What monitor will you be using? i.e. what resolution and refresh rate are you aiming for... also, gsync/freesync or no?

Planning on playing on 1080p for right now but will upgrade to 1440p sooner than later. Part of my waffling on this decision is that Freesync monitors have a tendency to be cheaper and that sways my decision towards AMD but most games will be DirectX 11 for a while yet. Whichever I go with I'll end up eventually getting an adaptive sync monitor to go with the respective card.

On my recently built 2x 980 GTX SLI system using an i7 4790K (no overclocking) I'm getting a 3DMark Fire Strike score of 16912 (Graphics Score 23074). Is this low? Would changing the PSU (currently using an Antec 750W Bronze) increase the performance?

I can't speak for the Fire Strike benchmark since I don't use it, but getting a different power supply will not improve performance.

Edit: Shouldn't you be able to see what scores other people with similar PCs can achieve?

I have the gtx 560ti, how is the gtx 950 in comparisson? Is it even worthi it?
It'll be a moderate to strong boost in performance, depending on the game. How much do you think you can spend on a graphics card upgrade, and what country are you in?

Got myself a R9 390 Nitro to replace my Gtx 670.
How do i handle the drivers now to make the swap flawelessly? Any tips?

Download AMD drivers, remove Nvidia drivers, shut down, put in new gpu, turn on, force restart if needed and turn on again, install AMD drivers, done.

Just to add on this: That's all you really need to do, but if you want, you can use a tool like Display Driver Uninstaller to remove all traces of the old AMD drivers if you are worried it may interfere (unlikely to happen, but if you run into issues then try the tool).

The Define S was tempting me. I don't need optical bays, but I do need the storage of the R5. Porn.

Edit: Hmmm, 3 3.5" slots and an additional 2 SSD bays might be enough for me.

The indecision is literally killing me. It's the last decision I have to make before I buy.

Still hung up on cases. Anyone have experience with the Fractal Design Define S?

Looks like it gives up optical bays for airflow and cooling support. I have no intention of installing an optical. If I really need one for something, I'll buy a cheap external.
I'm planning to order the non-windowed version later this week. For airflow I'm going to install two Noctua F12's for front intake, directly in line with the CPU and GPU. PCgameware.co.uk showed that adding additional fans did help with CPU and GPU delta temperatures, for what it's worth. I'm sure Fractal kept the number of stock fans to a minimum because a large proportion will be installing radiators.

The only thing I'll need to figure out later is whether to keep the stock 140 as a third front intake or move it to the bottom intake for better GPU cooling. The PSU fan filter covers the bottom fan as well. The HardwareCanucks video shows decent spacing between the bottom fan and the PSU cables, but I think he used a 120 for the bottom. I thought about moving the stock 140 to the side panel but then I'll have to buy a magnetic fan filter.

hey GTX 970 owners, which card are you using right now and do you like it?
MSI 4G gaming or whatever it is called, love it.

Edit: it's very cool under load, quiet (fans don't spin at low temps) and it overclocks really well. I've also heard good things about the gigabyte g1.

I'm in the final stages of tweaking. I'll probably order 2 weeks from this Friday. I'm hoping for some sort of Micro Center bundle, but if this doesn't happen, I'll just pay the full price. Someone convince me I'm not making a mistake by not getting the R5. I feel like $69.99 is too cheap for a case. They have to be skimping on something.

I spent a good chunk of today reading case reviews. I don't think they skimped as much as removed a bunch of bells and whistles. It's basically a big open case that's made for easy water cooling, which is probably why I'm not going to get it. The drives mount on the back side of the mobo rather than in the racks, saving more space. It also has fewer front ports than many cases. I think stripping out some of that material and creating a big empty space probably saved some production costs. It's a great case for water cooling, but I think I want something more traditional.

CPU is great for an itx build, but you'd have a hard time finding a motherboard for it.

sell it to me for cheap and go skylake

I can't find any lga1155 itx mobo anymore, anywhere!

Location: Philippines (hence I can't sell it to you. lol.)

Ok, so far I have:

NCASE M1
Silverstone SX600G PSU

And am currently looking to buy from www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/ (NZ dollars):

ASUS Maximus VII Impact Intel Z97 Mini-ITX LGA1150 Motherboard
Intel Broadwell Core i7 5775C 3.30GHz 6MB LGA1150
Corsair CMY16GX3M2A1866C9 Vengeance Pro 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3-1866 CL9
Mobo/CPU/Memory Total: $1,241

CPU Fan:
Noctua NH-D9L Low Profile CPU Cooler w/NF-A9 PWM $110
SSD:
Samsung 850 EVO Series 500GB M.2 SSD (MZ-N5E500BW) $380
GPU:
ASUS GTX970-DCMOC-4GD5 GeForce GTX970 OC 4GB GDDR5 PCI-E3.0 $600

Does this seem good? May also need another case fan? Blower style GPUs are supposed to be better, but should I go for the larger 970 instead of the compact one above? Are Asus GPUs rubbish?

