not be responsible for my own car.

It's "heavy" for a reason; you're at an incredibly high risk of killing those around you. If you don't want to leave your car somewhere, try calling someone who can pick it up for you, or try to work out a deal with the owner of the bar/establishment so you can pick it up the next day. Even if you have to risk having your car towed, the penalty's far better than the alternative.

Drops the soap and learns a lesson...

Dude. Seriously. Sexual assault is never something you should joke about, let alone wish on someone. Yes, OP screwed up royally, but at this point, he seems to have learned his lesson and has become positively penitent about his actions. He's learned his lesson. There's no need to be wishing some karmic retribution onto him tenfold, let alone months after realizing that what he did was a mistake and starting to take steps forward.

Stupid mistakes that could have killed innocents

Er, no, that's not how it works. Common sense dictates that driving while drunk is a very bad thing, you don't need to get fined in order to realize it. And if you somehow didn't find that out on your own, the mandatory lessons you have to take before getting your license will let you know that, at least in my country.

And calling it a "stupid mistake" makes it sound like it's no big deal. When it comes to cars that weight tons, everything is a big deal. "Over castigating"? Don't be ridiculous.

From the way you describe things in the OP, this DUI is the very least of your concerns.
You need help.
You have some issues going on.
It might be some simple things that can be addressed , it may be something deeper but everything from deflecting blame all over the place 'the girl, the people, friends' and you have also had some very serious issues in the past.
You are at least stable with your folks and you a young, so it is a good time to slam on the breaks and maybe get someone to talk to and dig deep into some of the things really going on in the wiring.

You're right but if I am not mistaken with drunk driving accidents the victims end up dead or disfigured (like that beautiful woman who was horribly burned after a DD wreck) while the drunk usually walks away unscathed. I think that's where the extra vitriol comes from.

Yeah, you are mistaken. Unless there are some statistics that say it usually occurs it's B.S.

I'm glad the four posters after the OP's bump have taken it upon themselves to remind the OP of what he did and how bad it was and to never do it again. Y'know, just in case he forgot.
So am I. Sounds like they are very responsible people with a good grasp of laws and morals. Their reminders can only help address a series issue, so well done them.

PS: I know you were being sarcastic but I opted to take it literally because it was very true.

Is life really valued so little in your culture to where you can make a statement like this so casually? Or is it just you?

Huh? What did I say? Did I screw up again? :(
I don't get the legal system. I worked for a company where the company lawyer got a DUI and got the ability to still drive between home and work and was busted on the live on the news driving elsewhere but after all that was still able to continue driving.

I have never got a DUI but I did get a Operating While Intoxicated. Basically smoking a cigarette in my car with it on at a party for heat when it was below zero. I mean I wasn't leaving and was staying at the house that night but rules are rules.

Anyways a OWI is basically a DUI but not looking as bad on your record. All the fines, classes and everything is basically the same. Car was towed.. overnight in jail.. suspended license.. 1 year probation.. $2000 in fines.. I think I had 3 classes and 25 hours of community service.. and since at the time in Michigan I owed 1000 in driver responsibility.

All I can say man is do your punishment, learn from it and never do it again.

What you did was incredibly irresponsible. You got off pretty easy, so I hope you use this as an opportunity to turn your life around. One thing I would suggest is give up drinking, I know too many people who have destroyed their lives thanks to alcohol.

So many sanctimonious posters in this thread.

Why exactly couldn't you take a taxi? That part makes no sense to me.

Old thread but I think there should be more consideration of OPs mental state.

When you have anxiety, the right choice can seem like the wrong choice for so many reasons.

Because he wasn't thinking.

Please people, there is absolutely no excuse for not being able to get a taxi or uber ride in modern times, especially if you own a smart phone.

Before you go out next time, add the Uber app to your phone and/or the numbers of a couple local taxi services to your phone book.

Laws vary between state to state in the US, so while one state can be zero tolerance on DWIs, some are more lenient.

Or, you have a really good lawyer who can cover your ass.

You should be grateful you live in a country where they send drunken drivers to jail(even if only for a few hours).
Here in Israel they barely take your license for a month and give a measly fine, and the roads are a madhouse as a result.

A similar thing happened to my brother a few years ago (he is 24, so near your age). He would drink and drive every once in a while after parties, and he had gotten into a few accidents because of this (just with himself + tree or ditch, thankfully). Finally, he got pulled over and got a DUI. It scared him shitless because he was in jail for the night (same situation as you - they didn't allow him his phone call for several hours) and he realized that his actions had consequences. He has never driven drunk since and is really adamant about his friends not driving drunk either.

It was a really stupid thing you did driving drunk, but hopefully this can turn into a lesson and helps you turn your life around. Good luck with everything, OP. I'm glad court went better than you expected.
