Man, hearing about GPU shortages makes me glad I can afford to wait until the holiday season to jump on a 970. I'm also really interested in how far people can push the cards when overclocking - that's going to be a factor in my purchase this time around.

Crossed my fingers and went with cheap newegg shipping, hoping everything would ship out of NJ. Everything but the case shipped out of California. Damn. Things shipped out of NJ typically get here next day. Things shipped out of California using cheap ground shipping? Who knows.
7 business day wait time. It seems like they literally truck drive the items from California. I had 2 recent items come from Newegg California. Painful, coming from Amazon Prime subscriber.

Guys, I'm having problems finding the right mainboard for my new SLI setup. The problem is that I have a PCI-soundcard. I wanted to buy the Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 5 but:

Gigabyte-GA-Z97X-Gaming7-1600-f9ba5c500d4cfa91.jpeg

The only PCI slot would be covered with the fans of the 2nd GPU.

Is there any alternative that would work for me for a similar price?

*edit2*

Ohh, it's PCI? nvm!

*edit*

You could either

- put the soundcard in the top PCI-E x1 slot (right above the first GPU) or

- put it in the bottom PCI-E x16/x4 slot (intended for a third GPU), just beneath your second 970

PCI-E x1_3 (the slot between the first two GPU-slots) is also an alternative I guess, but it would be very tight and increase the heat of those cards.

Sound card is pci, not pcie

Hey Guys.

I figured someone would love to help me with this.

What is the best video card that you folks would suggest I get my buddy for his PC?

He currently has this:

http://www.cnet.com/products/gateway-fx-6840-15e-core-i7-870-2-93ghz/specs/

Edit:

1. What is the best?
2. What is the best per dollar vs. diminishing returns?
3. Should I consider getting him a second of the same card, assuming they work together like SLI.

He mostly just plays WoW but he also uses Netflix and Fraps a lot. So although his WoW raiding doesn't push his comp too much, between running two monitors and the other things I mentioned, he's starting to see huge frame rate drops at times.

I will have the same problem, except I'm not going SLI for a while still.

Just not using a sound card isn't an option for me at all. Onboard is not good enough, particularly in the level of volume it can put out.

My plan is to probably just buy an external sound card at some point. I know buying more things(I've gotta get a new PSU as well) hurts the 'value' factor here, but I could use a good external sound card anyways. That would solve your problem as well, but I don't know how much you want to spend more on one.
I already have an external soundcard, the Audinst Hud-MX2. I use it for my headphones and for my Adam speakers :)

The internal is for the ModMic 4.0 microphone and the quality sucks with the onboard soundcard :/

Sell your Xonar DG card and buy the Xonar DGX - it's the exact same specifications but for PCIe slots.

Or you could always buy a USB PCI bracket to increase the number of USB ports at the back, like this one.
The DGX might be the solution, thanks for the tip!

Thinking about jumping on a evga or zotac on NE even if i prefer the windforce or twinfrozr one as im worried they will be jacking up the prices of all the 970s due to demand. Only thing holding me back is that i dont really wanna be stuck with the gpu brand i dont even want for years.

Just wondering if I could get an answer to this question:

Have any Aussies ordered from Newegg before? Are they good and reliable? Are their shipping rates reasonable as well as their warranty/returns policy?

Their pricing is so good that I'm thinking of getting a couple of 970s from them rather than PCCaseGear.

Also, I've set my sights firmly on the ASUS Strix GTX 970 OC 4 GB. Are they a good choice?

Also, do I need to buy a separate cable for SLI?

Cheers.

Hey guys, did I make a mistake on the Cooler? Should I of went with water cooling instead?

I want to ask is whether I should of went with Water Cooling and a different Mobo(better overclocking), I'm hoping the I7 5820K can reach 4.4GHZ at least, preferably 4..5GHZ.

I worry because I've seen some posts around the net and i7 5820K seems to be having issues going over 4.0-4.2 GHZ.

Mordecai, Have you overclocked your i7 5820K yet?

This is my partial system, the main components:

PC Case : Cooler Master CM Storm Trooper Full Tower Case with Side Window $199.00
CPU Processor: Intel Core i7 5820K Haswell-E 6-Core LGA 2011-3 3.3GHz $449.00
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4 $399.00
Memory: Crucial 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 2133MHz $269.00
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000W P2 $299
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 Multi-Socket PWM CPU Cooler $109.00

Thanks.

EDIT: The i7 5960X is $1200 while the i7 5930K is $679, so to get the i7 5930K it would be $200 more, I'm already over my budget.

However I'll be willing to pay an extra $30-50 for a water cooling solution, however I'm hoping the Noctua can pull of 4.4GHZ-4.5GHZ.

