I normally browse GAF without avatars. Never noticed yours before. Same zero five zero that used to play Soldier of Fortune 2 competitively? (Yeah. Way back when)
The very same.

Kev, Kudos(chop), and Jihad4Jesus/Przn are the only remaining from those days.

I missed out on most of SoF 2, as it was my first year in college. Drugs and sex seemed more important.

Damn. Yeah. I remember you guys. Small internet. I played on a team Apostles of Insanity. We weren't nearly on the zfz level in that game but did our best (zfz was pretty untouchable). I was an admin on Teamwarfare for sof2 and later did web Dev for them.

Sorry for the off topic!

Nvidia good. SSD is the hotness, etc.

It's crazy how connected most of the communities of competitive FPS are. IRC + low population led to the same folks playing a lot of the same games.

Can you imagine going on to IRC for pickup games in this day and age? How far we've come.

Oh yeah, and buy Intel folks.

Quick monitor question, is there much of a difference between these two?:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GTV05XG/?tag=neogaf0e-20 (Dell U2414H)

and

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005JN9310/?tag=neogaf0e-20 (Dell U2412M)
One thing to consider is that the U2412M is a couple of years older and uses a cheaper e-IPS panel, vs the AH-IPS panel found in the U2414H. The U2412M also has slightly higher input lag at around 10ms, compared to 4ms on the U2414H, although the U2414H is basically the absolute best IPS panel around in that respect and the U2412M's number isn't too bad taken in isolation. It's also worth noting that the U2412M doesn't have an HDMI port, although it does have VGA and DVI ports, whereas the U2414H only has a couple of HDMI ports, a DisplayPort and a Mini DisplayPort.

Last off topic post from me
don't ban pls

It is incredible how far competitive gaming has come. I remember it was awesome to have my matches shout casted. It would have been game changing to have the actual game streamed like is so prevelant today. This is like the golden age of competitive gaming. The stuff we did back in those days is like playing with sticks and cans in comparison.

And yeah. Those communities just migrated from game to game. Call of duty, CS source, etc. Same guys over and over. Played with them for years.

Definitely small world. I don't know if you're familiar with United 5 from CoD days, but most the dudes from that team are all still pals, we do LANs a couple times a year :P

I went to highschool with Kudos and Genstyle, Crzg and Envy just happened to live in state too.

The idea that we used to have to travel around the country for some hardware winnings or a $3000 prize pool as a big deal, when TI4 just happened, is so crazy to me. I can't imagine being able to pretty much retire and do what you want after winning a tourney. Kids these days.

Yeah, that sounds horrible. Has to be some sort of hardware issue. I might start the RMA process, as painful as that is.

I just went to NCIX yesterday to get my motherboard replaced because it was dead, the looks I'll get if I also RMA my GPU :lol

Hey guys, I recently completed building my first computer and was curious about video card upgrading. I currently have this:

600w evga psu, bronze rated 80
ASROCK Z97 Mb
i5 3670k @ 4.2 ghz OC
8 GB generic ram from previous computer
Evga Nvidia 750ti superclock edition 2 GB
Arctic Freezer 7 pro heatsink
1 tb hard drive
1 dvd/cddrive
3 case fans

I'm looking to upgrade to a Nvidia 770 or AMD 290 in the Winter, or wait until the 800 lineup is announced. Hypothetically, adding all my components together with those cards led to about a 510w power draw at full load according to the Extreme psu calculator. Both these cards have 600w as a minimum for installation. Would I be safe upgrading without buying a new psu until I can purchase a new one? I'm not planning on running SLI and only want support from a single 1080p monitor. Thanks guys! My specific psu is this one:

So I'm building a PC for a friend and am wondering what's the best motherboard to pair with a i5 4690k from microcenter? Budget doesn't matter for him.

I've been looking at the Asus Sabertooth or Maximus VII Hero

If budget doesn't matter why not get the 4790k instead of the 4690k?

I assume you have a different processor? Maybe a 4670K? The 3570K was socket 1155 and would not work in a z97 motherboard.

That PSU will run a high end card no problem.

Get this: http://www.microcenter.com/product/432991/GA-Z97X-UD3H_LGA_1150_ATX_Intel_Motherboard

and a decent soundcard if they have nice headphones.

More expensive motherboards are pretty much about SLI/Crossfire support (as in, more than 2-way), and hyper specific features that most people don't use. In reality, it's almost all about aesthetics.

Sadly I don't play with any of those guys anymore. Awesome you kept in touch with the team.

You're telling me about the money. I used to just be happy with some small accolades. Making an invite league or winning a computer part or something. If only in was still in college with league of legends. I think it'd be a wildly different situation for me ha.

Kids today have it made.

Oh and Asus monitors are the way to go. On topic!

Genuinely need some help now, after trying to buy a v2 xl2411z from ccl online, and being sent a v1, I was able to refuse the item when it was delivered and get a full refund.

Now I have received what was meant to be a guaranteed v2 from novatech but it's a v1 aswell. This was after asking staff for a v2.