The lower power 5775C seemed like a better option good for the smaller NCASE over an 6700K, right? They're about the same price, much like x99/5820K :S

Only really gaming and some Adobe CS6 stuff. Thanks for any advice, hoping to build this weekend!

I got a define S and it's awesome. Nice air flow and it's the best looking case I've owned. Was in the same situation 2 weeks ago and I don't regret my decision. Just buy it ;)

The R5's front door can swing open, it has 2 more usb ports, a 3 speed fan controller, 8 3.5" hdd and 2 5.25" trays. The trays can be taken out when you don't use them, so if you feel like you need optical drive or more than 3 hdd in your pc, you may want the R5.

The S makes for a cleaner interior though imo and it has bigger glass panel to show off the inside haha.

I've built hundreds of PCs and the evo 212 was the most frustrating fan install I've ever experienced. I watched 4 videos of it installed and it was still a pita.

Yeah, similar except for the hundreds of pcs, more like a dozen. I bought one thinking it was going to be simple, snap in pins, done.

Man, I would never ever recommend that to a beginner. Maybe I'm just dumb but I felt like I had to do a lot of puzzle solving on the instruction pictures and I really had no idea I was going to have to take the entire main board out. Wasn't in the mood for all that but I guess it did bring my temps down considerably in the end.

Wish I had watched a video before hand, would have went a lot faster I think.

Well I id it and it worked. I can't believe it. I've built my first pc, and it's a beast to boot with that gtx980ti... My only issue is that the corsair 540 recommended case comes with 3 pin fan adaptors, whereas the motherboard is a 4 pin connection... I'm told that I can connect a 3 pin, but there is no fan control, which seems like itd be incredibly power draining, loud and probably useless if I'm not overclocking - saying that if any of you guys can tell me otherwise, I am all ears.

Depending on the fans and your tolerance for fan noise, it may well be a non-issue - I wouldn't worry about the power use at all. If you're really sweating the noise, you could always just chuck in an inexpensive fan controller in one of the 5.25" bays. Alternately, pick up some PWM/4-pin fans.

I have the corsair 540 (I now have a fan controller though), but the motherboard had different speeds in the BIOS. Check your BIOS.

Hey guys I could use some advice in regards to traveling with my (future) gaming desktop. I'll be traveling by plane for about 13 hours (from NA to Asia) and I want to know the cheapest and safest way to do so. It also be nice if its a method I can use again multiple times because I'll be moving about once every two years.

I believe I once heard of PC specific suit cases before but that's definitely an expensive route. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I don't know anything about shipping methods, but when transporting entire PCs, you should remove certain parts and keep them separate and not left inside the PC, like large air coolers and graphics cards. Sudden forces could put stress on the attachment points and cause warping, bending, and other awful things to happen.

It's alright to leave the motherboard and hard drives in the case, those are usually sufficiently secured.

Thanks, if I end up doing it as checked baggage in a normal suitcase I'll probably wrap everything separately, and thrice over haha

how likely is a sale / price drop on the XB270HU around black friday time. I just popped in my 980ti and am currently just running stuff at 1080p. I am itching something fierce to see some g-sync and higher res goodness, but fuck me the monitor is so expensive.

also about checking a bag with your PC in it. I would be very, very, very wary about that. When ever they load baggage onto planes they just throw that shit everywhere, and flying to asia I'm going to assume your luggage will be transferred more than once. Sometimes zippers fall open, shit falls out and they stuff it back in all willy nilly. Last time I flew, I watched six bags fall about 10 feet off the conveyor belt going to the planes cargo hold, and the guys just tossed the bags back on the belt with no regard. If possible I'd try to carry on all your sensitive parts like the GPU and CPU.

I am having an extremely weird issue at the moment.

1080p 144hz G-Sync screen. I can run games fine @ 1080p above 60fps. As soon as I use DSR, the game caps at 60fps. No idea what is causing this. The refresh rates are set to 144 for all resolutions in Nvidia control panel.

This started happening with Life is Strange, so I just played at 1080p because I thought it is a game specific issue. Now the same with Fallout NV. WTF?

I just tried this with another game. As soon as I use DSR (and go above 1080p...) 60fps cap. Really stupid and annoying. Might be a W10 issue? I am using the newest Nvidia driver. Help? :(

hey GTX 970 owners, which card are you using right now and do you like it?

Asus strix

coil whine at 200+ fps (and gets louder as fps goes higher, in the new 3d mark when you get 1600 fps in the mobile gfx test it sounds like the whistle of a kettle on the stove lol)
Also for some reason theres some minor coil whine while playing battlefield, I haven't heard any in any other game (as long as fps doesnt go over 200)
Apparently coil whine is an almost universal problem with gtx 970s across all brands (for shame), which is odd because you would think that each manufacturer having their own power devilery would mean that wouldn't be the case....
The internet says the asus strix don't suffer from it much, the internet was full of shit as mine has it.

