Ok soo....my idle GPU temp was 74 degrees C.....decided to take a look at my 8800GT to see if maybe dust could be hiking the temp up...lo and behold >___>

Metro Vacuum ED500 DataVac

Looks like the price went up a bit. A bit noisy, but a great buy that beats the limited angles and use time of canned air.

There are pricier, more full-featured models (additional functions, nozzles and the like) from Metro Vacuum and other companies, though the one above is solid, cheap ($40-50) and helpful for people who don't have the space, or tolerance for larger-sized compressors.

got one of those bad boys a few weeks ago. It's pretty fucking awesome and will save you tons of cash on compressed air.

Uhh you know that a leaf blower blows out old contaminated dust and an excess of carbon dioxide that can very likely severely damage your computer both short time and long term right?

Hm? You mean that's not a good idea? Sometimes i'll use two at the same time for added effect!

Damn now I'm kind of worried about buying a new GPU (6950 with flashed 6970 bios) after looking at Nvidia's GPU roadmap.

There will always be a better card just on the horizon. You won't go wrong with the 6950.

If in 1 year, you aren't satisfied with that purchase (for real, no fakies), I'll buy the card from you for $200. That's how sure I am.

So when I do my new build later this year, I'll be going with a Core i5, I think. I'd be getting Windows 7 64 bit to go with it. I'm running 32 bit on my old system here. I'll also be using this SSD as the main for that comp as well.

My question is, can I, after installing this SSD on the new comp, just do a over write with 64 bit? Is that allowed? Or will have to just do a wipe and re install every damn thing all over again.

Current system:

E8500 @ 4Ghz
4GB DDR800
Crossfire 2x4870 1gb
EP45 mobo, Corsair TX750
Couple WD HDDs

Sort of interested in Sandy Bridge maybe. Would it be a waste upgrading (probably to a 2500K+components)? Should I just wait until Ivy Bridge?

Main uses: gaming, some programming/general usage (nothing intense like encoding, video editing or the like). Thanks.

Edit: Or maybe an SSD would be a better upgrade? (Currently using a WD black for main, WD green for storage.)
Bumping to quote/ask this again if you don't mind. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

Worth upgrading the mobo/proc/RAM, and the only reason you'd want to upgrade the videocard is if you want to take advantage of DX11. Otherwise, the 48701GBx2 is doing plenty well still.

Pretty much. Unless a new GPU is coming out in three months or so that will floor your current one. There's nothing to worry about.

This is how the tech world works.

I moved from that exact same setup to a 6950. (Because of a new monitor). Otherwise, that system is still pretty decent. An SSD would be a great addition though. What resolution do you game at?

Hey guys, I utilized this thread over a year ago to help me build a new pc and it's fantastic, I also saved a shit ton of money with some price matching help.

The final piece of the puzzle for this PC though, was to crossfire my 5870 with another 5870 and it seems now that it's on the way out it's finally at an acceptable price (sub 200 $ Canadian).

The only thing is I bought a really good 650 watt power supply that I'm lead to believe by some sources is JUST enough juice to do this but by other sources that I need 700 watts(of good power).

Apparently the cpu I have (i7 860) under max load with no OC'ing uses 95 watts and 2 5870's in crossfire mode uses 376 watts at maximum power draw. 471 watts out of 650 available. Checking the power consumption for the fans in my case reveals that all of them put together at maximum speed use less then 20 watts. So even if I round up I'm barely at 500 watts total.

Is there anything else that would push more more then another 50 watts? I don't really plan to overclock at all , seems like a bit of a hassle for minimal gain (although I do have breathing room temperature wise).

So basically, can I safely do 2X5870 crossfire without worrying about overloading the power supply ? It was a corsair XT 650watt or something along those lines.

That's cutting it close, remember a PSU doesn't put out the whole rated wattage. An 80 Plus means it puts out at least 80% of the rating. You could always try it out, but this article says you need a 700W PSU. Your HDDs, mobo, and optical drive also pull power.

