So. Still getting nvlddmkm crashes. Mkenyon and I threw some things around last night via Steam and I will try those soon. Here's what I've done so far:

Situation:
-Tested all 3 GPUs by themselves through various benchmarks. Card 1 was the only one that crashed throughout these tests. Took Card 1 out of system and moved Card 3 to slot 1, and Card 2 to slot 3. Running 2-way SLI.

-got nvlddmkm crash after a few games of gsynced based BF4.

---

-I have reformatted
-I am on the latest Nvidia drivers
-I have run memtest. No errors.
-I have made sure power is set to high performance
- I have increased voltage and and power to 106% to the GPUs
-Tested each card individually. Card 1 was removed after crashing through the benchmarks.
-Tried different SLI bridges

Not sure what else to try. Never ran into this before this build. Is it a PSU issue? Motherboard ?I need to get this resolved because Gsync is truly amazing and I want to play :(.

PC brethren...Help me solve the great mystery

I have fixed my video cards issues by updating to beta drivers before. Maybe that's worth a try?

At least it sounds like a software issue, considering we know that all of the cards work fine except for maybe #1.

I'm on the latest they have - 340.52. In the past I did do clean installs between 3 sets or so. When that didn't work I reformatted.

I've run Memtest before with no errors, and still had system errors before. Doubtful, but maybe try 1 RAM stick at a time? I had some Hynix (lol) stuff in an old Alienware desktop a long time ago that caused my system to BSOD until I replaced it.

Just a thought?

So realistically, what would the difference be for me between an SSD on PCI-E or SATA3?

Versus SATA3 you'll notice slightly faster game loads and boots with the PCI-E.

Versus SATA6, the PCI-E is really only beneficial in huge file copies/moves and boot.

I will say, my rMBP has a PCI-E SSD versus my gaming desktop's 840 Pro on SATA6, and the laptop's boots are CRAZY fast. My gaming desktop, from cold boot to browser open is about 14 seconds. On my laptop? About 7.5 seconds.

But....... Does that REALLY matter?

So realistically, what would the difference be for me between an SSD on PCI-E or SATA3?
Depends on the drive in question.

A lot of the PCI-E SSDs are basically two SSDs in RAID0 on a RAID controller that interfaces through PCI-E.

I'd honestly try contacting EVGA. You'd think the $3000 in videocards you're using from them has earned you at least an afternoon of support.

3x 120Hz 3D-Vision ASUS VG236HE with 3 glasses and a XFX FXTRISTANDX Triple Display Monitor Stand. Monitors are debezelled

$899.98 CAD or trade for ROG Swift =)

I am considering buying a new video card at the moment but I am not sure what would be a step up from my 750 Ti at this point. I'm looking for something incremental though, not looking to nuke my wallet with a 780 or something like that....

OK guys am I doing better ?? Still need a PSU and CPU cooler.. any tips appreciated

Can you not get the Wesena (Streacom) ITX cases in USA?

Because i would build something like this
Wesena ITX
H81 ITX board
Pentium G3258
4Gb or 8Gb 1600Mhz Ram
Crucial MX100 128GB & HDD's
160W Pico PSU
160W 12v AC/DC power brick

I have broken stick (verified by tons of errors on memtest86) from a corsair vengeance 8gb set
http://www.corsair.com/en-us/vengeance-8gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cmz8gx3m2a1600c9

Can I replace it with a single 4gb stick or should I buy a new set? Corsair has a 4gb stick with same specs (and as far as I can tell, from research on the web the very same stick as each one from the 8gb pair)
http://www.corsair.com/en-us/vengeance-4gb-single-module-ddr3-memory-kit-cmz4gx3m1a1600c9

Please help so I can resume playing CS:GO without getting kicked from servers because of memory errors :)

Do you get any kind of message such as "Your Nvidia driver has stopped responding" "(insert program) has been blocked)? I've been getting that and I've done the same that you have. I'm wondering if I should RMA my 780 Ti. I need to do a little more testing on games other than WOW. My Event Viewer lists Event id 4101 and 4109 as the issue.

I'm thinking of building my first ever PC as a present to myself for a new job (and an imminent move out to SF). Here's what I'm thinking:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($229.67 @ Amazon)

Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24F1ST DVD/CD Writer ($20.74 @ Amazon)
Total: $1282.14

Thoughts on this build? I've never built a PC before in my life so I'm coming at this completely green.

