So after browsing part picker for a bit and talking to some people at work, I've come up with this as a potential build:

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/htuk/saved/qxtLrH

I'm looking for something that will last quite some time. Can you guys spot anything wrong with build? Anything I should considering upgrading/downgrading?

Thanks to anyone who can help. I use a single 1080p monitor by the way.

Get a z97 board, its compatible with the i7 4790k straight out of the box while z87 requires BIOS update.

Anyone here have an opinion on Corsair's new tramp stamp...erm, I mean new logo...

Oh god. It does look like a tramp stamp LOL.

They're getting as bad as CoolerMaster.

I think they've been on that level for awhile.

Their case design for the past two years, while thoughtful in use, looks like it was designed by a 20 year old drinking far too much mountain dew.

Yeah :( My 650D isn't nearly as sleek and stylish as my old Lian Li. It is very functional though.

The branding hasn't been that bad though. This is definitely an uptick in the obnoxious category.

Don't you need to re-enter the Windows product code if it thinks there's a hardware change? I remember I was trying to do this with an old Windows XP, and it did that.

I definitely had to do that when changing a mobo before (it was the same model too, just got a new one from an RMA).

I'd say the 650D is one of the last nice cases they made, aesthetically. The old Corsair Sail brand was classic though. Seems they're wanting to differentiate more of their stuff.

Yeah, just picked up the K65 RGB last night, and was very unhappy with that new branding.

Here, saved you 100 quid to put towards a 120 Hz panel.

Thanks a lot. I've swapped to the motherboard and RAM - http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/htuk/saved/c3dG3C

My only concern is the PSU? I'm leaning towards 750W just in case I decide to SLI the 970's in the future? If a 650W will be fine then I'll just go for that.

Do not plan for a future of SLI. Do it now to achieve performance that is otherwise unattainable with a single card, or don't. When the time comes that you think about maybe doing it, you are better off selling it and buying the best single card available.

Ok that actually makes sense, cheers.

What's the best way to go about this? I'm upgrading to an i5 from my Phenom II in January and have been dreading reinstalling windows.
I disagree with Durante, and have faced a number of problems when moving an installation to something with a different chipset. Reformat.

To each their own though.

I've been really disappointed with the glacial progress of SLI performance improvements. It's great for a 6000x1080 frame size but next to useless if I'm playing on a single screen.

So I have the following:

i5-2500k (stock 3.3 ghz)
evga GTX 670 2GB
8gb DDR3 RAM
1TB caviar black HD

What are some reasonable upgrades I could do to my system by early next year (Witcher 3 timeframe) without breaking the bank?

Will another 4GB ram do anything really?

Would adding another 670 in SLI be worth the ~ $230

I know I should OC the CPU, but I've always been scared (and i have stock heatsink).

SSD
GTX 970
And most of important of all buy some aftermarket cooling and OC the crap out of your CPU. Buying an unlocked Intel and not clocking it means you're leaving a lot of performance on the table.

It will be like a completely new machine after those upgrades and you really don't have to spend a whole lot.

If anybody is looking, I am selling an i5 3570K, 8 gigs of Corsair Vengence, and a Coarsair AX860i PSU. Not doing much with it so make me an offer.

I downloaded 344.16 in preparation for my 970 delivery today.. Should I install it now?
This is the first time I'm upgrading a GPU - please don't shame me!

I've also swapped the CPU from the i7-4970k to the i5-4690k. As from researching online, it doesn't look like the i7 is worth the extra ~£75 - http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/htuk/saved/c3dG3C

You could go mITX or mATX rather than full ATX.
You don't need 750W if you aren't doing SLI. 550W seasonic G Series is what you want.
Dump the arctic silver, firstly it's old and secondly the paste with the Hyper 212 is more than good enough. If you want to spend £10 get a better heat sink rather than paste that makes negligible difference.

Swap Samsung SSD for Crucial MX100.

What I'm going to do is uninstall the video card drivers, turn off PC, remove old NVIDIA card, insert new 970, power up, install new drivers.

Though you can probably just leave the current drivers there if you have an NVIDIA card, turn off PC, pop in new card, boot up and install new drivers.

If you have a GPU installed use display driver uninstaller to clean the system then shutdown. Install the GPU and boot into windows. Windows uses a generic driver for basic display on any card. Now install the nvidia drivers.

I've updated the SSD and got rid of the paste, cheers for that.

I'm still undecided on whether to just go for the SLI or not. I'll make sure I swap the PSU if I don't go for it.

Thanks again.

Congrats on the win :) , thanks for the help I might just get this case was keen on the Graphite 760T however seeing some reviews Thermaltake t81 looks to be just as great.

Other then that my Build remains same except the Case I got was the Corsair Graphite 760T, I wanted the Thermaltake but I looked at pictures and I decided to be shallow.(Thanks appaws, sorry for wasting your time)

No problem buddy. I just wish you could get the new 780T down in the land down under. Your build looks great.