This is just fucking crazy. Can anyone please just recommend a decent monitor with blur reduction which I can get from the UK. It seems basically checking a monitor firmware before shipping it out is beyond the abilities of retailers in England so the simplest options would be most gratified. I've had enough and just want a nice gaming monitor. No firmware issues or anything like that if possible.

Hey ya'll, I'm running a gtx 680/i5 3570k in my setup. Was thinking about getting a 120hz/144hz monitor to see what the fuss is about. I play a wide variety of games, but I do like to pump the graphics up all the way usually. Is this is a good idea considering I'm prob not gonna be hitting 120 fps in most high-intensive games I play? Like am I gonna have stuttering issues?

Basically, if I couldn't hit 120, would I be able to set the monitor to 60 for some games for vsync reasons?

Anyone have any recommendations for a wifi extender? my main PC is in my basement with my router being two floors above and recently I've been having issues in my multiplayer games. Someone told me one would help. :P

Thank you for the help with the router everyone. I decided to go with the Asus N66U again.

Now I will do some research on something to put my setup on top of so it isn't on carpet.

I use a piece of glass from an old desk. It looks way better than a board. You can get one cut for cheap at a glass shop in your town.

I was worried about my feet making static but it seems like that won't be an issue. I hadn't thought of glass before. May still go with a large board so I can put Surge protector, Tower, Modem, Router, External drive all ontop of the same unit though. With glass I am getting mental pictures of breaking it one day.

Back in the day I had one of the huge clear plastic slabs on the floor. Now I prefer a dining room style chair so I don't need something that big to roll an office chair on.

Wow, yes that's what I have. The newest Haswell model. Sorry I spaced the specific number. Excellent! Thanks for the response. Seeing some people recommend boosting to at least an 800w on other forums worried me. Now I can put the extra money towards the card and upgrade the psu if I decide to expand further.

My PC knowledge and building skills are novice at best, so I had a few questions for ComputerGAF before diving into things like required parts. Apologies in advance for the basic questions.

I'd like to make an emulation machine built exclusively for running my library of old games (looking at PCSX2 as a standard since it would probably be the most tasking), but I'd also like to make it run as quiet as possible, comparable to at least current consoles running games off the HDD. Is it realistic to build a PC capable of running something like PCSX2 with all the bells-and-whistles (60fps, custom shaders, 6x resolution, etc), and also keep it incredibly quiet?

Of course. Fill out the questionnaire in the OP with your budget and we can suggest a build. :)

The answers in my questionnaire are a bit weak but hopefully provide enough information to help build a blueprint. Thanks!

[Basic Desktop Questions]
  • Your Current Specs: Building from scratch!
  • Budget: $1000 (would prefer to go lower but I can be flexible) / Canada
  • Main Use: 5 (Exclusively): Emulation (PS2/Wii)
  • Monitor Resolution: 1080x1920 (Sony Bravia). No plans to upgrade later (unless recommended specifically). Not buying a new monitor.
  • List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: PCSX2 (scaling, custom shaders, etc). Dolphin (same). 60FPS. PhysX (not important) / Super Sampling (moderately important) / CUDA (not important)
  • Looking to reuse any parts?: No.
  • When will you build?: Preferably within the month, but flexible. No deadline.
  • Will you be overclocking?: No (I see overclocking yields some gains, but I'm hoping to find parts good enough that overclocking won't be needed).

Some (possibly outdated) recommended specs taken from the PCSX2 thread.
  • PC - recommended specs - OS: Windows Vista or 7 | CPU: dual core at 3.2 GHz | GPU: nVidia 8800 GT, ATI HD 2/3000 series | RAM: 2GB | DVD drive

Almond is the only one I've used that actually works. I suggest trying Powerline first though.
Looking at the motherboards in the OP, is there any particular reason for picking up the ASRock Extreme3 over the Pro3?
2x PCIx16 slots and better power delivery.

'Great' build with a bump to PSU and GPU and Mobo to 1K.

EVGA is replacing my dead 580 with a 760. Now to decide if it is worth getting a 4GB 760 to pair with it, or stick with my PS4.

'Great' build with a bump to PSU and GPU and Mobo to 1K.

I've heard that PCSX2 relies mostly on CPU (and to a lesser extent GPU), any reason for recommending the bumps to PSU and Mobo over CPU? Since I don't have a wealth of knowledge on PC's I don't know what the increase to power-supply and motherboards accomplish.

Better motherboard/PSU will equal a more stable and reliable system most likely.

The 4690K will tear through PCSX2 and Dolphin, espeically if you overclock it. No need for an i7 tbh.

Is anyone up to date on monitor tech?

I've been eyeing getting a 120hz TN or something for a while but idealy I want to wait for a 1440p IPS 120hz. Are these still years away?

So it's almost only for emulation then? No other gaming?

