Should I avoid VA or PLS screens for gaming? There are some good discounts right now on the Samsung c24f390f 24 inch with free sync (249 cad). But this seems loads cheaper than competing free sync displays from BenQ or Aoc... but it's not a TN panel. Is it a bad choice for games? (Thinking of pairing with a 480).

I was under the impression that Seagate drives tend to be unreliable and fail quite often. That's far more expensive here (the UK) than the 1TB Canvio basics, though.

Most seagates YES

however the drive used in that one is used in the very reliable samsung drives. DF did an article on the xbox game drives detailing everything inside them. They are insanely reliable and probably the best externals seagate has.

Also forgot/didn't realize you were UK, sorry bud.

Gentlemen,
Putting together a rig and thought I'd just get the once over and some advice from the pro's. I am a console gamer at heart and only just getting into pc so be gentle.
I am getting a prebuilt machine as im not 100% confident putting it together myself so im limited to the parts I can change on the build But im quite happy with whats on offer.
My biggest question really is on motherboard and advantages other than sli/crossfire options they offer. This machine I hope will only be gettin graphics cards upgrades within the next 3/4 years with maybe the option to add more ram if needed.

Processor:Intel Core i5-6600K 3.50GHz Skylake

Graphics Card: GTX 1070 or 1080 still to decide

Memory: 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 - 3000MHz

Storage: 250GB Samsung SM951 M.2 NVMe Hard Disk, plus 2tb drive

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170 Gaming K3 ATX

Power Supply: 550w corsair v5550 80+

Straight of the bat this machine is 100% gaming so Ive stuck with i5 6600 but there is an option to go up to the i7. Would I be right in thinking the i5 in a gaming rig is perectly fine and the i7 would not make much a difference?
The motherboard can be switched for an
Asus z170 pro gaming
Asus rog z170 maximus
Gigabyte z170x gaming 3
Gigabyte ga z170 ultra gaming
I have no interest in a sli setup and that really is my knowledge on motherboards pro's/ cons. Is the one I have ok or is it worth switching for the others listed?
I will be gaming on multiple monitors I have a projector which is limited to 1080pee 60hz. A 4k tv which i believe can do 120hz at 1080 but is limited to 60hz at 4k. Also I am very interested in a 21:9 monitor but that will not be getting bought till later in the year. The 21:9 monitor will be a 1440p screen.
Cheers

I did not go 480

The Zotac super compact was actually available for the 1060 this morning and my build overall became a $600 build which seems to be the sweetspot for budget PC's.

I did up the Power Supply from 500 to 550 since the one you linked jumped in price. The 550 was still modular, corsair and exactly the same as the original price you gave me.

So the build ended up like this

Rosewill Dual Fan Micro ATX Mini Tower - $27.99
i3-6100 - $118
Gigabyte LGA1151 - $50
Corsair 550W - $60
Hyper X Fury 8GB DDR4 - $40
PNY 240GB SSD CS1311 - $64
Zotac GTX 1060 Super Compact $250

$610 before taxes

about $650 due to tax and shipping

It WOULD have been under $600 if it wasn't for AMD not knowing how to stock their fucking cards and all AIBs earlier. They fucked up, their miss

overall very happy

What you're going to find is you'll get ~60% of the performance of the PC's in here that are $1800+ for 1/3 of the price. I think you're going to be very happy considering what you are using it for. It's also more than capable of playing most new games at highest settings with good settings.

Can't wait to see how you like it. It always goes a long way to have feedback in these threads with great budget builds to promote that PC gaming doesn't have to be ungodly expensive.

Silly question....how do I find out what type and speed of RAM I have? I currently have 8 GB (2 x 4GB) and want to add another 2 x 4GB.

It is Corsair DDR 4 and I am near sure it is 3200 but want to check this speed for sure without having to open the PC. Thanks

Co worker sold me a Cooler Master Nepton 140XL for $40. Seems like a good deal. So I bought it and have it sitting on my desk in a Kraken X61 box. Now I want a Kraken. Help me I'm lost in PC gaming now.

Have a bit of a question about the REVERSE of this thread (namely, I'm selling, not buying), but it seems like the most apt place to put it.