I haven't gotten any answers yet and was hoping to start buying parts this week, so would love some feedback on this. I'm deciding to go the PC route instead of getting a PS4, and I'd love to be able to play most games on Ultra. Thoughts on this build? I was reading about the video card and it looks like it's longer than normal. Will this fit in the case I'm considering?

I have to run some ethernet cable in my house. Do I want cat5e or cat6 or something else? Also, I think I'm going to use couplers in a few places to make it easier. Will those slow down the speed at all (in a noticeable way)?

Solid list. The EVGA 760 is $10 cheaper at Amazon, so I'd go for that.

Ultra is kind of a weird thing, because it often doesn't do a whole lot for IQ compared to turning a few things down to getting a much better frame rate. I wouldn't set that as a goal, otherwise you'll end up disappointed at times.

That system is definitely capable of pushing games with very high IQ at 1080p.

Would drop the ram to 8 gb and the ssd to 256gb and invest the money in a better gpu, otherwise looking good :-)

I would drop the RAM to 8, I'm getting 16 but only because I edit video, if I was just getting a gaming rig I'd definitely go with 8. Maybe Drop the SSD to 256. Then maybe use that cash to get a 770 instead. Some places have a few 770s for only $50 more than what you're paying for that 760. Or you can do what I'm doing, and wait a month to see what the 870 will offer.

Ah I see. Alright I guess I won't put Ultra as a goal, I just thought that's what most people targeted with their PC builds.

Sure, I can drop the RAM and SSD, never against saving some $. What would be a better GPU that you would recommend?

Yeah, this is a good option if you're looking to get more performance right away. That'd give you the money to go to a 780.

Given that I have an HTPC and a fileserver, my anecdote might not be totally accurate. But, I've never felt constrained with a 240-256GB SSD. That's what I've had as the only storage on both of my gaming machines.

I don't really access anything on the HTPC or fileserver from either gaming machine though.

Steam + Broadband means that most games are available to play within 5-30 minutes of starting a download. Maybe an hour for a really huge game installation.

I have quite a bit of space on my primary gaming machine right now, and I have Planetside 2, Dirty Bomb, CS:GO, Dota 2, Marvel Heroes, EUIV, Mount and Blade, Divinity, Chivalry, and a number of other smaller games installed.

Do you have Oculus Rift DK2 installed? Apparently that conflicts with Gsync.

Does it crash with Gsync off? If it's stable with it off, are you sure Gsync isn't the culprit? It is in beta, isn't it?

This happened before G sync. No Rift here.

I'm sure support policies have changed over the years but one of my earlier BFG cards was having problems many years ago and I actually called customer support. I had a guy on the phone with me for about 2 hours working on the issue. It ended up being some sort of software compatibility problem and he helped me find it.

Worst case he would have had me send the card in but he spent quite a bit of time working on the issue with me first.

edit: Scratch that, it was a BFG card. But I've had good experiences with EVGA as well.

Thanks guys, I don't mind waiting a month or two if I can save some cash and get a faster card. I'm moving to SF within the next month for a new job so I'm not really in a rush to build a PC today. I'll save mkenyon's build for reference and then replace the GPU with an 870 whenever it comes out.

The 870 should hopefully be somewhere in the ballpark of $350-400, so that should give you a bit of room to do something like either a nicer case, more RAM, or larger SSD too.

Definitely come back before hitting buy, as a lot of deals can pop up to save even more money, or alternatively, to get better parts in certain areas.

OK guys am I doing better ?? Still need a PSU and CPU cooler.. any tips appreciated

if you are going to use it as an HTPC (no gaming) i'd drop the AMD APU and go for a low freq. i3 with integrated GPU, eventually adding a discrete nvidia card (something like a passively cooled GT 750).

there's nothing wrong with AMD APUs (i own a 3870k) but i say go with intel or nvidia for 2 main reasons:

- better linux support (if you want to go for something like openelec as a front end).
the AMD closed driver does not support HD Audio passthrough and the open source one, while some great work has been done in the past months, is still far from perfect.

- support for hardware h264 decoding up to 4k (while AMD UVD supports max something a tiny bit higher than 1080p) wich can still be useful since the GT 750 supports 4k@30hz output over HDMI.

no card supports hardware decoding of hevc or HDMI 2.0 (4k@60hz) right now so a GPU upgrade down the line will still be necessary.

if you still want an AMD APU i'd go for one from the new 7xxx series (Kaveri).