Fans aren't exactly quiet when the card is under full load (fans spin up to 40 percent speed and for some reason they become pretty noisy at that speed , anyone else have this issue with this card), but the card runs 10+ degrees cooler than other brands so with a fan profile if you set the fans down to 30 percent it should stay really quiet. The fans turn off when you're just doing desktop stuff so theres 0 noise then which is really nice.

The card is 11" long so forget about fitting it in small cases. It just BARELY fit in my antec sonata III

It uses a single 8 pin connector, if your psu doesn't have an 8 pin (like mine) then you can use a 2x6 to 8 pin convertor , I also heard of people just running it with a 6 pin plugged in and it working just fine (only difference between 6 and 8 pin cables is how much wattage they are rated for, it's the same cables coming from the same 12v rail on your PSU)

Apparently it's an overclocking beast but I haven't tried overclocking yet, atm I have plenty of performance in current games and would rather it stay quiet.

Overall I'm fairly happy except for the fan noise when under full load, I wonder if my fans are borked or if they're supposed to be like this. My ancient hd4870 sapphire card was way more quiet and that was also a 150Watt card

I just tried this with another game. As soon as I use DSR (and go above 1080p...) 60fps cap. Really stupid and annoying. Might be a W10 issue? I am using the newest Nvidia driver. Help? :(
Apparently this is a thing with DSR on nvidia from what I heard... DSR = limited to 60 hz with gsync, fuck knows why.

hey GTX 970 owners, which card are you using right now and do you like it?
Gigabyte G1.
Works like a charm.
Fast, cool, quiet.
Love it!

Game on 1080p TV primarily and sometimes on 1920x1200 monitor.
Won't go any higher so this GPU should sustain me for a long time.

Really?! If there is some trouble with Gsync and DSR, that might explain why MGS:GZ started stuttering like crazy when I used a DSR resolution yesterday, no matter how miniscule the increment was (first game I used DSR with since I got my Gsyn display). It was still running at 50fps+ so Gsync should have smoothed everything out as usual. DSR worked flawless when I was still running my old ass 1080p60 TN monitor. Hrm, bummer... I might try a custom resolution then.

I haven't experienced any particular issues with G-Sync + DSR. I don't think I've noticed a frame cap. But these posts made me think of the one below from the G-Sync thread, which sheds some light on some of the settings combinations it doesn't like.

...

My only beef with G-Sync is the issues Nvidia has with it when working with DSR, SLI and MFAA. Basically SLI+DSR = ok, but SLI+DSR+G-Sync = disabled. It's downright idiotic. I would be fine if I could use SLI+DSR (sans G-Sync) but since the option just disappears when G-Sync display is connected (no matter if the feature is even enabled), I can't. Seems to be the same with MFAA. Hopefully these will be fixed in a driver update but it's been about 6 months since Nvidia said that this is "in development" and so far nothing.

The other issue is not being able to use G-Sync in borderless and windowed modes. I wish it worked at least in borderless as PCSX2 uses that for fullscreen. Somebody on the GeForce forums did mention that the G-Sync indicator light is red when using the display with Windows 10 so hopefully G-Sync can work on that. We'll see by summer.

Hmm, that is weird. I am trying to make a post on the Nvidia forums to shed some light on this. Will report back if I hear anything. (But currently their forums are not working properly, can't post. Figures...)

Please don't make blanket statements. I just tested this myself and it is simply not true.

I ran Hitman Absolution at 80fps avg at 4K DSR on my Titan X.

For reference I am running Windows 10 and downsampling to a 1440P 144hz Gsync monitor.

My cousin wants to build a new gaming PC so I though I'd get some suggestions from here. The budget includes a monitor and blu ray drive but not windows (getting it from reddit), keyboard and mouse.

Your Current Specs: N/A
Budget: $800(Canada)
Main Use: 5. Gaming , 4 Movies and General Use
Monitor Resolution: Already picked Asus VS229
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: All games by blizzard. Crpgs, older rpgs like fallout 1,2 / NeverWinter Nights / Might and Magic etc. He'll also be playing multiplatform games on this PC like mad max, no mans sky etc. He's more of a console gamer so visual fidelity doesn't interest him but frame rate does. He wants at least stable 30fps.
Looking to reuse any parts?: No
When will you build?: By next week
Will you be overclocking?: Maybe. He wont do it but I might overclock the PC for him.

He has already decided to get an Asus VS229 for a monitor and BitFenix Prodigy for a case. That leaves around 550$ for the remaining parts. Any suggestions would be really helpful.

Yes. And, you don't have to put much effort into it. After doing it enough times, I notice all I need was wiping it well off with a plain facial tissue. Using rubbing alcohol, exotic fabrics and materials and etc. maybe makes a few degrees difference which is really not worthwhile.

What do you get in the retail package for a Skylake 6600k that you don't in the OEM version?

It seems to be so hard to find a bloody video/unboxing of the retail 6600k.

Even with a video, there just isn't much room to work with if your hands are of decent size. I did get it obviously but i'm hopefully re-doing it today with the help of someone else to hold the fan in place proper while i bolt it down.

There is nothing in the retail box other then the cpu. Does not come with a fan.