I built a PC in ~2011, and last year, converted it to a Hackintosh after becoming acclimated to OS X through school. After a while, I got tired of dealing with drivers / support / etc, and gave in to buy a legitimate iMac.

So now, I'm looking to sell the tower I built. I'm not sure how easy it is to sell a custom-built computer though — am I better off just selling the components individually? Or are there buyers out there who would be interested in the full tower? I'm in Canada, so the only option I can think for selling it would be Kijiji, unless someone knows of a better way.

I'm also not sure what I should be charging, whether individually or together.

Asus Z77 Extreme4 Motherboard
i7 Ivy Bridge 3770K (3.5GHz)
Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7950 (3GB VRAM)
8 GB G Skill 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM (2 x 4GB)
Crucial M4 64GB SSD (CT064M4SSD2)
1TB HDD
ATX Case (~$80 when purchased)
Corsair 850W PSU (HX850)

Any advice?

CPU-Z should be able to tell you.

DDR stands for Double Data Rate.

Dance Dance Revolution has been lying to be all this time!

Thanks I thought that too. Just opened my PC to check and it is DDR4 3000 .... but in CPU Z it is showing as 1500?

Is this normal?
I was pretty sure that CPU Z actually did the x2 multiplication for you (i.e. showed the clock you were expecting) but I just checked my version and it definitely doesn't. So, yeah, kennah is correct -- you've got to multiply the clock by 2.

Had my ASUS 1070 come in yesterday and I got to benchmark my machine to 6k on time spy. I went in to dust and tidy up some cables then as I started up the machine the hyper evo cooler randomly fell out side in the machine and snapped some mobo off with it!!

Rip Sandy Brige set up 2016.

My work depends on having a good machine ready but I can't trust any of my components besides the new GTX 1070 since my hard drives seem to be screwed too.
I've got about 700-800 bucks to build a good machine with while I salvage my case and new graphics card.
I was going to blow that on a monitor but that will have to wait.

New Build for 2016:

CPU : i5 6600K @ 4.5Ghz
Mobo: MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon
Memory: 16gb Corsair Vengeance 2666mhz Led Red
GPU: Palit Super JetStream 1070 GTX @ 2080/4500
Cooler: Corsair H100i
Case: NZXT 440 Black/Red
PSU: Corsair RM850 modular
HDD: SSD Boot/SSD Gaming/Seagate Hybrid
Keyboard: Corsair K65 RGB
Mouse: Corsair Sabre RGB

Hi, so after I built my own PC, a friend of mine became interested and asked me to build him a new one on a budget of around 600 or less Euros. He mostly uses it for work, but would love to play at least Witcher 3 so I wanted to get him a halfway decent Graphics card in form of a RX470 since for his purposes it should be quite future proof and cheap

So far i assembled a list and come out at around 560€ I'd need some recommendations for the Motherboard, basically as cheap as possible, doesn't really need that much features, but I want to have one that is well made.

Case: Sharkoon T3-S -30€
Power: Corsair CP-9020097 -41€
CPU: i3 6100 3,7 GHZ LGA1151 -115€
RAM:Kingston HyperX Savage 2x4GB -40€
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B150M-DS3H DDR3 -67€
Graphics: RX470 4GB^ -170€
SSD: Intenso 120GB -37€
HDD: Seagate 1TB -50€
I didn't do a full price comparison yet, but these are about what I could get right now (minus the unknown price of the RX 470)

Also a Micro ATX should work fine in a normal case no? ALso would a micro tower work with this setup?

Dumb question, I'm completely new to PC gaming and am looking at using the "excellent" build from the OP as template.
I looked up the ga-z170xp-sli and they list the Dvi-d and d-sub ports as supporting max resolution of 1920x1200 60hz what does that impact? I can't imagine that means it has a max frame rate of 60 when connected via those ports, does it?

Also does that mobo have on board wifi? If not what is a good alternative that does?

So I'm strapped for cash, and I want to sell my r9 390 to a buddy it's a 3d club royal queen. Purchased and used lightly 7 months ago. How much is a reasonable price to sell it to him for?

Jumped on the $360 1070. It's been years but I'll be firing up my itx system again. It looks like my 3770k @ 5GHz hasn't really been wildly surpassed. I might consider making a jump to 32GB of RAM but I am not sure yet.

