I'm about to RMA my 7970. Thinking about upgrading to a 290, is it worthwhile? I hear it runs hot and is noisy, I have no intentions of overclocking so will it be an issue?
Is there an aftermarket cooler I can run? I know everyone says to wait for the non-ref cards but I kind of need to pick up a card today.

It is both hot and noisy. IMO, just wait for an ASUS Direct CUII one.

There was a very very brief period where a few listed and sold for $700.

Wow, some people do not know the value of things they buy.

The best I have seen for the same card as I have (but is new) is $578.16 AUD (on ebay), that is $178.16 more than I paid for mine a few months back (and he has even sold 3 out of 10)!

So why are bitcoins making them so expensive?

Probably because they are much faster at mining compared to nvidia's offerings (a 7970 I believe is like 2 or more times faster than a 780/titan nvidia equivalent gpu), but I don't do bitcoins so I'm not sure. Isn't it near impossible to make a profit nowadays with bitcoins because of the high difficulty?

You may be able to depending on investment on right ASIC miners.

All AMD cards are crazy priced right now because of mining. There is also a 7950 listed for $440. Good time to sell a gpu and jump ship to nvidia. Some people are selling 7970s for enough to pay for a 780.

I really regret not pulling the trigger on a 7950 before black friday.

So, what's my hd7850 worth?

One last question before I order all this: What's the best large monitor I can do for under $100? I need something big, clear and easy to read. This isn't for gaming or videos or anything.

Just get the biggest monitor you can find in your budget (but make sure that it doesn't have an insanely low resolution). Anything under 100 isn't going to be great.

Quick question guys... if I were to buy 3 monitors, how would I go about connecting them all to a single GPU?

Looking at upgrading to a GTX 770 (4GB) soon which have 2 DVI ports, HDMI and a DisplayPort.

placed an r9-290 order from provantage when they were in stock over the weekend and now i have a "Your order has been passed to a specialist for special attention." as my status. Pretty much means I'm going to get backordered. FUck me.

2 backordered r9-290s for me! Yay.

edit: as soon as I post this i get this email:

Hello.
We have received your recent order. Although the item showed in stock on our website, the stock was depleted when your order processed. The estimated lead time from our vendor for more stock is 2-3 weeks. I am very sorry for this inconvenience. We will place this order on backorder for you. This is really making me want to sell my 7970. Got it on Black Friday for $200...

Just do it! Sell it! The bitcoin craze wont last past these 2 weeks imo.
The 7970 is awesome with some overclocking but i would just get a 780Ti or 290 (flashed to 290x) ftw!

I love the irony that the more miners there are, the less there is for everyone else and the higher the difficulty factor of mining rises. Also, I wonder how many bitcoins are left because those that are trying to flip their video cards better to do it quick.

I just got 2 new sticks of 4GB RAM for a total of 8GB.
I already have 2x 2GB RAM in my pc right now.

All are from Kingston, DDR3 1333mhz, same voltage.

Can I combine them so I have 12GB in total or iwould it be better to take out my old ram and just replace them with my new sticks?

edit: And is it true that I have to put them in this order then: 2GB, 4GB, 2GB, 4GB?

Hey Guys-

Need some help with a Christmas gift to myself. I want to upgrade my monitor. Looking to move to a dual screen setup -- my budget is around $700.

I've seen the recommended monitors -- but I'm not sure if they right for me. Specs posted below. Thanks for help and I respect this community's opinion.

Specs:
Intel Core i7-3820 CPU @ 3.60GHz
8GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 4GB

You would get 12 gig yes. And follow what the motherboard manual tells you to do. It is likely in alternating pairs, but some motherboards like them next together.

Get a QNIX and an ASUS VG248QE. Best of both worlds.

I need a little help with a power supply. Would a quality Corsair 500W be okay for this?

  • Core i3-3220 (stock cooler)
  • GTX 770
  • 8GB DDR3 RAM (4GB x 2)
  • 7200RPM HDD x 2
  • No optical drive
  • 120mm intake fan
  • 80mm exhaust fan

I've tried a few different online calculators and they all say it's fine, but I wanted to get some human input.

Yes, it would be fine. A Quality 500W will run any single cpu single gpu setup.

Just make sure it's not a Corsair CX/Builder. You can do better for the same money.

Do you guys think the GTX 780 or Titan can handle Witcher 3 on Ultra @1080p + 60fps (or close to 60fps)?

When do you guys think these high end cards will become outdated until it can't handle 1080p ultra with30-60fps?

Seeing as the game is not close to release I'll go with a maybe. :p

It will always depend on how much the devs are pushing the ultra settings, some games have insane amount of effects that no person really needs and only people with dual card setups could get high framerates with. So yeah, maybe.

Cards don't go old over night. There are plenty of people still rocking 580s and weaker and are happy with it. There will be a setting that can run that game at 60.

So I'm tired of my big Antec 900 case that my tiny Gene-IV mATX board is in. I really like the Bitfenix Prodigy M and was all set to get it but the Phenom M looks cool too. I wish the white model had the front vented like the black (prodigy) but I was thinking the Prodigy might be better for air flow since it sits on the Mac Pro/G5 legs whereas with the Phenom it only has teeny feet?

edit: also... NCIX is always flogging 660 (non TI versions) for ~$150 lately. Is that a decent upgrade from a 460? I know a 760 would be better but they touch the $250-300 which is too much for me. I got the 460 a few years back for $150 and it's done me okay until recently.

It would make absolutely no difference to air flow. Get what you like the look of more (and check out the replacement fronts on bitfenix.com. There might be one that you could swap in)

Phenom M has plenty of airflow. It intakes through the floor, and it has plenty of clearance.

No way to answer any of your questions. It's all speculation that would be founded on very little.

I just meant since it intakes/exhausts from the bottom of the case provided you don't load up drives down there.

Cool. Thanks to both you guys. Guess it comes down to which one I like (which is both).

As long as you're not putting it on a carpet, it won't be starved for air.

My wife got me the CX500 for Christmas. I have not installed it yet. It's highly rated on Amazon and NewEgg. What would be wrong with it?

High DOA rate, high failure rate, cheaper manufacture than other Corsairs, better power supplies available for the same money. You'll probably be fine.

Don't ever trust reviews on sites that you buy things (new egg, amazon, etc). Only use legit review sites for info.
