So I took the dive and replaced my monitor. I went in with the idea that I was going to get A BenQ (probably the RL, I didn't feel I needed 144Hz) or an AOC. But, there was a Samsung 27" VA panel (C27F396FHN) on for for a good price that put it just over my $300 CAD budget, and it had Freesync to boot. It was the last day of the sale so I didn't want to miss out and picked it up. I was very happy with my previous Samsung monitor so I hoped this would be good.

But I had some questions that I'm hoping you guys can help answer:

1) I had read that VA panels were "not really recommended for games". The reason was the response times, of which this panel says 4ms. That is slower than TN, but put's it in the range of IPS (and it is better than my previous 9 year old monitor at 5/6ms). So if VA has the same response as IPS (which a number of you use for games), is the response time really an issue to worry about? (Note: I virtually never play FPS type games. Almost exclusively RPG or third person games like Dark Souls or WoW).

2) The other reason I bought the monitor was it had Freesync. I *really* wanted GSync and a 1060, but it was just too out of budget. So, I opted for Freesync and next month I will pick up a Nitro. But I had understood Freesync was a Displayport technology, but this monitor doesn't have a display port, it uses HDMI, so I'm confused as to how it works (other than me being totally wrong about displayport). The other thing is that the lower end range of Freesync/GSync is supposed to be important, and this monitor does 48hz - 75hz (I've seen places recommend 30hz bottom end but those monitors seem rare). So anything below 48Hz, I won't get the benefit. I'm hoping the 480 can push 60fps at 1080p for a lot of titles, or at least above 48 fps. Could this cause me troubles down the road?

I figure I'm going to run this thing over the weekend, as I have 14 days to return it. If I can't get along with it, I'll switch out for a 24" BenQ RL for the 1ms response time and much cheaper price tag.

Any recommendations for a usb 3.0 hdd? I just plan to use it to back up my data. Anything with at least 1TB should be plenty.

So I went a little hog wild. Newegg glitched and split my order but I'll call them in the morning. What's a good thermal paste? I still need to buy ram and some fans and random stuff but this is my new toy. Cooling is via a corsair 115i aio watercooling setup

Building a new rig for a buddy. He has a budget of 700 Canadian dollars. I'm recycling an old AMD 290X and 500W power supply for him, these are what I'm looking at.

CASE: Thermalake G41 Mid-Tower Case (89.99)
MOBO: Gigabyte H170-M DS3H (119.99)
CPU: Intel i5 6600k (319.99)
HDD: Seagate 1TB SATA III w/ 64MB cache (64.99)
RAM: Kingston 2x8GB DDR4 2133MHz (92.99)

Should I be avoiding any of this? Bad deals? Remember, the pricing is in CAD.

Look around on the three edmonton stores. Nothing wrong with their clearance section and you can often find really great stuff for really really cheap.

Yeah, I'm headed to Mem Express tomorrow after work with my roommate. That's where I got all the prices.

Just wanted to see if anyone had any input on the selections. I don't want to fuck him over with a bad deal or component.

The only 'issue' is that you have an H series board with a K series processor. It's a waste because the motherboard can't overclock. You need a Z board to overclock. The Edmonton South branch has an asus Z170 for $91

http://www.memoryexpress.com/Clearance/Item/74014b3c-df37-455b-b1de-36b22353d57f

If you don't want to overclock, then just get an i5 6500 or something like that for cheaper.

And if you get that board, get this SSD. There is one in the Edmonton South store as well.

BeQuiet Pure Rock. $35 at Newegg. $10 more than the 212, but the mounting system is good, it cools better, and its fan is leagues ahead of the disposable 3-pin that comes with the 212.

I'll list more when I'm not on mobile.
$10 may not seem like much but it is like a 40% price increase.

I somewhat agree though. This reminds me of the early days of the Antec 900 case. Where everyone and their dog had one and everyone recommended it because it's what they had. Even years later when it was surpassed by almost every case manufacturer.

Go for the 6500 and 8 gb of ram, or 6600k and a z170 board.

Here's the BASE build, you dont NEED a cooler for the 6500 but I've heard the one that comes with sucks.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($249.98 @ DirectCanada)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper T2 54.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($14.99 @ NCIX)

Total: $444.95
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I'm considering building a new PC if it turns out my motherboard is damaged and it's not just my GPU, here's what I came up with.

