My friend wore one of these when helping me build and eventually cleaning my PC.

What would you guys recommend as a good router to go with my PC? Sick of my current one because it has a problem with DNS servers and I have to manually input IPs on my devices to fix the problem. Dual band is probably good. Looking for something around $100-$130. Would like to have a solid mature router that doesn't have many known problems, has a fairly strong signal up to 80-100ft, can handle multiple wireless devices at once using bandwidth and one that doesn't lose a ton of speed doing so. My current one is awful because just a few hours on it drops my speeds to 5mbps and I have to reset it just to get back up to 35mbps down speeds.

Probably not the best place to post this but I figured you guys might know a bit. Would appreciate any input.

Looking at this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006QB1RPY/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Anyone ever use that one? Looks to fit most of my needs.

What PowerSupply / Watt would you guys recommend with this build, along with a ASUS 24X DVD Burner and NZXT Source 210 S210-001 Black SECC Steel, ABS Plastic ATX Mid Tower

I use this http://coolermaster.outervision.com/ and it said 312w. Also called a local Computer store and technician said at least 650.

15014673575_b99331d920_c.jpg

With that GPU I'm pretty sure you'd be more than fine with like 500w or less. Depends if you plan on upgrading in the future though I suppose. 650w would be a good mark for upper end GPUs.

What's your take on this build?

Anything you think I need to replace to improve the build while keeping/cheapening (lol) within the price range? My plan is to OC the CPU, I'm still not sure if water or air cool it though coz of budget reasons.

212 Evo should be more than enough for the CPU.

Maybe something along these lines?

I swapped out a few parts for less costly alternatives, ie the Gigabyte mobo and GPU. The Rosewill ARC has 43a on a single 12V rail and is also semi-modular. That let me add the Cooler Master N200 mATX case and the 212 Evo while sticking to the original budget.

Do you need a DVD drive? (When's the last time you used a DVD in a computer?)

Which mobo would be best for me?

I don't care about SLI. I'll do very little OCing. Would prefer to get the best possible boot time.

For the best possible boot time you're going to need to have your OS on an SSD.
Your mobo's not going to have that much of an effect as most have BIOS settings to minimize post delays.

If you aren't going SLI why not consider an mATX board?

You say you aren't interested in overclocking, what CPU do you/will you have?

4690k or 4790k. Not sure yet. Yes, I already have 3 SSD's but my boot time is still around 20 seconds. A friend has a slightly inferior SSD and boots in about 9 seconds. I assumed a setting in his mobo had something to do with it.

Yes, different manufactures call it different things, but it's a "fast boot" option or similar in the BIOS.

Thanks! I like your list better.

No problem, I have to pinch pennies too.

Is there a firm release date for the ASUS Rog Swift? (PG278Q)

Also, in several reviews of the monitor I've read of a forthcoming 4k version that will also use G-Sync. I presume if the Swift is $800, the 4k will likely be $1,200+. I suppose this will be a 2015 release.

Are we looking safe to jump in with something like the Swift given it is the first iteration of a 1440 that uses G-Sync? I'm less concerned about price drops on the ASUS specifically and more concerned about reasonable 4k G-Sync competition around the corner. Thoughts?

Not sure I've seen anything similar to that on my Asus P67 Sabertooh

Just did a quick search.

1. Is your OS SSD connected to a black SATA2 connector? (It should be, you mobo checks them first.)

2. Is it double posting? Your mobo seems to have an issue with this if the searches are anything to go by.

This was a message from Asus regarding the issue:
From time to time we needed to implement full resets in order to maintain stability due to the architecture of the Sandy Bridge platform. For instance, the system may require one full reset when the PCH power has been cut during S5 power state. To fix the most common additional reset (double POST when powering on from off state), enter UEFI BIOS -> go to ‘Advanced’ tab -> go down to ‘APM’, press Enter -> enable the “Power on by PCIe.” function. Then press F10 to save & exit. After save & exit, let the system boot into Windows or other OS, then perform a proper shutdown: Start button -> Shut down. You will no longer have the double POST. We will fix this in an upcoming BIOS release.

Have you tried the latest BIOS revision for your board?

So, this is what I'm looking at for my new PC. I'll be building it so I'm a bit nervous but what do you think? I want this to last a fair while so I went for the better stuff. Any suggestions or advice would be welcomed!

The Seasonic S12II is ancient and expensive. The Antec True Power Classic 650W PSU is the same price, uses a newer Seasonic design, and has better power efficiency. If you want to opt for the mATX suggestions on the previous page, you absolutely want modular power supply for the Fractal Define Mini you picked out. PCCG doesn't stock it but the Coolermaster V650 is a great semi-modular option that should be available from local computer stores. As for motherboard suggestions, this should be OK.

Also Windows 8.1 is actually a decent OS. Metro UI is garbage on a desktop but you never have to see it again if you install Startisback.

previously i posted that new drivers for a wireless usb adapter might have fixed my problems but i am still getting random usb problems and finally started getting bsod but only on startup or shutdown, and the bsod disappears so quickly i cant read the associated error code. no memory.dmp either even though i have it properly configured. as before, if i do a system restore everything works for a while, but the problem has a chance to arise every time i startup. i know, one "solution" would be to never shut down lol

ive tried to narrow it down with no luck:
checked all mobo connections again, nothing out of place
chkdsk on both my drives, nothing
windows memory diagnostic tool, nothing
memtest86 6 passes, nothing

i am probably going to reformat and hope that fixes things. if it doesnt then at least i will know for certain it is a hardware issue, and thankfully everything is under warranty. with win8 do i need to do anything if i am going to use the same license that i already activated on this pc?

