Hey guys! I need some help here. I currently own a 7950 card. I've been drooling over the gtx 970 cards, but seeing as I'm going into a period of low income they are a tad expensive.

I have discovered however that I can buy a second 7950 for less than a third of what a 970 costs in my country. (Sapphire brand)

My question is, do you think it's worth it? I have never had a dual GPU before, but my PSU can handle it.

I am a bit worried about heat. I use a coolermaster haf X case, which has a large side mounted fan blowing right at the GPU area, so I've been able to do a moderate clock through catalyst control centre. How much do you think the temp will rise, and will I have to revert to default clock to avoid overheating if I bring in another GPU you think? If so then a lot of the performance a second card adds might be negligible compared to what I'll lose.

My goal is to tide me over till I get more money. I play at 1440P, and always aim for 60 fps. Do you think I will be able to play the witcher 3 with a setup such as this? (i5 3570k)

I know I will have to turn down a lot of settings of course, but maybe at medium settings?

The alternative is to rely on my Xbox one/ps4 until I am making money again a year or so in the future. (I have one year left at university)

I would go with a cheaper single card option to be honest. I only thing dual/triple cards are a good solution when you've basically exhausted the performance peak a single card can offer, so only for really high-end builds.

This may be wrong, but it's just my view on it.

Ok. You are correct of course. But I have been told that buying a single mid to high class GPU and then buying another one of the same when it's cheap is another option. But I could be wrong.

And buying a strong card now isn't really an option, because of my lack of income. (As I pointed out above)

EDIT: Seems like I can get a 7970 for basically the same price as 7950. Also Sapphire.

Having seen the performance of both of these, go for the AMD. The Bay Trail setup just feels incredibly slow - we had to build forty systems with them for a school and they take forever just to install Windows. The AMD one is much more snappy and to be honest isn't any more expensive either.

Couldn't it have been slow because of other components? The laptop from 2008 I'm currently using has a 2.26Ghz Intel P8400 and it runs smooth. It's hard for me to grasp that a J1800 would be slower.

A friend of mine is considering buying this build but I think he could do better with the money spent so I'm looking for some feedback from the experts here.

The PSU clearly pops up as too expensive, specially as there's only one store with it in Portugal and costs 210€ and in my opinion the € would be better spent on a even better display.

What about switching to a Gigabyte GTX 970? How much memory would you recommend for a PC with this purpose?

Thanks in advance once again guys.

Weird question but I know you guys in here really know ur shit so u might be able to help me

I setup a wireless logitrch mouse/keyboard on my HTpc but the range was extremely short and buggy, which I found out might be caused by usb 3.0 interference. I didn't see an option in bios to disable usb 3.0 so I just unplugged the USB 3.0 wire that goes into mobo

This fixed my issue but it also disables 4 of my USB ports on the HTpc. Anything I can do to make this work? Is there non-2.4ghz wireless hardware?

For video editing/3D modeling, I'd take a good look at a 5820K. The two extra cores are really valuable in those use cases and it overclocks just as well, if not better than a 4790K. There's going to be a price jump for the system as a whole if you're not near a Microcenter (and being in Portgual, you're not) of ~$300, but I think it's worth it.

I would also recommend going 970(slightly worse)/980(slightly better) over a 780Ti. Price/performance those guys win out for sure. Going to a 970 and then 5820K/X99/16GB DDR4 seems like a pretty good option.

In regards to how much RAM is needed, it's really application specific. You'd have to ask your friend how much he has, how frequently he maxes it out, and how much he could theoretically use.

Does the mouse/keyboard uses a usb receiver? If yes, have you tried using a usb extension cable to move the receiver further from you htpc for less interference?

As for non 2.4GHz wireless, there are 5GHz and bluetooth options.

They both had 4GB DDR3 1600 and 1TB hard drives in, and the AMD one was noticeably faster to install Windows and to update than the Celeron. Also some anecdotal evidence but Passmark results put the 5350's performance at about 2.5x that of the J1800.

Does that say anything about general performance? I wouldn't know. The Passmark results are obviously much higher on the 5350 because it has 4 cores. The only applications I want to run are single-threaded though. The most I'll do at the same time is browse (Firefox in Ubuntu is single-threaded) and listen to music. What will I actually gain from 4 cores then? I don't know much about this stuff and I'd love to learn more.

Just got an Asus 4K monitor and honestly I'm underwhelmed. I've been using a Qnix PLS monitor and the colors are just so much better and the refresh rate so much higher that I'm not too sure if I'm going to stick with it. I also have an Asus 144mhz 1080P monitor that I'm going to compare it against but I think it's too soon to jump into 4K (running GTX 780 TI SLI).