Is there anything I should be considering instead (I will be configuring the 3 hard drives for RAID 5, they'll be used mainly for video storage since I tend to capture a lot of it and, of course, video games)? I went for a $1,000 budget PC last time (AMD CPU, lower end DDR3 memory) and don't want to make that mistake again since I plan on using this for the next few years and plan on using it for playing 1080/4K gaming, recording audio and editing 1080p video.

Really appreciate it!

Any store would be fine as long as the total price includes shipping.

You're right, I might have underestimated my budget.

Ok, here's my updated list. According to a quick check, Hitman would usually default to low settings on 2GB cards, but it can be disabled in the game's launcher to allow the use of medium and high textures on 2GB of VRAM. It's called "Override Memory Safeguards" in the options.

According to this benchmark, the game on a 2GB R9 380 will still hand in respectable performance. But I can go lower to bring the price down if you want.

If you don't mind taking advantage of mail in rebates, there's also that.

Hey all. Been lurking in this thread tonight and using Haz's builds as a base. I'm looking to build my first completely new computer in quite a long time. The last one I build was when Quad Core Q6600s were new. My old girl is finally dying out and it's time to get something new. I feel a lot has changed since i last built a computer and by that I mean changed for the better. It was fairly easy to find a lot of good component options with good reviews and feedback to quickly narrow down what I am looking for.

Let me note that my PC is not really for gaming. I'd say it's more of a multimedia computer with 3D Animation and video editing thrown in. That being said, I do game occasionally. Much like my current computer, which I consider high-mid range and it lasted me a good long time. I am hoping to repeat that here.

As for my components I listed above, these are all I need. The missing pieces I will be taking from my old computer: The case, my SSD, HHD, and optical drives.

I'm know for sure I want to splurge and get a 1070.
I want a Core i7 for sure but am going back and fourth on a 6700K @ 3.40 Ghz or a 6700K @ 4.00 Ghz. Thoughts?
I've had trouble choosing my motherboard and have sort of settled on the one I listed. I had found it earlier today when I started researching and keep seeing it pop up in builds. Is it a good one? A lot of sites that sell it only have 4 star customer ratings for it which concern me. It does seem like a solid board and has exactly what I need. Maybe even too much because I doubt I will ever use SLI.
The power supply I am not picky about. I just want something solid. If someone could recommend a cheaper one, that would be great.

I have 2 monitors that are DVI. Will I be able to use them with a DVI to HDMI adapter?

That's all the questions I have. Any feedback would be great. Hoping to purchase this very soon.

Curious are you looking to overclock that 6700k, you are after all buying the unlocked version.

(also the power supply is something you NEVER skimp on, wattage you dont need to go high on, but always look for quality)

Maybe, maybe not. I haven't Overclocked in years. This computer will be such a beast to the one I am replacing that I am not really thinking about OC'ing.

Unless there is a non-unlocked version that is a lot cheaper, I'd be fine with that one I listed. My budget was suppose to be $1000 and I have creeped a bit past that. But I don't really see where I can cut corners without compromising what I want.

Please note that the stores I choose aren't necessarily where I am actually going to buy these items form.

I'm working on optimizing my system's cooling - can anyone suggest improvements for my fan placement? I'm switching to a non blower-style GPU and I know it could use some work. When I first built, this is what I did and am still using:

I'm thinking I can just get away with adding an intake fan in the front, but I honestly don't know. My case is an NZXT Source 210 Elite (a mid tower).

I would say two front intake and make your top fan exhaust. Just adding one fan I'd say move the top fan to the front and have two front intake and just the rear exhaust. Positive pressure will still push the warm air out the vented top.

Well if all that is the case you could go with a 6700, then get a h170 board

I mean, it could save you 50-75 dollars maybe a bit more depending on the motherboard choice.

I was just asking if you were going to overclock because id go with a better motherboard and a better cpu cooler.

if your money strapped, the 6600/6600k is good for gaming too.

I missed your part about the PSU, sorry. I didn't mean to imply I wanted to skimp. I'd definitely like some recommendations for something reliable and long lasting.

From what I understand it doesn't seem a good idea to have intake and exhaust fans so close to each other.

doyll from Overclock.net has a lot of useful information here.

I'm not too familiar with that case, but I'd probably do 3 intake (front, bottom, and side), and keep the exhaust in the rear. Raising the case slightly would benefit the bottom intake too.