PC Maintenance
How do I clean up dust and gunk inside the PC. My canned air sprays water if I spray it any way other than upright so I'm not even going to try.
Also is there anything I should do in terms of software and cleaning up files to help my computer chug along faster? I don't have an SSD (yet).

On the software side, try not to install bullshit programs on your pc, and run disk cleanup every once in a while. There are programs like ccleaner that do a registry cleanup and such, but I'm not sure how truly effective they are.

Ah, I'll replace the PSU then! What exactly is a modular PSU compared to a non-modular? They both look really similar. Antec have this one so maybe I could go with this if I pick modular? http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_226&products_id=19763

I'm on 1440p on a 770 4GB. For the vast majority of games it's no problem.

Im on a 780 now, but I was using a 1GB 6870 on a 1440p monitor for a year.

It works fine, if you have a more demanding game then just lower the resolution for that one game.

We had a discussion about routers about 10 pages back. The consensus is the router you have linked is one of the best consumer ones released in ages. I have that exact one and am ridiculously happy with it. Great software, great signal, great reliability. Go forth with confidence.

Which manafacturer is generally considered to have the best and most hassle free RMA service in the UK? I've had EVGA cards recommended to me by friends but they're RMA centre is in Germany as far as I can tell which sounds like it would be a real pain in the arse if something were to happen. I've mainly been looking at them, Gigabyte and MSI.

Also, this is a little premature as I haven't even decided definitively on my parts yet but when I do get around to building, there's nowhere in my home that doesn't have carpet and I highly doubt I'll be able the to build it anywhere else. What sort of precautions should I take in this situation?

Gigabyte is UK based. MSI is the Netherlands.

Evga do an advanced rma so being in Germany doesn't matter.

As Hazaro says, it lets you connect the cables you need. I've built in a Define Mini before and cable management can be a little annoying if you don't plan ahead and zip tie down everything that is not needed. Modular PSUs solve that issue since you simply don't attach the cables you don't need. The Coolermaster V650 I linked is a very good option because its cheap, has a lengthy warranty (5 years IIRC), only has the essential cables attached, and its actually good. I wouldn't go out of the way to get a modular power supply if you're paying a large premium or compromising quality.

But at the end of the day, you should swap out the Seasonic S12II 650W because it is a bad PSU for the price since there are 80+ Gold Seasonics (or Seasonic rebrands like that specific Antec model I linked) at a similar price range.

Thanks. Yeah, I was reading up on it last night and I'm going to buy one today. Any difference between the white one and black? I see the white one came out a little after the black one. I'm guessing it's purely cosmetic? I like Asus too. Buy monitors and mobos from them and they never steer me wrong.

Hey guys, I was wondering where we are on the CPU front. Has there been any word on the next AMD or Intel releases?

I'm still running an i3-2100 and have been long overdue for an upgrade. I don't know if I should bite the bullet now or wait a little while longer (I'm pretty patient).

Some time next year for Intel, ignore AMD really. Nothing worth buying on the horizon. Might as well buy now if you need it. Broadwell will just be a small step up over Haswell as has been the trend for many years.

Quick couple of questions, 500w PSU (40a on single 12v rail) & £200 saved so far. Should I get a R9 290 now or continue to save & wait for the 800 series?

Btw :1080p resolution x 2 monitors.

Should be purely cosmetic. Their latest firmware is real stable and has a lot of great features. You'll be happy with it.

If I'm not mistaken, Devil's Canyon processors just came out like two months ago. You can find an i5-4690K for a pretty reasonable price quite easily. I picked one up and a new mobo yesterday, very, very happy with my purchase.

I'm really happy I was able to pick this up for just under $200.

Link for anyone interested, they'll honor the coupon in store: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8992461&CatId=8586

How much of a price drop will we see on existing cards like the 770 or 780 gtx when the 800 series comes out? Like ~$100 or are we talking $200+?

I bought a GTX 760 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125466) and the fan noise is fairly noticeable. Is this normal?

Try creating a custom fan profile and see if that helps quieten it down.

We have to wait and see.

Seems the small r/microsoftsoftwareswap also isn't allowed to sell Microsoft products anymore. I assume Microsoft is targeting Reddit or something?

Would have to assume so.

I need an additional SSD and am thinking of either the MX100 at 512GB or M550 at 512GB.

It looks like the M550 is a bit better, but does anyone have experience with either drive?

MX100: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KFAGCUM/?tag=neogaf0e-20

M550: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IRRDHVW/?tag=neogaf0e-20

It's only about a $30 difference, but was just wondering if there is anything I should keep in mind.

Just grab whichever is cheaper, so in this case the MX100.

Well that sucks. I was going to buy a key from that guy. I kinda figured Microsoft would target Reddit eventually.

Just send a PM to someone from the confirmed September trade thread and see if they have any? You'd think this kind of wack-a-mole would have stopped by now.

No cable management done yet. Just wanted to get the thing up and running before the GAF Europa Universalis game.

Now, to load up some EUIV multiplayer to really put it to the test.

And maybe replace the PSU with an EVGA G2 w/ proper braided cables. And the motherboard for X97 with a 5820K.

It never stops.

I feel the itch to upgrade start crawling upon me. I'm currently sitting on a 2500k and 770 but mainly just want some new stuff to fiddle around with. I'm thinking about a i7 4970k, but I don't really need it at the moment for what I'm doing with my PC.

Since I have no real need to upgrade as much as i want to upgrade - should I wait for Broadwell instead?

If you haven't overclocked do that, it'll give you something to play with. 880 might be worth an upgrade if you really have to make a big splurge.
