I went to Fry's yesterday and they had the 80 GB Intel one for $199.99. I was actually surprised since it's cheaper than both Newegg and Amazon. I should have picked it up!
 
Fry's really needs to open up some new locations. Preferably within 10-15 minutes of my house...

Anyone see any reason not to, or do you think it will have problems working with an EarthWatts 500w only running 1 gpu, 1 hdd and an i5-750?

I just don't want to buy it and then someone says, "Oh, well if you're going to buy that card you should pay $10 more and get the one twice as good" yadda yadda.

Your PSU will run any GPU except the GTX480.
 
Was wondering if any of you knew what was going on with EFI nowadays? It was the up and coming awesome replacement for BIOS for a long time but I haven't really seen it anywhere? Is there a moniker for a brand of motherboards with this feature or is pretty much laying dead in a ditch somewhere?

Wait for the GTX 460 to be released soon and see how that adjusts prices. Hopefully the 460 i strong enough to force ATI to react by dropping prices.

What are you coming from?

Are you willing to OC your GPU, its literally as simple as moving a couple of sliders and completely reversable? If you are the 5850 or the 1GB GTX 460 may be a better option. Once those two GPUs are overclocked you won't actually lose much performance compared to a 5870, but you'll certainly save a nice stack of cash.

Your PSU is fine for any of them and honestly, all of them should run FF14 like butter, the game's capped at 30fps afterall.

The GTX 460 looks like it might be coming in right at the price:performance sweet spot, more than enough power for high end gaming and yet no need to pay an extra premium for it. It very well may be my defacto high end GPU recommendation as the 5850 was once.

Sorry, it's a 5870 for $370, it's the HIS 1GB on sale on NewEgg right now. its' going in a brand new i5-750 build I am assembling this week. I have a 4850 in my current computer, but I want to get something new for FFXIV. Should I just ride out my 4850 for a few months or is this a pretty solid deal?

I have my 4850 oc'd now. I certainly want to make a sensible purchase, but at the same time I'd hate to go with a 5850 or gtx 460 and not get the same performance in FFXIV that I could have gotten for another $100.

Of course, I didn't realize FFXIV was capped at 30fps (why the fuck?) so I guess a 5850 OC'd with my new build would probably suffice.

It overclocks like crazy, expect around 950MHz on the 1GB model. That combined with a much lower price and several games being stronger on nvidia products and you have the new gamer's champion.

It still baffles me how this is the case ever since the 4800 series from AMD launched.

Nvidia still sponsors pretty much every PC dev apart from Valve don't they?
 
I want to blind-buy that Palit 1GB 460 at $220 so bad... If the reviews are glowing i'm worried it'll just shoot up in price or go out of stock in a couple of days...

I know it's not exactly the greatest situation for ATI users but ultimately it's a good thing for the PC gaming industry as it'll force ATI to finally step up to the table and start supporting the industry that makes them who they are. Up to this point ATI's support of PC gaming has been nonexistent compared to nvidia who offer schemes to encourage game devs to push PC gaming forward and sometimes even bank rolls smaller devs' projects such as Metro 2033 which would have been a lot worse and less technically impressive without nvidia's money to back it. The unfortunate side effect is that ATI owners have to lose out as a result.

Just do it, preliminary reviews on the 768MB model are great. If on the small chance the final card isn't as impressive you could always return it. Don't you have a 7 day return period in the US or something similar?
 
Okay, so I've decided my laptop won't run anything I want to play (FFXIV) and am looking to build something for around $600. This is what I have so far, but I just want to check that everything will work together and get some opinions. I've really got no idea what I'm doing. :D

If you're buying it for FF14 you're going to want a better GPU than that. Even if you're not willing to spend more, a 4850 will net you the same performance for $50 less.

Don't get that POS PSU either.

Sounds great but may I ask why is the mobo so expensive? my budget pc has a mini board for about £25 and it works a treat, half the features on motherboards I never touch or use or are small pointless extras.

(note: my pc was made on a very tight budget :P and I got lucky with my components working well with each other)

What sort of improvements would an uber motherboard give? outside of a better onboard graphics chip and more pci-e slots? i'm interested.

I bought mine cheap as I just needed something which was not sub £20 and that could hold about 4GB ram (2x2GB) and my gtx260, so it worked out great for me.
 
Ive had my comp for about 1 1/2 years now and my back fan started making grinding noises so i had to move my front fan to the back. Do fans usually crap out in about that time or did i just have a really shitty fan? (Coolermaster)
 
Okay, my ma needs an HTPC for her tv. Needs to do 1080p/audio over HDMI and I need to be able to wireless control it (mouse? Wii pointer with Bluetooth?). I'm looking at a ~$500 budget but can go over. Is the i5 a possibility? The i7 would probably be too pricey for this kind of small build. Any suggestions?

At our school the IT department has an agreement with Microsoft where we can sell it to our students for a significant discount. We don't provide free keys to anyone, but faculty / staff can buy work at home licenses very cheap. Since I do so much work from home though they provide me with licenses.

Ok, Im about ready to hit the Buy button on amazon for an Intel X25M. I just have a few questions about what else I need in terms of getting my PC ready for it.

I backed up all of my pictures, movies, music, and game saves to an external drive. The only game saves I did not bring were those games that have steam cloud support since Ill get those back once I re-download steam. I also downloaded a bunch of installers for my commonly used programs to save me some trouble later. Is there anything I might be forgetting here?

As far as steam goes, I just need to copy the entire steamapps folder to an external drive? Do I have to do this with the backup option in steam or will a simple copy/paste do the trick?

Once the SSD is here, can I simply install Windows 7 to it using the same product key I used when I first installed back in October? I dont need to uninstall the Windows 7 that I currently have installed first or anything of that sort?

Once Windows 7 is installed, I can format my 640GB WD. Any recommendations as far as that goes?

When it comes to reinstalling Steam, Ive been told that putting games on an SSD (aside from MMOs) will give me little to no improvements. How do I go about installing Steam on a different drive? My OS will be on the SSD so thats where Program Files will be and thats where steam will want to go. Are these the instructions I need to follow to get what I want? https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?p_faqid=231

Lastly, Im not going to install a ton of programs to the SSD but was curious as to what you guys put on yours? Open Office? Photoshop? Any suggestions here will help.

Edit: Although I should probably ask what I need to look for in a PSU.

Didn't care to put a Blu-ray drive in this since I have a PS3 (and it'll be getting the 3d update in September).

I know the 980x comes in at 3.3 ghz..but I wanted to try and push it to as close to 4 ghz as possible. I know it comes with a heatsink, but I'm not sure if that'll be good enough to do what I'm asking. If not, any suggestions on some aftermarket coolers for the CPU (do not want to go the liquid route)?

Also will that PSU be enough for this system? Any additional suggestions (different mobo, ram etc ) would be appreciated.

Sleeve fans can have a short life and assorted issues, but it's still a luck of the draw sometimes. I purchased some quiet, "long-life" sleeve fans a few months ago for half off. Out of the bunch, one is already making slightly more noise than it had initially.