Thanks duders. Grabbed DDU from Guru3D - hoping to hit the silicon jackpot today.

I did, it is a Gigabyte board. I flashed it from f3 to f5 bios version and the problem persists. I also just tried using the power supply from my old build and the problem persists so I am pretty sure it is something with the motherboard. I sent a help ticket to Gigabyte yesterday, but no response yet :(
Do you happen to have any USB hubs plugged in to the computer? I'd say unplug everything except necessary components and test.

Waiting on AMD announcement (probably nothing) then will be updating the OP. Thanks for waiting yall.
I DID IT. I made the decision. Guys I bought this board:

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z77A/overview/

It's an 1155 socket, but its a Z77 chipset instead. Is there anything I should be scared or aware of? Are there any disadvantages to this board?

Did I do you proud?
Board is ok
On top of my main problem, I've also noticed something weird in my bios.

My bios says that my 4790k is running at 4.4GHz when stock should be 4.0. I am quite confused.
Stock speed is 4.0Ghz with Turbo to 4.4Ghz that's normal.

Update your BIOS for your mobo and like above remove any extra cables (usually USB charging). Sometimes a bad cable with a short in it can cause that.
If both of those don't accomplish it unplug and replug all your cables outside and inside the computer as well.

Only usb device plugged in is a keyboard, but I have tried it without that. Even using the power switch on the motherboard does the same thing. I hit it once from being completely powered off and the whole case is powered: fans, HDDs, CDROM all spinning and the fans run at full RPMs, but the motherboard doesn't show any activity on its LED readout screen. Then when I press the button the second time, the fans quiet down and the LED readout screen shows its boot codes and windows starts a few seconds later just like normal.

There's always something like mATX board and Silverstone TJ08E case for a small SLI capable build. Still much more compact than full ATX without any significant drawbacks.

I finally placed my order:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790k
Video card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING
Power: EVGA SuperNOVA 750W G2
Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB 1600MHz
Motherboard: ASUS Z97-A
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Black
OS: Windows 8.1

Excited! :)

Need to complete with some additional fans so I can have a cool dustfree case.

And maybe a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo for the CPU? Would I need one if I don't plan on overclocking?

Alrighty, I think I've finally come up with a build I'm happy with (first time I'll be putting a rig together!). Everything fits pretty snugly into my budget even after factoring things like the monitor and OS and stuff. Gonna be buying things piece by piece, hoping to have everything by the end of the year if everything goes well.

Few questions I have though:
-Will the NZXT S340 be able to hold all these parts? It's really nicely priced and I love the minimalist look but I definitely don't want to get this case now and not be able to put everything in it when it's time to build. (It's not listed on pcpartpicker so I can't check through them)
-Will this be able to handle whatever game I play through Dolphin/PCSX2 at 1080p and full speed? It's really important to me that I can run those emus at those levels, although if I really can't I'll just have to deal with it.
-Should I definitely consider getting an SSD? I didn't include one because I didn't really know if it was necessary and they're a lot of money for not nearly as much space but I guess I'll try to fit one in if it's highly recommended.
-This should handle games like GTAV and MGSV at 1080p60fps with medium/high settings right? I mean I'm pretty sure it will but just to make sure. ;p
-Does it really matter what keyboard or mouse I use? lol, I see these gaming ones and stuff for quite a bit more money but I'd think I would be ok with a cheap option.
-Do I need a wireless network adapter/sound card to connect to wifi/hear sounds? This probably sounds really stupid but I'm wondering if either is necessary or if those features are already on-board.

I'm not super knowledgeable on some of these things yet so all help is much appreciated. :)
(sorry for such a lengthy post, haha. I just wanna make sure I'm doing this right.)

Depends on the PSU and what you intend to put in it. What's the case and PSU and what are you going to be installing?

I'm asking this here as I don't want to create a new topic.

Should I stop using the computer when copying files, either internally or from another computer via my router ? I was told to do this years and years ago, but I'm not sure if it still applies. Is there a chance that the copying will go wrong if I use chrome while it happens ?

What? No not in this day and age. Unless you are running ancient hardware.

212 would be much more quiet than the stock fan. And, no reason not to overclock. Huge performance gains for free.

Ok, I thought the stock was quiet already. I want a quiet and cool build this time around, compared to the last two builds that were not. Never overclocked before, but I guess it is pretty easy to do?

Fractal Design cases are Boss, with a capital B... and priced nicely.
The Define R4 is stellar: sleek, minimal, excellent cable management, quite fans, + sound absorbing panels.

For anyone contemplating SLI setups always think of mkenyon's analogy.
Pretty much sums it up in a nutshell

It's like sex. With a single partner, you can just go with things naturally. With two, it's pretty rad and a special thing, but starts to get a little complicated. With three, you're able to do things you couldn't imagine otherwise, but you have to put thought into it. With four, you just get overwhelmed.

Also mkenyon how long have you had that Seahawk in your pic?
