Hey guys, I put together a build using the charts in the OP. Wondering if there is anything glaring I should be aware of that jumps out regarding compatibility. Using this to upgrade/replace my ailing gaming computer (still using the good old 8800 GT)

I'm pretty noob regarding all this, but it seems relatively straight forward. I posted a few months back with something similar, but never pulled the trigger on the order. This time I am poised to do so! POISED.

Whats your actual budget?

Hell of a deal if you've got the cash. Would've jumped on this with the 780 had I not been building my own.

So weird, stuff I bought Friday will be here tomorrow

Newegg's shipping priorities are weird. I have a case that's under 5-6 day shipping coming in now before the rest of the parts in said order which qualified for the shoprunner free 2 day shipping.

Shit. Did I really need to buy a full tower? This damn Phantom NZXT is a huge bitch.

I got scared my motherboard (Asus Z87) wouldn't fit which is why I overlooked mid towers. I also didn't realize most standard desktops are mid towers. To reiterate, this is what I'm putting in the thing:

According to PCPP the motherboard should fit, but can anyone here confirm that?

And what the fuck am I gonna use these FIVE DRIVE BAYS for?!

Oh well. A case this big should get me better airflow and thus a cooler system right?
lol, full towers are supreme overkill. Mid towers are nice, and you can go smaller.

Any case that doesn't say mATX only (smaller) pretty much supports ATX motherboards. It's a standard size, don't worry.
Cooling will be slightly better.

Let me know when you install the OS on your new PC. I'm sure you're right that creating the bootable DVD or flashdrive the way you did, on a separate PC will work fine but there just isn't much information out there about using the student version on a new PC with no OS and I need to be 100% sure before I tell my friend to pull the trigger on the deal.

You can PM PatzCU and ask him about it (he's the friend who did it) or if you can wait a few days I should have all my stuff wednesday or thursday

Putting together a shopping list for a neigbour's daughter. She really wants if for the Sims, but wants it future proofed. She is into shooters on consoles and there is a good change in the next while she'll have buy games from Origin. So I''d like it decent for games. Restricted to a bricks and mortar store here in the city:

Antec VSK-3000E
Intel Core i5-3350P - 3.1GHz - Socket 1155
Asrock B75 Pro3 - Socket 1155 - ATX
Kingston HyperX Blu 8GB - PC3-12800 - DIMM
Western Digital Blue - 1TB
Cooler Master B500 - 500 Watt

List of GPUS available within budget:

MSI GeForce N650-1GD5/OCV1 - 1GB - PCI-E
ASUS GeForce GTX650TI-PH-1GD5 - 1GB - PCI-E
MSI GeForce N650Ti PE 1GD5/OC - 1GB - PCI-E

I might be able to push them to this if the above all all shite:
ASUS Radeon R7260X-DC2OC-2GD5 - 2GB - PCI-E

Comments/feedback welcome, I haven't put together a new pc in years. Noise might be a factor.

Hello people, I am a complete beginner to PC Gaming, I'd appreciate it if somebody could take a look at this build - based off the OP spreadsheets - and tell me if it's a good build for £800 or if I've made any glaring mistakes. (I'll be looking to pick up an SSD sometime in the future, but for now I just want to keep the price around £800 and get it built.)

Thanks in advance.

I'd change the 7950 away from that horrible reference designed one. Something like a 760 or if you're feeling mad the 280X Toxic at £240 isn't bad. A 760 will be around £200

Going for a 760 might allow you to squeeze in a 120GB SSD.

Edit - I forgot the PSU, drop the 280X for a 760 and then grab that XFX one.

Probably can get a cheaper PSU and get a better monitor (IPS).

That XFX PSU was fine value, the Corsair is shite.

So I have just recently built a pc and I got a Sapphire 7970 oc with boost graphics card. I like it so far but I'm wanting to get another one, problem being is Newegg, Amazon, and NCIX are all sold out. With the R9 280x being a rebranded 7970 does that mean the 3rd party manufacturers like Sapphire are discontinuing the 7970s. Being new to gaf I figured maybe one of you could shed some light on these new gen graphics cards cycles. I know I can just crossfire with a 280x but I would rather match them.

My current system is the following:

i5-3570
8GB DDR3 (2x4GB Corsair XMS3 @ 1333)
Sapphire 7870XT 2GB (Core @ 1100MHz)
OCZ ZS 750W PSU

I'm tempted by the R9 290 when non-reference ones start appearing but I'm a little concerned about the power draw of the 290 not because I don't think my PSU can handle it but I honestly think it will affect the households electricity bill. Is this just me being paranoid?

My 7870XT is holding up fine for now (more is always better though)...should I wait until 20nm cards start appearing? I assume they'll be more efficient when it comes to performance/power draw...is this true?

They did briefly a while back, but since then prices have mainly rocketed up above 280X levels.

Your PSU will be fine for a 290. If you had a 3570K you would even have enough headroom to overclock too.

My own opinion would be though is if you're happy with what your card is giving you then I'd hold off and don't upgrade for upgradings sake.