Whelp, didn't realise that Newegg, Amazon and other places are all sold out. Most places are in Australia too. Ended up getting one ASUS Strix GTX 970 and I'll get another in a month.

A Noctua D15 performs almost equal to a top end AIO water cooler. I, myself, went from a Noctua U12S to a Cryorig R1 Ultimate air cooler which performs only slightly worse than the D15, but I prefer it's looks more. Anyway, my 5930K@4.2GHz with 1.17V is ~70Cs. Just jumping to 4.3GHz, it requires 1.26V and temps raises to low 90Cs. I tried 4.4GHz@1.32V for a split sec and almost hit 100C. I am staying at 4.2GHz because the jump beyond gets crazy hot. Really, if you want to hit 4.4-4.5GHz, you are going to need a very good custom water setup.

Do you mind running a cinebench for me at 4.2ghz?

I have never ran Cinebench before. Hope, this is what you wanted.

Perfect, for comparison:
3960x 4.8ghz 1255
3960x 4.84ghz 1264
3960x 5ghz 1292

Quite interesting considering the OC characteristic of Haswell E and the gain in efficiency through 2 gens of architecture.

What are you running the RAM at?

I am manually running my ram at 2666MHz. Going by XMP, I should be able to do 2800MHz, but it fails every time I try selecting any XMP speeds. From what I read from other forums, my Asus X99 Deluxe MB needs a bios update to fix the ram issues.

Are you on the latest bios? Update it if not.

I tend not to use XMP, on X79 they adjusted the VTT and VCCSA voltages to silly levels. Best way is to put the primary timings in yourself and set the ram speed manually to the XMP speed. Then set the Ram voltage. If overclocking then you need to play with VTT and VCSSA. Asus do have some clever ram tables that give good stability whilst overclocking the CPU.

I hear on X99 to reach the higher ram speeds (above 2666mhz) you have to use the bclk strap. That might be why your XMP fails. Generally XMP is no good anymore.

Is the 770 still a solid card?
Was thinking of picking one up soon - I heard the prices might drop a bit with Nvidias upcoming GPUs which is nice.

Yes. I updated to latest bios 801 as soon as PC was up and running. This bios fixes certain things, like over providing voltage to CPU, but messes up other things, like DRAM settings. My Corsair LX is suppose to be able to run 2666MHz@1.2V, but it won't. I have to run it at 1.35V.

Edit: Just notice there is a new 902 bios posted on Hardforum. Need to sleep and try them later.

Forgive me for this probably stupid question, but here goes:

I built my PC thanks to this thread from way back in 2011, and it's served me great over the years. Now that the 970s are announced, I'm looking to finally replace my 560 Ti, but I noticed that it has a PCI Express 3.0 interface. The motherboard I'm currently using only has a 2.0 one. Is it worth upgrading with things like this, or do I need a new motherboard first?

PCIe 2.0 vs 3.0 is only a few fps slower. Not worth upgrading unless you are doing a CPU & MB combo.

Thanks man, that is kind of sad to hear...I mean 4.2GHZ is nothing to sneeze at, however I need to ask a stupid question, how much of a performance hit will I get going from i7 2600K@4.5GHZ to i7 5820K@4.2-4.3GHZ gaming wise?

The results for the Temps you posted, you used Prime 95 right? Never exceeded say 75C?

Thanks again Knitoe.

There is no hit, his chip is matching my sandy at 4.5Ghz whilst running at 4.2Ghz.

are the new intel i7 5k processors worth it? DDR4 ram and mobo combs worth it???

For your standard gaming rig they are not worth it. For multi GPU setups with 3 or more cards and some sort of video editing machine, then it can be worth it.

I was wondering if you guys would recommend additional case fans for a fractal r4? I just have the one in the back that came with the case and the on my evo 212. Will be putting in a evga 970 on Monday.

The case should have 2 fans: one in the lower front as intake and one in the upper back as exhaust. I was wondering the same when I built mine, and in the end I just decided why not, the additional fan was only ~$10. I bought the same as the case fans, they are quite cheap, but also don't have PWM. But the case has one additional connector to the front fan controller. I put it in right from the start so I can't compare temperatures. The fans are pretty easy to install afterwards, so I'd say just see how it goes and get one as needed.

Thanks LilJoka, appreciate the info, so my ram is the crucial 4x4GB DDR4@2133MHZ,just so I'm ready when the parts come and I build it, how easy would it be to clock the ram higher?

What would be the process exactly? Can you even hit 2400 or 2800 with the standard crucial 2133MHZ ram?

Wow, totally didn't see the front fan lol. Well hooked up now, thanks!