Does the K in 6700K mean unlocked?

What's the difference between H170 board and a Z170 board?

The 2 processors I am choosing between would be a 6700K at 4.0g Ghz or a 6700 at 3.4. based on my finance options, those are my choices. So if I understand correctly, the 6700 3.4 would not be overclockable? The price difference is very minimal, so I feel I should get the 6700k.

Thanks for the help! Is there any issue connecting case fans to my mobo's CPU cooler slots? I'll end up with one more case fan than I have case fan ports.

Yes K means unlocked and overclockable.

6700 cannot overclock, 6700k can, and most likely can be pushed to 4.5GHz or more if you get a golden chip.

Z170 are boards that can overclock, H170 are boards that can overclock.

Purchase based on what you want now, but also think about what you may do in the future.

So if you want to overclock or overclock in your future and ARE NOT concerned you went over you 1000 dollar budget go with the 6700K maybe get a little better motherboard, and a better cooler if you want to overclock, or stick with that cooler and upgrade in the future when you want to.

Actually personally they both have the same power delivery go with the GA-Z170XP-SLI so you dont have to deal with the killer NIC.

Either one will work, just pick the one you like best.

I ended up going for the ASUS, just because it seems to be the more expensive board and getting it for $4 less than the ASRock seemed like a great deal. It also seems to have some extra features like M.2 support, even though I don't really need them. I like ASRock and that board seemed to be very close in quality, though. Thanks again for the help.

I believe it just tranfers the license now, provided you're logging in using your Microsoft account.

I'll give that a shot, but otherwise I'm going to build my new PC and reinstall Windows 8 from my disc, then do the whole update process over again on it. I've read that it works and is a solid way to be sure your new PC will activate. I just have to hope the parts arrive in time to do it.

Once again, thank you for your help. I revised my part list based on your input as well as what I just really want. I think this may be final or near final. About to go to sleep so I'll probably mull over it tomorrow. I actually put the Z170XP-SLI back on the list before I saw your reply.

By the way someone may of answered this and I missed it, but will my DVI monitors work with this video card? I imagine I will need an adapter, which is fine but I wanted to check.

Also, the Cooler Master fan seems super highly rated, but HUGE. Will it fit in a standard tower? I couldn't call my current tower small, it's a Cooler Master Centurion and my current setup has a fairly large ZALMAN. But this CM seems even bigger.

Anyway thank you.

According to PCPartPicker its 159mm in height. Edit: yes i think it will. Not 100 percent sure, it will be very tight, i think that 165mm measurement is measuring from the motherboard tray.

Yes that card can support DVI monitors with a 1 adapter.

You get 1 DVI-D port that should be fine with pretty much any monitor.
You need an adapter for the other monitor. Not sure what monitor you have, but I'd go for a Active DP to DVI-D adapter just to be safe.

I recently built a Windows based file server. (like 2 weeks ago).

I installed Windows 7 ultimate edition. Everything ran fine.

I just did the free upgrade to Windows 10. Everything seems to be running fine now too.

Do I need to find the Windows 10 specific drivers for my MOBO (Asus Maximus Gene VI) and install them? For example chipset driver, audio driver etc all have Windows 10 versions. Do I need to install them?

Windows 10 is pretty good at grabbing the drivers for the used hardware itself but more often than not, the driver version it downloads is outdated by a few weeks. If everything works as intended, I'd just leave it at that.

The $60 120mm liquid cooling solution is the best way to go IMO.
I agree with you about the EVO I just bought it because I was in a rush and not aware of other things on the market. I almost picked up a $50 Phantek. Every time i mount the EVO I feel like im harming my mobo. I may very well replace it with one of your suggestions.... to bad returning it wont be worth the shipping/restocking costs.
So many people keep overspending on the 6700k. Stop buying into the hype, HT may be of use in like 2 games.
Is the 6700k worth it for a game developer? I chose it because it seemed to perform well even though its dollar ratio isnt as great as the i5 6600k.

If an RX 480 is the same price as an R9 390X, which would be the better buy, do you think?

I think a 390X still outpaces the 480 by a little bit, right? Of course, the power draw would be way higher on the 390X.

is there any risk for always running everything as adminsitrator in Windows 10.

I had this set up in Windows 7 never had any issues and just wanted to double check.