The difference between the 770 and 780 isn't that great. However, a 780 TI is a huge step up. Also, the 770 is faster than a 680. I believe that there is a 1000mhz difference on clock.

Screenshot from 2013-12-03 13:07:52.png

Waaaay off. The GDDR is faster, but you're looking an a measly 40Mhz clock speed increase.

So anyone have issues with the Z87X-UD3H USB3 ports cutting out/losing connectivity? Additionally, my external drive isn't even showing up in Windows. Keyboard drops in and out at random times...

Updated the BIOS and drivers. Very annoying as I've never had an issue with Gigabyte boards.

The first one isn't a Ti model, so probably want to pick between the other two. The Power Edition OC version should be pretty good as that's one of their premium lines of cards. The ASUS one is surely going to be fine, as well.

Go with either of those two. Whatever is cheaper, or if the same price, the MSI.

Should run The Sims 3 just fine.

The are pretty much the same price and she will probably upgrade it in a year or two. She wants it for the Sim 4 as well, but from what I've read they are targeting low-end machines with Sims 4 so I'd say it will handle it.

Thanks for the feedback.

EDIT: Specs for the card says: 18.89dB under full load. That's pretty good? I'm worrid about this thing being a hover since it is a stock heatsink fan on the i5

here is what I got so far, kinda sad all the video cards were gone by the time I got started last night. This is a build for my son and something we are working on together:

Fractal Design Define R4
Intel Core i5-4670K
Western Digital WD Blue WD10EZEX 1TB
SeaSonic G Series SSR-550RM 550W

I tried to grab some of the deals while I could and I will fill in with memory, CPU cooler, video card, and motherboard.

With the 550W power supply, what is the top end video card I can run? This is a gaming system but want to futureproof it a bit

That PSU can run any single GPU. Where in the world are you buying from? What's your budget?

Get one of the 650 Ti's. If you can (and it can be worked into your budget) a 650 Ti Boost or a 7850 will offer better performance and value for money.

PSU is a bit overkill and you don't want a reference 760. There is this build for Haswell and all it's needing is a CPU cooler but you could grab one of those down the line as I've already taken you over budget

Bought most of it from NewEgg, my budget is 1000 and I have since added the bolded parts:

Fractal Design Define R4
Intel Core i5-4670K
Western Digital WD Blue WD10EZEX 1TB
SeaSonic G Series SSR-550RM 550W

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-UD4H - Purely a color choice
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 120GB

I have spent about $750 in total so far, and just need to add a video card to this build

Got in the parts I ordered last week and of course oddly enough the case. Pissed that the order with the mobo is still in packaging, hopefully it gets here by thursday-ish. Newegg shipping is so silly.

Hey kharma, best place for beta Gigabyte (Z87X-UD3H) bios? I'm browsing a site "TweakTown"...Seems like a lot of people downloading from there.

I just realized I've never used an 8GB RAM computer before. For the last six years I've been living off of 3GB. What's it like? Is it gonna be on some Whole New World type shit?

Edit: And I'm upgrading from Vista 32bit to Win 7 64. I've never even extensively used Windows 7 before. How much of an improvement is it?

It's more or less exactly the same with contemporary programs. You'd notice it more with video or photo editing, I imagine. Games are only now starting to take advantage of it.

On the other hand, you can have like 100+ porn videos open at once.

If you're upgrading I'd just go to 8.1 at this stage.

Damn, Prime95 + crash almost immediately at x44 , 1.25v per the OP guide...Hope I don't have a dog CPU.

4.2GHz is about what to expect with Haswell, anything beyond that is a bonus.

So, I just learned my Astro Gaming mixamp for my A30 are broken and they can't fix them. So, I am looking into solutions. I really don't need wireless gaming headset anymore so any wired one will work.

I would use this for PC gaming that won't be played on the tv such as Dota 2 (mainly this) or skyrim or multiplayer Fps.

Money really isn't a big issue since I have a lot of amazon giftcards but I am not looking to get something amazing when the money isn't worth the performance.

I saw the headsets in the original post. How are the Sennheiser PC 363D since they seem to be the ones to go for. Anyone use them and are they worth the money?

How are SteelSeries Siberia v2?

Anything else I should be considering?

Well it would be good to know your price ceiling.

I also am going to start off by recommending you get a headphone and separate mic.

Do you have a preference to open cans or closed

I would rather be below $250, but it isn't a hard limit.

only have tried open but I wouldn't be against closed.

why the separate Mic and headset? I did that before and my Salman clipon Mic was a pain in the butt to deal with.

Sennheiser 363Ds do have a USB DAC to enable Dolby Headphone. They're audiophile quality cans, but the big selling point is the sennheiser mic. So crystal, so beautiful.

Really, headphone suggestions are all about what you have to drive them. If you're rocking onboard sound, something like the 363Ds are good because of the included USB DAC. Getting audiophile headphones like the AKG Q701s, AD700s, or Beyer DT880s, you really want a quality soundcard or good DAC/amp solution.

*edit*

To answer your above question about the Mic, the Zalman was a piece of crap. However, the ModMic is pretty good. It's a tad below the Sennheiser quality, but still better than any of those crappy USB mics like the Blue Yeti.
