Well have a lot more info about the 1060 tomorrow so it wouldn't be a bad idea to wait and see what the performance look like there.
I really am a complete newbie when it comes to PC parts and building computers - which brings me swiftly on to my next question. If I buy the set up you posted, could I get that pre-built, or would I have to assemble it myself?

You could do both!!!! Are you buying from ncix?

Vied for a tag related to cocks, so here it is.
Don't know about the Enermax, but depending on where you are located or which look you prefer, I'd go with an EK Predator or a Swiftech kit. Both are expandable and refillable.

As for a nice looking case with a large window, the Phanteks Evolv ATX comes to mind.

Might as well ask: Does anyone have experience with sticking LEDs on your monitor?
I got a lightpack kit the other day and it works pretty well and looks cool, but the Acer XB270HU has a rugged backside (which I didn't consider) and the LED strips are already falling off since the adhesive has barely any surface to stick to. I have a few Tesa "PowerStrips" (https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B000KJOC78/) on the way, couldn't really think of anything else that is not permanent but might be suitable for the surface.

I had an IKEA LED strip on the back of my monitor, literally just held in place with regular tape but the rear of my main monitor is a glossy/smooth surface, very easy to stick stuff to.

Both put you under budget and smokey fast. Upgrade to HMB2 GPU next year and you're set for another 3-5 years.

My bad, it wasn't you. Still, this is the setup in question...

In this case you would be building it yourself. There may be a site in the U.K that does a similar service to NCIX in the U.S/Canada though where you order the parts from a specific site and they build it for a relatively small fee. However, the parts are usually more expensive with such a service as well as you aren't able to shop around for the best deals on each part/limited selection.

Anyone know if there's a service like that in the U.K?

Finally about to pull the trigger on a new pc, just can't decide on freesync or gsync. I really hate this propriety bullshit built into monitors, especially forcing you to choose between the two vendors.

a good monitor will last you a long time, but now it locks you into a brand of video card.

I'm thinking a gsync monitor for now with a rx480 then when nvidia release a real a sync compute card possible next year, then sell the rx480 and go to nvidia.

I just went for freesync thinking they will eventually open up and that they were cashing In while they were the only one on the market. I think I should've went with your strategy because apparently gsync is better at lower framerates or has lower input lag or something at lower framerates, someone else can confirm that, I'm not the greatest when it comes to display technology.

Thinking about getting a new video card, I've had an HD 6800 for years now and it's beginning to show its age. But my budget is nowhere near a 1080 or 1070, so something along the lines of GTX 970 is what I can afford. Is it worth buying now or should I wait a while for prices to go down? Or perhaps get a different video card (in the same price range)?

That's a good deal for a Schiit stack, considering the Magni2 itself is normally $99 (US). The Sennheiser 555 wouldn't really benefit, though, since it's a low impedance headphone. The Modi DAC would be better than onboard for sure.

Hmm, i believe mines are very old models, the 120 ohms ones, not the newer models which are 50 ohms. Its a miracle that they are still holding up after all those years, the plastic is starting to crack, but still not fully blown out like some i've seen on the web.

It might be stupid advice, I'm half asleep, but when I'm trying to stick something to uneven surfaces I go to the nearest arts and crafts store and buy the strongest wall gum I can find or strongest double sided bonding material.

I used a pack of Sugru on my setup, works great and is easy easy to scrape off when you wanna take it off, dries in under 24 hours and very strong, plus I put it on top of the adhesive and then wrapped it around a small part of the LED strip so that the maximum amount of light is visible

Thanks for the assistance guys. I've managed to get my 2500k to 4.5 and it seems stable so far, no BSODS.

Only weird thing is when I boot my PC it sounds like it fails to post once or twice, retries automatically, and then is successful. There's no message about overclocking failure like I used to get and it keeps all the OC settings I had set. Weird.

A quick question if anyone can help im currently downloading drivers to usb for my new pc build, I have the Radeon crimson software for my rx480 and all the drivers for my gigabyte motherboard, will any other drivers be necessary? im also using an i5 6600k thanks

Hi, hopefully a quick question currently have a 560ti graphics card and looking to upgrade. I only really want to play at 1080p on high type settings.

What sort of graphics card should I look for?

a 750ti or GTX 950 or are their better alternatives?

If your budget is around the $200-300 range the rx480 is great at $240. The 1060 just came out as well, but it's a $60 premium for about the same performance.