Day 8 of not hearing a peep from Zotac about my broken video card I sent them. This company really grinds my gears, they are so slow with everything

Currently I have an i52500k with a HD 6800.
Needless to say the GPU is definitely showing it's age.

I was thinking about upgrading to a 280x, for about 100 more I can get a 970. But that 100 dollars is pretty significant as far as life priorities go for me right now. So I guess the big question is, does the 100 dollars make that huge of a difference?

Will there be a big price drop soon I should be aware of?

My goals are trying to play modern games i.e. watchdogs, shadows of mordor, ffxiv, with decent graphic settings. Is this doable on my rig?

Yes, it's worth the $100. The 280 is at the end of it's life cycle and the 970 is at the start. I would spend the extra cash.

I agree with bro1. You'll get a LOT more mileage out of the 970 and the i5 2500k will hold up for this cycle. The only other thing you should be doing (if you aren't already) is overclocking your 2500k to 4.2-4.5ghz.

Alright, I'll hold off on upgrading for another month then. Sadly my mobo is able to OC as far as I know. I guess I gotta invest in a new one eventually.

It actually also gives you a single thread rating too, which lists the AMD's single thread performance a full 40%+ higher than the Celeron, so you'll still get better performance regardless. The extra cores won't really help you but the faster single-threaded performance will.

Is any of that overkill? I was wanting to stay under $1000, but if that's the best I can get currently for the money I'm cool with going over budget a little bit. Anyone have any ideas for me. Thanks.

You'll want a Z97 mobo. You can probably drop the DVD drive too, unless you know you'll need it (may as well save the $20). I'd recommend Windows 8.1, but that's more of a personal preference thing anyway.

Freeisoburner give me "Hardware Error 8192." The Windows 7 burner gives me error code 0x8007045D. Is there any way to fix this?

This is what I would do. Doesn't get you to $1,000 but it is a little better. It would help if you had a Micro Center near you (type microcenter into google and see what comes up). If you included them as a merchant, you would be able to get everything for about $1,000 (most of the savings come from the CPU).

I am upgrading my computer because the 2500k is not enough anymore (for streaming). I am looking into the 5820k, and I am having a difficult time choosing the motherboard for it. My current choice is the X99 MSI Plus motherboard, but I am not sure if it's the right choice. I need Renesas USB 3.0 controllers so that my capture device(x capture 1) works with it.

In addition to that, I have a define r4 tower, and I have been considering going with the h100i, but I have never installed a liquid cooling system before. I don't know if it will fit in the tower.

I have a Define R4 and a H100i mounted on the top position. It is a tight fit with my ASrock Z87 Extreme 4 but it fits. Fit may depend on the mobo but you should be good.

Alright guys, this is the build I have for now but will probably tweak a few things. Still waiting on those non-reference cards so in no hurry to buy just yet. I want some opinions. I'm sitting on $2k budget. Now, I'm not entirely sure if I'm going with this motherboard yet. I've read it's VERY picky with RAM and the RAM I picked I'm not sure is compatible since it doesn't appear to be on the Asus list despite PCParts saying it's compatible. Also, I'm not sure it will be okay with that CPU cooler. Will the heatsink hit the ram? Should I go for higher grade RAM at something like 1866mhz? So, any suggestions on the mobo/ram would be nice. It's going to be mostly a gaming rig and I will be overclocking but I'm an overclock noob...so it will be a learning process for me. Here's the thing though, I'll likely add a second 980 down the line at some point so my question is that HX750i good enough for 2 GPUs or should I upgrade to the HX850i?

If anyone wants to convince me not to buy that PSU go ahead but it seems to be built like a tank, great efficiency and it's super quiet. Maybe not the best value at that price point but I like it despite it being a CWT PSU it appears to be high quality. So...opinions are welcome. Will probably add 2-3 fans to the case to so any suggestions there would be great. Rip it apart if you want. I want insight because I'm a noob.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention I have storage here at my house. I don't need any HDDs because I have one of the original Samsung F3 Spinpoint before they were bought and it's brand new never used plus I have more if I choose to drop it in there.

Not sure if you're set on that case, but going micro atx would save money and space.

I would avoid buying a Zotac card, and stick to one of the top tier brands. Asus, EVGA, MSI, Gigabyte.

People looking for a good budget case need to check out the new NZXT S340. It's excellent. Getting great reviews from all the top sites. A modern, open design for just $69.

you got a stream link? if you are bottlenecking your CPU I'd like to see what it looks like.