As suggested I've been watching a few assembly videos and everything's making a lot more sense now. Mono, here's my (very slightly) updated parts list as it stands:

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Bumhat/saved/gF3gXL

I spoke to a good friend of mine who's also an editor and he recommended getting a different motherboard if only to get a few extra sata ports - his system includes a lot of internal drives for things like media backup and a RAID-0 setup for editing/AfterEffects projects and files. To this end I've found a compatible motherboard with solid ratings that gives me 6 sata ports and only costs £20 more - what do you guys think?

The only thing I think I'm interested in possibly changing now is the graphics card. The one you chose yesterday has had pretty solid reviews, but I've got about £50 to play around with so if there's anything even marginally better it could be a good investment. Or, do you think it'll do just fine for the next couple of years? Could that extra little bit of money be put towards a different case?

Please continue to give me excellent advice GAF!

Looks good, could step up to a GTX 770 or R9 280X.

Sure, how about this:

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Bumhat/saved/gF3gXL

I'm starting to think this might be my system, which is making me worryingly excited given I'll be spending nearly £1000 - geez!

Does anyone have any suggestions whatsoever regarding this build? I'm open to advice or hearing about any practical experience people have with these parts. I've chosen a slightly beefier graphics card and motherboard than in Mono's original list, and those coupled with the i7 and room to upgrade to 32GB of RAM somewhere down the line mean I'm confident this is a fairly future-proof machine (for a few years at least).

Your thoughts?

A 2GB GPU is a dead end...

You really should be looking for a 4GB card now...stuff like GTA V & Witcher 3 will almost certainly need it.

Can you recommend anything that costs up to about £250 or is that a bit of a tall order? I'm trying to keep the total budget at around £1000. Any suggestions welcome!

If I were you, I'd drop down to 8GB of RAM and use the money saved to go towards a 4GB 770.

You only need more than 8GB for productivity stuff, and even then only if you do it at a professional level.

He said he was gonna use it for work and After Effects, that's why the 16GB/i7 is there.

Going for a 4GB 770 makes literally no sense when you can get an R9 290 for the same price. Maybe it's just me but I'd always recommend going for something cheaper (i.e GTX 760) and upgrading sooner, or going for something like an R9 290 and just stumping up the cash. The 770 is kind of in the middle and already represents poorer value, and the 4GB version is even worse in that regard.

Bumhat, if you're strict on £250 and want to use that money now, take a look at an R9 280X, or consider going pre-owned. Certain GPU manufacturers like Gigabyte and MSI carry the warranty between owners, so it's pretty safe.

I know I'm really not doing a lot of thinking for myself here, but: what card would you recommend here given I'm hoping to have this system for at least a couple of years before thinking about changing parts? Is it worth me going a little over budget for a more expensive card, or are the advantages at this point kinda moot?

EDIT: Oh, you updated your post, my bad! I'll take a peak at the 280X but do you reckon I should just save that money for the moment and see how I get on with the GTX 770? For all I know I could be perfectly happy running the games/software I intend to for a couple of years with that card, and by the time I want to upgrade it'll probably be a lot cheaper to get something better. This is tricky! :/

Are there any current games that you own and want to play?

Because if you're just looking to play last-gen games pretty much anything mid-range will be great.

Are there any current games that you own and want to play?

Well see, this is the thing - I'm only just getting back into PC gaming and given how old the games I currently own are I'm not entirely sure how much I need a complete behemoth of a system when the parts I have listed already make an impressive system in itself. I definitely want to pick up some new games but I'm hoping to use the system largely for editing and visual effects work and I'm not convinced I actually need a better graphics card just yet.

Thanks for all your help with this Mono, I think I'm really starting to get into your way of thinking about it in that this system gives me a good amount of leeway to upgrade certain parts in the next few years, but for the moment it should be more than capable of doing what I need. If I want to get more RAM or upgrade the graphics card, I'll probably think about doing that later down the line rather than getting beefier stuff now when I'm actually not sure I'll need it. Upgrading later will also help lessen the blow of spending £1000 in one massive lump sum!

Sound good to you?

The 770 is more expensive than the 280X, and really doesn't make sense as it's successor the 870 is rumored to have 780 level performance.

So maybe something like this instead?:

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-video-card-gvr928xoc3gd

That would replace the 770 and make the total cost about £970 which is still under budget. Does that sound ok? Sorry about the constant hand-holding I require here, but I haven't used any of this hardware and my current PC is absolutely ancient, so I'm entirely dependent on internet reviews and advice!

Reading this topic has made me long for the days when I had a gaming PC (which I sort of stupidly sold). Might have to save up money for a new one come Witcher 3.

That, or if you want Nvidia I'd suggest waiting for the 800 series. It's supposedly so close to launch that buying a 700 series Nvidia now just doesn't seem reasonable. You'll get more performance per cost with AMD, though. They even have a decent DVR feature now.

I have no real preference between AMD or Nvidia, I always used to have Nvidia cards but there was no particular reason for this. Is there a clear difference between the two, and are there any reasons I might want to pick one manufacturer over another?