Make sure you get the new AMD drivers for the 480.

thanks got it,sorry for being a nuisance but will i need to download driver for my i5 6600k

No problem. I would go to Settings -> Update & Recovery -> Windows Update and make sure it says "Windows is up to date" and you should be good there. Might take a couple re-starts for it to get all of them. I don't remember installing any specific hardware drivers except for my mobo, GPU and monitor.

How does this new build look? I upgraded the Motherboard so it has wifi and that way I can avoid the adapter.

I'll wait a little bit to get feedback before I purchase it this time. =P

This motherboard only has one PCIe slot, bro.

In addition to what others have said. (mITX in a Full tower case, Mobo only has 1 PCIE slot, so you can't use that sound card and GFX card at the same time)

The motherboard only has 4 SATA slots, so you wouldn't be able to connect the 5 drives you have listed.

Get a full size motherboard, and pick up that wifi adapter.

Thermal paste will come on the CPU Cooler. PSU is fine.

I asked this in the 1060 thread, but I'd also like to ask here because this is where I made my PC originally in 2013.

I need a new graphics card, and I'm still undecided between the RX 480 and the GTX 1060; I'm looking to keep either one for as long as possible.

At present, the 1060 outperforms the 480 in contemporary games. But it's the longevity that makes me hesitant to jump the gun and get the 1060. Generally, Nvidia cards get worse over time, whereas AMD cards only get better. The current performance of AMD and Nvidia cards from a few years ago worries me; even if the Nvidia cards outperformed the AMD cards at launch, the AMD cards outperform the Nvidia cards in games made in 2016.

Are my worries unfounded? Should I just get the 1060 if I'm looking to keep it long-term? This is strictly at 1080p (I have a 3770k).

Get whichever you can get the best deal on. Remember that the third-party 480s still haven't been released. I hope these 1060 numbers lights a fire under them and they release the fucking things.

Then go for the compromise and get the 6500 and a Z170 board. She doesn't need 3000mhz RAM, or 16 gb, So go for 8gb @ 2400, unless you REALLY want 3000. And I threw in the 850 Pro SSD.

Thanks a ton, this was really helpful.

made a few changes (120gb ssd instead, and different ram due to availability and ordering from 3 different places) but you got me in a good spot.

I talked it over with her and we're going to wait for the 470 instead of getting the 480 since I'll be upgrading in a year or so, so this is well under budget and better parts than my original build.

Appreciate it!

Reason for scaling back the SSD to 120?

Reason for scaling back the SSD to 120?

She has a macbook for all of her "important" stuff, this PC is mostly for games. 120 should cover the important ones, and then the 1tb for everything else she's ok with.

She doesn't like to install a lot of things over separate drives.

I'm going for a $500 decent budget build here

Just have a few questions is the 4GB of the RX 480 ok to use? I run 1080p only do not care about higher resolutions. Will it be bottlenecked by the i3-6100?

If so I'm looking at roughly a system of

i3-6100
RX 480 4GB whenever the hell it comes in stock
16GB of DDR3....if possible DDR4 based on price
500W power supply
Mobo
500GB or even 250GB HDD
Case

The PC will mostly be used for minor editing and world of warcraft.....thats pretty much it.

Looks like I have to swap out my case since it doesn't seem to be getting proper airflow with my GPU hitting 83+c.

Going to wait until I have this problem sorted out before overclocking the CPU.

Time for first full PC re-do since 2009!

A mate from a retailer is hooking me up, and so hopefully by the end of the week my i7-920 and 760 will be replaced with a 6700k and 1070 Strix!

Been holding off on firing up Doom for this, can't wait!

This should do you nicely. You wont need 16gb RAM, so here's 8gb of DDR4 @ 2133mhz. And you might need to revise your budget up to $550 because going any lower than that you're not going to get quality. It includes two USB 3.0 in the back and one on the front of the case and a good SSD as well. I got it to around $540 for you.

I'd avoid the V300 SSDs
Also should bump the RAM up to 2400 minimum imo

GTX 1060 added to build sheet, hopefully people can actually buy them at $250

Go for this then:
Storage: Sandisk SSD PLUS 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($62.99 @ NCIX US)

Mobo wont support 2400mhz, there's no way a 1060 is going to go for $250, not for months. Stick with the 480, its fine for his needs.

Edit:

Go for this then:
Storage: Sandisk SSD PLUS 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($62.99 @ NCIX US)

Mobo wont support 2400mhz, there's no way a 1060 is going to go for $250, not for months. Stick with the 480, its fine for his needs.

This is a fairly solid recommendation. My only worry is video editing takes up alot of Hard drive space and WoW while slightly affected load times would see any crazy differences because alot of it is based on instancing/load times from the server side. I think it might be a better idea to use that money to get a 2GB HDD like this. It's about a $3 difference from the SSD you linked.

minor editing....I have externals....so I'm good there ;) thank you guys!