I could explain what exactly happens. My current stream setup is using the x264 preset at fast (for console captures only). The CPU hits 100% usage very quickly at that point, and it causes the stream to lag a bit. I could still play the game very easily at 100%, but the stream suffers due to it. The reason why I use the fast preset is because I could stream games at 720p 60 fps at 2,000 bitrate without the stream getting super pixelated. If you're still interested in seeing what it looks like, I can stream quick session for you.

I wouldn't suggest a 60 FPS stream to be honest, especially not at that bitrate. Try 30 FPS. 60 FPS is really cool and all, but unless you have quality options for viewers then a lot of them may not even be able to handle a 60 FPS stream.

Go ahead and stream though, I'll type in your chat if you want to mess around with settings.

I use OBS at very fast preset, my upload unfortunately is my main bottleneck, so I stream at 540-600p and 1600 bitrate, 30 FPS.

I have a stock 3770K

Noticed your edit for Console captures, that makes sense then, I still suggest going down to 30 FPS though.

I hate that motherboard so much it's not even funny. I would recommend something cheaper or considering going for a 5820K build. That motherboard is made for high-end overclocking and has tons of features I guarantee you'll never use. I also advise against SLi later down the road because inevitably it will be more trouble than it's worth, and a cheaper PSU since that whole system will draw less than 350W--the joy of Maxwell.

780 -> 970 worth it for like 100$? (CAD price for a G1 970 is 429). I game at 1080p but on a 144hz, so higher FPS is better, and if the G1 970 can overclock me 20-30% past a 780 it would be worth it

I suppose I have made the right decisions with my choice? I'll take that as a yes :\

Update 1: I bought the components that I listed above. Ordered a Renesas USB 3.0 Controller on Amazon for 20 bucks. Will update on how that worked out.

Update 2: I will be getting it Monday. There was another user on the reviews section named LtShrimp, and he stated that it does not work. But I think he bought the wrong controller because there are multiple options for the controller (The one that he bought is an Etron Controller).

I reccommend a asus z97 mother board, 140 bucks and way more sensible. I also recommend a different cpu cooler. that 212 gets pretty loud and for 20 bucks more you can get a noctua that will be quieter and oc a little more.

I'd research power requirements of your rig way more, 980s are power efficient. Even with future-proofing in mind, most people won't ever need more than 750-850 watts

970 can overclock up to 980 stock speed. Which a 980 at stock is better / matched to a 780 ti. You'd essentially be moving up the step.

Praise to Be Quiet!
Thankfully it turns out my 2008 modular PSU from them came with an 8 pin atx cable.

It's only 450w but with 4x 20amp 12v rails I expect it to easily handle the 4790k arriving this week.

Is that wishful thinking?
I'm only pairing it with a Radeon 5770 for now anyway.

Is there a gpu usage monitoring tool that works like the Windows resource monitor e.g. like this:

I have an SSD and HDD that I boot from depending upon what I am doing. If I load in via the HDD Speccy reports that my GTX 670 is running at:

GPU Clock 914 MHz
Memory Clock 3004 MHz

This is without me loading any software other than what Windows 7 loads at start up. If I load via the SSD then both readings are 314MHz. The SSD is a lot 'cleaner' as it has only recently been installed but it does have a fair amount of the same type of software loading at startup.

It is a needle in a haystack trying to find what could be making the card run at these frequencies.

Edit: I have been logged in for 22 minutes and the card is still at 914MHz and 3004MHz without loading any graphics demanding software.

It actually also gives you a single thread rating too, which lists the AMD's single thread performance a full 40%+ higher than the Celeron, so you'll still get better performance regardless. The extra cores won't really help you but the faster single-threaded performance will.

I'm really confused now because the Cinebench single-threaded ratings of the J1800 and 5350 are nearly equal. Why is their such a huge difference between the Passmark and Cinebench comparison? Which should I trust?

Here's the Cinebench comparison.

So I decided I want the HD 7970 for crossfire.

Another (somewhat urgent) question though:

I have a XFX ProSeries XXX Edition 750W PSU, semi modular.

I have used all the power cables that came with , and all the cables are stretched around my big case. So I won't be able to connect my second GPU to my power supply as is. Since my PSU is modular and has available outputs, I had thought that I could buy new cables (not adapters) to plug in my PSU in one end, and graphics card in the other, so that the GPU gets enough juice.

I have tried searching online for such cables , and have struggled a bit with finding suitable solutions (found only adapters more or less) Is this something that is possible at all ? What cables can I use? I am not a handy guy, so making my own cables is not really an option.

This is kind of urgent , as I'm supposed to be buying a 7970 used today, and since I'm not interested in buying a new power supply to power this older gpu I need to know if my old PSU can be "expanded".
