Absolutely. A HDD uses around 10W on load.Gribbix said:Here's the build I'm currently set on:

Corsair TX 650 Watt ATX Power Supply
Cooler Master RC-692-KKN3 CM690 II Basic Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Cooler Master Hyper 212+
G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit
Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7,200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
Samsung 22x DVD±RW Burner
Is the 650w PSU enough if I want to add another HDD in the future? I don't intend on using multiple graphics cards.

Mine are actually rather old. 185.85 here
Yep, Microcenter deal. I'm planning to use the computer for gaming, software development, and video editing.Hazaro said:Absolutely. A HDD uses around 10W on load.
Are you getting in on a Microcenter deal? What will you be using the computer for?
I figured the extra ram would be helpful for video editing.Hazaro said:A 1055 might be another option for you. Also 4GB in dual channel is fine and will not have any real world performance impact (Unless you need 6GB for some reason).

Microcenter seems tio be one of the few places that still has a regular sale on the 212+. It was marked down to $20 a few weeks ago and I believe it's at $25 now.
edIt: MC has it back down to $20 again, online and in-store

I take it you're getting your HSF from there as well?Gribbix said:Yep, Microcenter deal.
The i7 will serve you very well for all of those. Might not have the same upgrade path as AM3 but you'll definitely get the performance out of it that you want.Gribbix said:Yep, Microcenter deal. I'm planning to use the computer for gaming, software development, and video editing.

Yep. I'm trying to pick up as many parts as I can from there since I live in CA where newegg charges sales tax.·feist· said:I take it you're getting your HSF from there as well?
Thanks a lot for helping me pick out parts. It's pretty hard to choose from such a wide variety of options.Hazaro said:The i7 will serve you very well for all of those. Might not have the same upgrade path as AM3 but you'll definitely get the performance out of it that you want.
Absolutely.grkazan12 said:Hey Hazaro thanks for all the help man, I think I'm going to go with the rig you showed me. So a GTX 460 1GB will do the trick in running most games? huh I had no idea a single video card could handle most of today's games. I thought I would need dual cards.

You want 2x2GB otherwise you'll have half the memory bandwidth. (That is bad)shigsy said:Just about to hit order on this lot and noticed the memory is a single 4GB module. Is this ok or do I need to go for 2x 2GB? Any difference at all?

That one good enough? Or should I go for a 650W to be safe?
Minsc said:Wow, amazing that a 5870 scores 700 more than a GTX 480.
Colkate said:Weird benchmark is weird, I got over 4000 on the 1080 bench with a 5770 and a i5-750.
Minsc said:Damn, now that's humiliating for a GTX 480 owner! Guess it is a crap benchmark after all.
What's really crazy is his 720p score isn't even good enough for extreme performance (8000+ score needed for that, see very bottom)! A i7 & GTX 480, and it can't even run it at the lower 720p perfectly according to the benches!
Colkate said:Oh wow, I had never seen those ratings. 8000 is pretty damn high.
I should point out that my i5 is at 4GHz, so the bench probably just scales well with CPU clock speed I imagine.
Mystery said:[]http://i50.tinypic.com/1pcldl.png[/IMG]
It's in windowed mode, so SLI gives no performance boost.
What is your CPU speed at tho? This benchmark isnt accurate at showing actual speed, mine is at 3.36ghz with hyper threading disabled (for now at least, going to order an H50 cooler soon to replace stock intel heatsink).Minsc said:Wow, amazing that a 5870 scores 700 more than a GTX 480.
Amneisac said:I was running it on high res. I don't know why the score was so low though, I'm kind of bummed. We'll see what happens after I get the gigabyte card and overclock it.
Seriously, I am not an overclocker and with the hyper 212 plus on air I'm running load temps under 65c at 3.6ghz. I don't think I'm going to go much higher because I just don't know if the gains will be worth it, but you easily be able to go to 3.2 or a little higher with no threat.

I'll be adding a heatsink & fan to the cpu regardless of my decision. Thoughts? Go with what I had before or choose Newegg's combo deal?

Looks excellent.LeoStenbuck said:I'm not sure(it's why I need advice) but I don't think OCZ are as reputable as someone like Corsair, for psu's.
I was thinking getting something like this:
i5 750
CoolerMaster Hyper 212+
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3
G.Skill 4GB (2x 2GB), PC3-12800
Corsair HX-650
460GTX 1GB
Intel X25-M 80GB
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB
Keep the AMD. You are stepping down to a dual core if you get that.OatmealMu said:Hmm. Just noticed this combo deal on Newegg.

I do have a Microcenter nearby, so I could get the processor there for a bit cheaper. May also switch to this RAM, as it looks more or less the same to me, is a bit cheaper, and is red. Also thinking about adding a 212+ cooler.
Any recommendations? Anything obviously incompatible that I'm missing? Should I wait a little while on the 5870 in case the prices go down with the new NVidia releases?
For that matter, I may come to my senses at some point and get a GTX 460 or something like that instead of the 5870. I can't believe I'm considering a freaking $400 video card. :lol
::edit::
And yes, I know there's two copies of Windows there. Have another computer I want to install Windows 7 on.
Word of caution the P183 has probably the weakest side panel tabs I have ever seen, so be careful when taking off and putting back on. They are easily breakable plastic tabs.
I was wondering the same thing. All the overclocking guides I have seen around assume you know a ton about it.RocketDarkness said:I'm sure this is asked fairly often, but I didn't see anything in the OP nor the last few pages. So uh...does anyone have a good beginner's guide to overclocking? I'd like to learn the basic concepts and tools, but I don't have any desire to go hardcore with it. Just enough to squeeze a bit of extra juice out of my PC.