Any opinions on the EVGA cards and how they compare to Gigabyte and MSi? Leaving work now and not sure if I should get the Gigabyte G1 or the EVGA SC.

IMPORTANT QUESTION:

I bought parts to replace my 10 year old Dell Vostro 400. I've got an SSD with my windows 7 install. I just slam that bitch into my new motherboard and everything will be rosy, right?

I think it should be able to do 1080p/60 on a 950 on high, but you may have to turn down certain settings to medium.

What card? Either one is going to be good, but the G1 models tends to be more higher end compared to the EVGA SC, which is on the lower end of EVGA cards. The cooling and overclocking tends to be better on the G1 overall. Get whichever is cheaper I guess.

I'd like to know as well. All I really know is that I've read a lot of posts here and on reddit where people are saying EVGA has superior customer service support, which helps out a lot if you have to RMA your card. The EVGA GTX 1060 SC is factory overclocked and $259 on Amazon (out of stock at the moment but you can still place a reserve order), so that looks like a good option.

Are you not buying a video card? Typically we would advise against plugging monitors into the motherboard IO unless either your video card is busted in some way or are on a very low budget. If you are doing serious gaming, you get a video card and plug the monitor into that card, not the board.

But yeah, it means exactly that, the motherboard supports 1920x1200@60hz through DVI.

Also, we don't recommend buying mobo's with built-in Wi-Fi as they are more expensive than normal. Exception is a mITX motherboard. It's better to buy a separate PCI-e based Wi-Fi card as they are cheaper.

Sorry the 1070 G1 which is what I got and so far so good. Will stress test it later when I have time. Thanks for the response, I went with the Gigabyte card because it looked like it had better cooling.

I tried google for this problem but can't solve it. I have an Asus z87-plus motherboard. I am also on Windows 10. When I shut down the pc, a couple seconds later the PC will turn back on. I isolated the problem to the ethernet connection. When I pull out the lan cable or disable it in bios and then shut down the PC, it stays off. I looked in the BIOS at all the settings that have to do with "Wake on..." and they are disabled. I also looked at the setting for the network adapter in Windows and they are disabled. Anyone run into this problem?

Thanks.

Hi Gaf! I need some help. My MSI 1070 Gaming has just arrive, it requires a 8 pin and a 6 pin power supply. My PSU come with a PCIe cable such that it has two 6+2 pin connector in one end that I can use. Can I just use them both in this graphic card or I need two such cables to connect to my graphic card? I hope I express my problem well, thanks!

You will almost certainly have to call and reactivate Windows. Beyond that it should work, but that first boot might take a little while since Windows will need to setup new drivers for everything.

6+2 will work fine, that's what it's intended for. To be either a 6 pin or an 8 pin.

Ok now I get what that means. I don't know why I thought that meant it would impact what GPU would output.

I've got a bit of spare cash and wondering if I should upgrade something.

I have a i7-2700k that isn't overclocked.

A 1TB drive and a 256GB SSD that basically holds one game. I'm usually running out of space on the HDD and it's getting older, it was from 2010 or so.

Graphics card is fine. Only 8gb of Ram though.

I don't see any point in upgrading the CPU. I don't think it's holding anything back with a 970 at 1080p.

Does RAM even matter much? I'd like to have a 2TB drive in there and the 1TB is likely to fail within the next 5 years too.

That board cannot overclock the CPU, either go with your previous board or go for the i3.

I saw on ewholesaler.com they were selling as "Acceptable" a 3TB WD Blue hd for $30 shipped. I thought I'd give it a shot. My biggest concern was that Blue drives are meant for 24/7 use and it would have come out of some surveillance setup with a gillion hours of use.

What I got was a 2015 drive with ~150hrs of use, no errors. Practically brand new.

Stuck it in an enclosure and I am now using it as part of my NAS.

Might be a good place to check for parts if you're low on cash.

Are you serious everything is bought and shipped I have 6600k i5 and 16gb ram at 3000 mhz , is it overkill for that board?

Not overkill, but you could have saved money buying the non-K 6600.
And that CPU-cooler will be kind of overkill since you won't be overclocking.

My advice: Return the board and get a Z170 one, then all will match.