I'm after a new 2TB HDD and a 1TB backup external drive, is there anything good for around £50 for the HDD and £40 for the External? I'd prefer something slightly cheaper than the 2TB WD Blue WD20EZRZ mentioned in the OP if possible. Looking at amazon UK the best seller seems to be the Toshiba HDTB310EK3AA 1 TB Canvio Basics but i have no idea if that's the best choice for an external at that sort of price.

I'm thinking of upgrading from my i7-3820k build and was looking at the i5-6600k. I see that's been out for a year, any rumours on when new processors will be out? I'm not sure if it's worth waiting or not.

Kabylake is supposed* to launch late December, probably January. It'll have support for Optane, which should be a game changer for data storage.

*WCCFTECH Article so take it with salt.

Depends who you ask, Kaby lake (14nm refresh) expected late 2016, early 2017 and cannonlake (new 10nm process) mid-late 2017. Personally Cannonlake is the go to upgrade for that reason given intel is now doing a tick tick tock cycle so you can expect to be on 10nm for at least 3 years.

Thanks!

5-10% increase, Moore's law really went out the window. The 6600k is only a 50% increase on my processor and it's 4 years older. I guess i'll probably wait at this point then anyway. It'll make it seem more worthwhile, seeing as it's going to cost like £500+ for the processor, Motherboard and RAM.

Interesting also, thanks.

Shared this in the 1060 thread but an MSI 980TI can be had for $365 using EMCELFJ22 on Newegg.

Hey guys, my monitor supports 60hz and 75hz, can someone please tell me how to disable 75hz so games don't run at 75fps? Thanks.
I do have an NVIDIA card if that helps.

Right click on desktop -> Display Settings -> Advanced Display Settings -> Display adapter properties -> Monitor tab

If you have not changed the refresh rate previously, it should only be running at 60hz. You might also wanna look at your Nvidia control panel settings under custom resolutions. Its best to leave it as is if you have changed it and use something like RTSS to limit your fps imo.

Didn't get the memo regarding the 14th Amendment

Thanks!! The one thing I want to do is VR eventually, so is a 1070 more than enough for that?

You don't need thermal paste with these parts unless you're going to re-apply the cooler, it comes with pre-installed paste.

Ok, great. No thermal paste it is.

Either base your blu ray drive purchase over the read/write speeds or look on silentpc for the quietest option.

Will do. I'll be looking for good drives to add.

The power supply is a quality unit, you shouldn't have any problems there.

That's good, at least that power unit will be staying in this build.

General comments - I'd definitely suggest a custom cooler 1080, 3x 1Tb SSDs seems ever so slightly overkill(!) and having an mITX motherboard in a large case like the 760T will look something

Do you have any recommendations on a good case? It has to be on NCIXUS.com since they'll be building it.

This motherboard only has one PCIe slot, bro.

Thanks! Good thing I asked because that would have been bad. I'll be looking for another Mobo or making adjustments to my current build now.

In addition to what others have said. (mITX in a Full tower case, Mobo only has 1 PCIE slot, so you can't use that sound card and GFX card at the same time)

I'll either get rid of the sound card or change the Mobo.

The motherboard only has 4 SATA slots, so you wouldn't be able to connect the 5 drives you have listed.

Get a full size motherboard, and pick up that wifi adapter.

Any recommendations on a good motherboard that's versatile? It can be expensive if it has to be. No wifi is fine as I can just add a wifi adapter. All of this has to be purchased at NCIXUS.com tho.

Thermal paste will come on the CPU Cooler. PSU is fine.

Thanks, good to know and have pretty unanimous agreement behind the cooler and PSU at least.

Is it this one?

And reliability is the most important thing to me -- is that Mobo and manufacturer good quality/reliable?

I can't find that on NCIXUS.com so I might just not get an adapter -- I can always get a USB wireless/bluetooth adapter.

So new build -- will this Mobo fit with the amount of HDD/SSDs I have and the sound card, optical drive, and GPU? Basically, is this build compatible?

Thanks man, I have 60hz selected but some games automatically choose to run at 75fps. i wanted to disable 75hz altogether.

Yes 1070 is well above recommended specs for VR. Also again for gaming you will really really not see any benefit from 32GB of ram vs 16. You likely won't even use 16 ever while the system is still viable.

Ok, so only one stick of RAM. I'll get rid of the second stick. I also realized that I have to wait until NCIXUS has the CPU back in stock. :/