:)

I'll add this to stuff to try.
It will freeze and I have to reset my machine. Then I go into Event Viewer and I see the nvlddmkm has stopped responding and recovered error message. It freezes when I run SLI making me reboot, but when I run a single card it will still hang but doesn't force me to reboot.

This happened before G sync. No Rift here.

The only thing left I can think of, other than mobo being the culprit, is to try the following regedit... (Which I think you may have not tried yet)

http://www.instructables.com/id/How...olution-5-Changing-the-time-before-it-resets/

So, a question about SSDs. Ideally, I'd like a relatively small SSD (256mb) to save money. I'd only want Windows, BF4, and maybe 1 or 2 other games that'll fit. The rest I'd like to use a HDD.

Is this feasible? Can I have one game from Origin and 1 or 2 game from Steam be on an SSD, and everything else be on an HDD? Do these programs allow this? I'd also worry about the default program files, my documents, etc all being on the Windows SSD when I'd prefer them to be in the HDD.

Guys with SSDs, what say you?

You mean 250 GB right? :p Should be enough, I have a 250 drive with about 90 gigs worth of games installed on it, and I have 113 GB free space.
Keep in mind other than the games I only have windows and a bunch of small stuff on it, no huge programs or files.

PSA for PC-GAF: a quality desk chair and foot rest can make a WORLD of difference :)

I just got a new Steelcase Gesture chair last week and two foot rests (one for each foot...wide stance) and PC gaming is so much more comfortable.

Dusting off my Steam install now...

BFG was the fucking best ever. Their customer service was the gold standard.
I'm not sure what else they would do or tell me besides...send your card(s) in?
You can't be the only person with this sort of issue. I might try the EVGA forums first, give a full detail of what's going on, what you've tried to fix it, and a detailed list of your hardware.

There has to be an answer to it given that switching out cards doesn't fix it. You can't have 3 borked cards.

Just finished my build last night.

Case: Corsair C70 Military Green
CPU: Intel Core i7 4790k 4Ghz
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i
Motherboard: ASUS z97 Pro (Wifi)
PSU: Seasonic Modular G Series 650 Watt SSR650RM Gold Rated
Memory: 16GB (8x2) Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR3 2133Mhz Cas 9
GPU: EVGA 780Ti Classified DUAL ACX
HD: Samsung 840evo 500GB SSD
BRDisc: Pioneer Bluray/Dvd/CD Combo burner 12X

I bought the components over 2-3 weeks of closely watching sales and prices to get best deals. And I live near a Microcenter. Total parts cost just under $1800. Tonight I will try to hook up my DK2. The c70 is awesome and made it really easy to setup.

So my video card may be on its death bed (currently troubleshooting the issue here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=127168496#post127168496)

I've been out of the loop for a while now ever since I got my GTX 580 a few years ago, and since it appears as if I may need to buy another one rather imminently, I was wondering what would make the most sense to replace it for something equal or better in the current nvidia line of products.

How does the GTX 760 compare?

870. Probably around the same price.

My tip: If you decide to order the 770, buy EVGA, register your card, use their Step-Up program whenever the 870 releases. Step-Up is good for 90 days, you just pay the shipping and the price difference of what you paid for the 770 and what the 870 will cost.

As Kensairabbit37 already pointed out, you can only get EVGA reference cards through Step-Up, which is the main reason I just said "fuck it" and bought a 780.

Smokey, do you have the Geforce Experience installed? I had trouble with that program for some reason on my PC. Uninstalled it and zero issue now.

How about a Samsung SSD drive? The Samsung Magician software screws up Battlefield 4 for me if it's running in the system tray.

Yes to both, but I don't have the Magician software running.

magician has been good for me except i had to turn off RAPID because of the ram usage.

Yeah the software is great but for me personally if it was loaded and in the system tray during Battlefield 4 the game would keep minimizing for no reason. It was linked to the software as an issue on the Origin forums. Samsung may have patched it since but I never have it running anymore.

Can you not get the Wesena (Streacom) ITX cases in USA?

Because i would build something like this
Wesena ITX
H81 ITX board
Pentium G3258
4Gb or 8Gb 1600Mhz Ram
Crucial MX100 128GB & HDD's
160W Pico PSU
160W 12v AC/DC power brick

Interesting.. The ITX5? Looks very nice and cheap

ITX5-B-m.jpg

I was also told I would want Quad-Core...why did u opt for the G3258 ?