1920x1200, whoops forgot to mention that.

How was the transition?

Well I did a bit more research and according to ATI's official requirements as long as I have 40 amps available and 600 watts for the system I should be good.

Hilariously though, the 650tx has only 2 6 pin connectors and so the solution is to use the 2X4pin to 1X6 pin, which the 5870(xfx) that I have comes with. The funny part is the instructions tell you not to use it :p

I think I'll try my luck and report back.

I installed my fixed replacement Asus P8P67 Deluxe and noticed a few things right away.

1) It came with latest 1305 bios. No double post issue.
2) CPU wasn't downclocking to 1.6GHz while idling and voltage was staying at 1.34V. Seems Speedstep settings, C1, C3, C6 and so on, were all set to auto => off. Had to manually set them to enable.
3) My settings, offset, CPU PLL and etc., for overclocking 4.5GHz @ 1.27V are not giving them the same result. For example, I tried using a higher offset, but the CPU voltage is showing less then before. Thus, I am going to have to play around and test once again.

Transition was pretty good.

I was on a single 4870 1GB for a while, and no way that would let me game at 2560x1600

I got a second 4870 1GB and tried newer games on that but had lots of issues with my crossfire setup. (Didn't work in some games, micro stuttering in others).

Sold both and bought a 6950 2GB. Works very well. Now might be a good time for you to jump, though. I sold both the 4870 1GBs on ebay for 210$. And a new 6950 is about 250$. (I paid 300$ though. Should have waited for a week or so. :( )

All that said, an SSD would be the largest change you would see in your system. (ignoring games. Not much of a performance jump in games).

Actually not quite. PSUs are supposed to put out their raiting. An 80% Bronze PSU is just going to be taking 1/0.8 times more current from the wall. That being said, a lot of PSUs don't put out their supposed rating because they're cheaply made. However, a Corsair 650TX will put out 650W (while taking >650W from the wall). Running a PSU at full load will stress it more though, for sure.

I recently purchased a new mobo, proc, case, and memory. I am planning on transferring over my hard drives, cd drive, psu, and gpu over to the new setup. I am currently running windows 7 64 bit on the drives that are being transferred over.

Should I expect any problems with the OS functioning when switching the underlying hardware? If so, should I just do a reformat when I make the switch?

Reformat. Windows sees a new motherboard as a new PC altogether. It might boot up, but it will probably be unstable due to driver issues, and you might run into activation issues.

I have a Dell with an OEM version of win7, is it possible to switch MBs or would that invalidate the the OEM install. If I find the key could I just reuse it with a different MB?

Yes, you can reuse the OEM Win7. With a new board you'll simply have to activate it within a set period of time. You can either activate online, or via a fairly quick phone call.

Damn why the hell are the 2TB Drive Western Digital Black drives so expensive? I was planning on buying one for the server I ordered. What happened to just the regular caviar line of Drives? From what I hear the green drives suck ass.

WD Blacks have 2 heads and processors reading off multiples platters in parallel. In other words: not worth it for a file server. WD Blacks in general are just not worth it anymore. You get nearly equal performance and less noise in a Samsung drive, and if you're going for maximum performance in an OS drive, you should be going SSD anyways.

Out of all the drives I've had, Western Digital's have had the best rate at not failing. I'm just pissed there isn't a normal drive option.

Any idea if the Mini Arc will be released on newegg?

I want that case soooo bad.
The Arc, Arc Mini, and Define Mini are scheduled to hit Newegg around the first or second week of April, if not sooner. Not sure if that also applies to their newer Core 3000 and Core 1000 cases, though.

Nice. I love my R2 but it is a bit small, but it's workable. That case is perfect if it can fit my huge ass HX-1000 psu.

In regard to overclocking:

I use EVGA precision for oc'ing the GPU, nHancer for things like forcing AA in SCII, and SpeedFan to control the fan and monitor temps?

What do I use to oc the CPU, and are there general settings that I should use as a starting point?

I have a 2500K and a 560 for reference.
